Portability: Keep Your Cell Number When
You Switch, But What Happens to the Old
Phone?
05/31/2004 02:00 PM
"Number portability" began in November for parts of the country, but on Monday it will be available throughout the nation. Millions of cellular phone users are about to discover that when they switch companies they can keep their number, but a new phone will be required. One company offers consumers an easy way to get rid of old cell phones and get paid cash for doing it. [PRWEB May 21, 2004]

Motorola's V551

Motorola's V551 03/14/2005 04:23 PM
The V551 is a Quad band clam style flip phone released last fall by Motorola. Outstanding features of the V551 include a VGA camera with video recording capabilities, one-touch web and camera access, EDGE high-speed transfer rates, Bluetooth wireless technology, and a crisp, clear, bright, 65k TFT colour (176 x 220 pixels) internal display. The phone has a monochrome 2-line external display that displays time, call information, battery, and signal strength and features a blue backlight. A VGA camera lens and self portrait mirror sit above the display allowing the user to capture photos. The camera does not have a flash though it has 4x digital zoom and dedicated one touch camera key for one touch video capture and playback. The camera allows for 10 second video clips and the phone features 5 MB of user memory. Up to 1000 entries are able to be stored in the phone plus up to an additional 250 on SIM card. The V551 is 3.5" x 1.87" x 0.83" (49mm x 89mm x 24.6mm) and weighs 4.4 oz (114g) and contains a standard Lithium-Ion 780 mAh battery that gives the phone a standby time of up to 235 hours and talk time of up to 425 minutes. The phone also features MP3 & polyphonic ringtones, a 22 Khz polyphonic speaker, picture phonebook, voice-activated dialing, built-in hands-free speaker phone, MMS, SMS, predictive text and SMTP, POP3, IMAP4 email client, and other features including a calculator, currency converter, date and clock, datebook with reminder alerts, an alarm clock and voice record. The buttons are large and easy to press making the phone a breeze to use when text messaging or dialing long numbers. The menu is easy to navigate and doesn't take long to master the functions. The phone has a good selection of cool animated screensavers, wallpapers and ringtones that make the it fun to use and easily customised. A disadvantage to this phone is that it flips open quite easily. Spymac discovered this as the phone opened itself a couple of times while stashed inside a bag when not in use. Along with the V551, Spymac tested out Motorola's Bluetooth Headset. Using the headset is simple and straightforward and can be done by charging the headset and then pairing it with the phone. The pairing process was straightforward and took less than a minute. The sound quality of this headset was about average. The headset heavily picked up background noise, making it hard for the person on the other line to hear. It was also quite bulky and uncomfortable, but many users would be willing to put up with some of these negative qualities to have a wireless headset. The V551's clean and stylish design, MP3 ringtones, and VGA camera set this phone apart from many others and makes it appealing to the young market, while many of the other features like Bluetooth, and high-speed EDGE data transfer, and Quad band GSM frequency range appeal to professionals and business consumers. These features, along with the mass appeal, make the V551 one of the top phones in this price range on the market. Sample picture Pros: Excellent bright, sharp screen Bluetooth Quad band Good battery life Built-in IM client Cons: No external photo caller ID Slightly heavy If your company has a product you would like Spymac to review, please send an email to news@spymac.com.

Bursting Motorola's Bubble

Bursting Motorola's Bubble 07/28/2004 02:33 PM
A number of outlets are critical of the Motorola Wi-Fi/cell phone: TechDirt and TheFeature emphasize how limited the phone's use will be because it only operates on 802.11a. Also, as we noted yesterday, it sounds like this platform would make a tough sell because it requires APs from Avaya and Proxim or upgrades to existing Proxim APs. The solution isn't ideal and neither is the HP/T-Mobile device, which doesn't include voice capabilities over Wi-Fi. These are pretty typical first attempts and they'll certainly improve with future iterations. However, the enterprise solutions like Motorola's will have a tough road ahead of them. Cellular operators are typically very slow to embrace change, especially anything that may be perceived as threatening their voice business, which voice over Wi-Fi may. I'll be interested to see which operator Motorola actually launches this with and which enterprises actually use it....

Motorola's A780 See-Through Smartphone

Motorola's A780 See-Through Smartphone 07/28/2004 01:20 PM

motorola_a780_01.jpg imageInfosync has some hinkfo about another one of the phones announced by Motorola this week, the A780, a Linux-based handset that will run on EDGE (new wireless broadband fastness) networks. And while it's full-featured as anything -- 1.3-megapixel camera, gostosa! -- the most interesting thing about the A780 is its screen. Through a hole in the flip-top basic information like Caller ID can be seen, while the full display is accessible when opened. It's a smart design; hopefully developers will take advantage of it.
