Sniffing around in Yongsan with Dan

Sniffing around in Yongsan with Dan 06/05/2005 11:34 PM
Dsc00004
I just got back from a short trip to Yongsan with Dan Gillmor. Yongsan is one of two electronics districts in Seoul. One of the larger buildings full of shops was closed for some reason and there weren't very many shoppers around. This made walking around easier, but probably didn't give us the full effect. In Tokyo, we have an electronics district called Akihabara which many people compare Yongsan to. There were more similarities than I expected, but some differences. I found in Yongsan, and Seoul in general, places are more spacious than the equivalent areas in Japan. Shops generally seemed cleaner and the districts a bit better organized than in Akihabara. Speaking of smells, many of the smells oddly familiar from Tokyo, although there were some different ones. One thing which contributed to the difference in smells was that there were food markets such as fresh vegetables and grilled meats interspersed in the market, which Akihabara doesn't have.

Dan was prowling for cheap memory, but either because we didn't bargain, or because we didn't know where to look, we didn't find any.

It was a lot of fun, but it would probably have been more fruitful with a seasoned guide. I would say that overall, there were maybe more shops than Akihabara, but a bit less diversity. (We didn't see a single Macintosh.) Having said that, I'm not sure we were able to explore the whole thing so my view may not be accurate.

Server Side CSS Sniffing with PHP

Server Side CSS Sniffing with PHP 02/17/2004 07:51 AM

Richard Allsebrook writes about sniffin g the user agent to serve browser-specific style sheets (via c ss vault).

FWIW, my opinion is that in the long run this is more trouble than it's worth since it requires maintaining multiple style sheets, but if you wish to use this technique, TopStyle Pro's "CSS Export" may provide some help. This feature takes a style sheet and creates a "downgraded" version by stripping out styles problematic to a specific browser.

Smog-sniffing Sensors

Smog-sniffing Sensors 09/16/2004 09:29 AM
David Pescovitz: My latest article for TheFeature is about the Urban Pollution Project, a big research effort in the UK that uses bike-mounted carbon monoxide sensors and bluejacking to rate the air we breathe.
"Mobile sensors that are geographically tracked could... give a broad and dense picture of how pollution affects urban spaces and the people within them," says Urban Pollution investigator Anthony Steed, a computer science researcher at the University College London. "If you have several hundred or thousand sensors, you could give them to commuters and they'd make a map of the city's pollution."

Cancer-sniffing dogs

Cancer-sniffing dogs 09/24/2004 05:36 AM
David Pescovitz: Scientists report that dogs can smell disease in the urine of bladder cancer patients. In the study, published in this week's Br itish Medical Journal, the canines successfully identified a cancer patient's urine sample placed among six control samples 41 percent of the time, far better than the 14 percent expected by chance. From an Associated Press article on the research:
"Perhaps the most intriguing finding, though, was in a comparison patient whose urine was used during the training phase. All the dogs unequivocally identified that urine as a cancer case, even though screening tests before the experiment had shown no cancer. Doctors conducted more detailed tests on the patient and found a life-threatening tumor in the right kidney."

Danes invent bomb-sniffing GM flowers 01/27/2004 05:17 PM
GM plants change color in the presence of landmines.
The genetically modified weed has been coded to change color when its roots come in contact with nitrogen-dioxide (NO2) evaporating from explosives buried in soil.

Within three to six weeks from being sowed over land mine infested areas the small plant, a Thale Cress, will turn a warning red whenever close to a land mine.

Bluetooth As A Way Of Sniffing Out
Hidden Expensive Gadgets?

Bluetooth As A Way Of Sniffing Out
Hidden Expensive Gadgets?
06/17/2005 03:33 PM
What is it about new technologies and crime that make people simply assume that it must be true? Last year we talked about polic e passing on urban legends about certain crimes. The latest questionable police warning is pointed out with reasonable skepticism by Engadget saying that police in the UK are warning that crooks are using Bluetooth to sniff out hidden computers and phones that people leave in their cars. The idea is that the crook would walk around with a Bluetooth-enabled phone and look for profiles to link up with. If one is there, then he knows that the car he's next to has something Bluetooth-enabled in it, making it worthwhile to break-in. Or, so goes the theory. The police don't seem to have any evidence of this, but they estimate that more than half of all car break-ins now involve this technique. They don't actually appear to have caught anyone who's done this, so it seems like someone came up with this possibility, and now they assume that any Bluetooth-enabled gadget that's been stolen must have been stolen that way.
