Semiconductor Association Weighs in on
Chinese Standard
03/06/2004 01:49 AM
The Semiconductor Industry Association is calling on the Chinese government to drop its proprietary Wi-Fi encryption mechanism: The Chinese government recently said that only products that comply with its own encryption scheme will be allowed in China and foreign companies can only make gear based on the standard in partnership with handpicked Chinese firms that are privy to the encryption technology. I've noticed that recent pleas from foreign companies or groups to the Chinese government tend to focus on why a Chinese standard would hurt the Chinese market. They argue that the Chinese IT industry will slow because Chinese firms won't be able to access innovations made by companies around the world because they'll be required to stick to their own unique standard. Maybe groups like the Semiconductor Industry Association figure China doesn't care if its plan hurts foreign companies but that it might care if its plan hinders its own companies. We've been following developments on this issue and you can read some recent news about the likelihood of a formal WTO complaint here....

It is reported that the sudo application uses the graphical interface clock instead of the system clock. When sudo is executed via Apple's Terminal.app and then the laptop is placed in sleep mode and subsequently woken up, the laptop may take 10 - 20 seconds to update the graphical clock. As a result, a physically local user can wake up the laptop and execute sudo commands with root privileges without having to authenticate within the 10 - 20 second period. New Sony Cybershots, HP Photosmarts,
Including Sony T3 (Rawr!)
08/30/2004 09:56 AM

Sony_DSC-T3.jpg imageGott im Himmel, ze cameras! There have been like two dozen new cameras announced in the last few weeks as various manufacturers start ramping up for Christmas, and Sony and HP are no exception. Among the new Sonys announced today are two pocket-sized beauties that I want right now: the T3, an update to the T1 and Japan-only T11, a 5.1-megapixel camera that is Sony's thinnest at less than three-quarters of an inch; and the DSC-L1, a candy bar 4.1-megapixel unit that is only 3.75-inches long. Just when I was ready to buy a new camera Sony has to muck it all up with at least two that really do it for me. Oh, and there's also the new DSC-V3, a 7-megapixel unit that looks mighty fine, as well.

The HPs, well, they are okay, but I'll be honest, they don't get me all riled up as much as the two featherweight cameras from Sony do. If they fixed the middling image quality of the T1 in the T3, that may be my next sidearm. Living Room has a bunch of the press releases, and I'll add to this post if any more info comes through during the day.

MT3 Opinion 05/27/2004 03:13 PM

A Line in the Sand: Here's a good, level-headed opinion on why the Movable Type 3.0 controversy shouldn't be one.

People feel like they have been betrayed… with all this talk of people jumping ship. Half of you would still fall into the free release category! Doesn’t anyone realize what MT will be turning into? If these people are making MT their livelihood, judging by their great track record, you can count on a quality product that will have a devoted team working to constantly make it better. [...]

Isn't there anything better to get all up in arms about? Too many of you are acting alarmed because you feel like you have to, this hive-mentality is ridiculous! If you have such a huge site, with so many authors, so many blogs and can't find the funds, then just simply don't upgrade right now.

While Sony Tries To Become Apple,
Samsung Tries To Become Sony
05/13/2004 03:41 AM
Has anyone noticed that it's becoming increasingly difficult to tell Samsung from Sony? It appears that almost everything Sony does, Samsung does as well. So, it's really no surprise that a little over a month after Sony announced plans to build out retail stores more for advertising than for sales, Samsung plans to do the same thing. Of course, while Sony says they're more interested in using the stores for advertising, Samsung has gone one step further. They believe so strongly that this "store" is just for advertising that they won't sell you anything at the store. It's for showcasing products only. Also, a random note in the article, but the same week that Sony and Nintendo announced their plans for their next generation handheld gaming devices, this article also mentions that Samsung is planning for its own N-Gage like phone/gaming device. Apparently, the dismal failure of the N-Gage isn't enough to scare them off.

Last Sunday's column, about the entertainment industry's latest effort to restrict our ability to make use of the copyrighted material we've purchased, took the technology industry to task for a belated response. Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association, challenged me on that, saying the response was as quick and effective as he's seen from the industry to any challenge. Shapiro was, indeed, quick to jump into the fray, but the bulk of the tech industry didn't wake up nearly fast enough. Meanwhile, I'll take this opportunity to ask you again to contact your U.S. senators and express your strong opposition to the bill in question, S.2560. There's no time to waste. The text of Shapiro's note, edited slightly with his permission, is posted below. More...

BetaVote.com If we had our say - things would be very different. This is obviously not very reliable data but thought provoking non the less. I am pretty sure the 90 to 10 in Kerrys favor is a just about an accurate measure of Denmarks opinion.
