Trying to imagine hackers of cognition
and the infinite
Trying to imagine hackers of cognition
and the infinite
12/05/2003 01:49 PM
I've just read Mark Pilgrim's post, "The
infinite hotel", which I'm sure I'll need to re-read a few times
and chase down references to read. Also I'm reading Gödel, Escher, Bach again for the
third time, since I first read it in high school and needed corks in
my ears to prevent brain slurry from spilling out. I really need to
read more of this sort of thing, refresh myself on all the math I took
in college, and explore some of this really abstract stuff.
Something I've been musing about lately, without any real novel ideas
or insights, is about the history of computation and these thinking
machines. Not history in terms of events and when, but in terms of
the concepts and discoveries leading up to keyboards, screens, and
code today. Thinking about things like recursion, and sets, and
logic, and all the patterns and revolutions in thought that are the
basis for everyday business and life today.
I've been trying to imagine the world in each moment where each of
these things were new, when these things were worked out in minds and
on paper. When there were no computational engines available to carry
out calculations or work out conclusions to logical constructions.
Today, these discoveries are crystallized in computing architectures,
and so geeks hack and play and learn by example. The construction of
the CPU is objective fact, independent of subjective thought or
understanding, and the behavior of code demonstrates the laws and
rules. Before, the rules were carefully reasoned out and intuited
from observations on the objective universe, but now they're
assimilated by example from mechanically working artifacts.
I'm not sure I'm expressing this very well, or if my thoughts are very
well formed altogether, but I'm trying to imagine mental life without
readily available, objectively existing computational artifacts with
which we can play, without prohibitive investments of effort or time.
No scripting languages with which to just try out logical
constructions. No calculators with which to solve formulae. All
manual, all by hand, all worked out by careful thought and precision.
I'm trying to imagine what geeks like me, as I am today, would be like
at a time when everyone dealing in these things was an abstraction
astronaut, and there was not really a such thing as
that-which-just-works or worse-is-better. Does this make any sense?
Again, this is not really an expression of anything coherent or novel.
This is mostly me just in awe of how we got here, and trying to get
myself above the mode of being just a hacker chasing down the
phylogeny of all that's come before, and into some meta-mode of
understanding of the things behind what makes these thinking machines
and the thinking itself work. Maybe after a few more decades of this
I'll have some thoughts worth sharing synthesized from all that I've
learned.

Sony Cybershot DSC-T33
Sony Cybershot DSC-T33
12/28/2004 11:13 AM
Sony has released a new sleeker version of the CyberShot
DSC-T3, called the DSC-T33, in countries that aren't Japan or
the United States. Much like the DSC-T11 was the slimmer counterpart
to the DSC-T1, the new camera isn't fundamentally different internally
than its predecessor—the difference is just the casing. I have
no idea why the camera might be available in Korea, for instance, but
not other countries, but I'm sure that demand for a svelte, blue
camera will encourage someone to start importing it into the US.
Whether a Japanese importer will ship a Japanese product from Korea
to sell again in Japan is something I can't speculate on.

Oh
Sony, when you aren't acting like a blind, lumbering bastard of a
company sometimes I almost want to give you a big bear hug. Like when
you make something like this new Cybershot DSC-M1 - there's no reason
for it, you just decided to get funky, and let the engineers
take a long, deep pull off the pipe before starting to design it. It's
not the specs that really get me, I guess - it's just a 5.1-megapixel
camera that scrounges parts from the DSC-T1 - it's just all the weird
features, like the four shutter buttons and dual-microphone stereo
sound recording. And the new MPEG4 video implementation (although in
truth, I really don't care much about solid-state camcorders, at least
not using expensive Memory Sticks).

cameraphone-looking things and has lots of hands-on impressions and

08/03/2004 09:03 AMYou know, I don't know why it's legal for id to

Anyway, I was looking at the Sony Cybershot DSC-P150 -- the new one
with a 7.2-megapixel resolutions; we mentioned it a couple weeks ago
-- and just noticed for the first time that you can replace the lenses
on this model. I don't know if that's a new thing for this body of
Cybershot, but either way it's pretty great. The P150 just went from
'considering' to 'probably' on my personal buy list (I'm in the market
for a camera).
Sorry the picture is so small. Apparently Sony isn't as proud of
their lens as I am.

You know, this whole having
a social life thing is not conducive at all to cooking you kids your
gadget breakfast. Fortunately for me, Panasonic and Sony have provided
some low-hanging fruit this morning with the launch of several new
digital cameras, including a really nice looking CyberShot [pictured]
with a 7-megapixel sensor. And by "nice looking" I mean "pretty
cheap," as Sony plans to launch the DSC-P150 for less than $500. I was
almost going to buy a camera today, but now I may end up waiting a
bit.
Panasonic's 5 new Lumix models look decent, too, with 3.4- to
5-megapixel options and 12x optical zoom on the FZ model line.

The PStwo has been
announced! The new SCPH-70000 CB series is a new network-ready
Playstation 2 that looks a lot like the existing model, only made
smaller and more compact. There are a load of new peripherals, as
well, but they are mostly just new vertical stands and a new Multitap
(for hooking more than 2 players up to the console at once).
Of course, if you play a hard drive-based game like Final
Fantasy XI, you'll have to keep using the old model.
The thing is, though, at least in this press release, they aren't
calling it the PStwo. Maybe they aren't going to brand it separately
this time. I'll try to get a better image here in a
bit. (Thanks, everybody!)
