“Father” of Mac platform aims to make
computers easier to use
01/05/2005 07:26 PM
Jef Raskin, credited with being the “father” of the Macintosh computer and former Apple employee #31, has recently obtained $2 million in start up funding to make computers easier to use. Raskin is featured today in an article by the California-based Pacifia Tribune. "We formed the Raskin Center for Humane Interface," he says. "And we have been funded by a multi-national corporation for $2 million. Our plan is to work out of this office to show the world how to make computers much easier to use." Raskin wrote the groundbreaking book, "The Humane Interface," which has now been translated into dozens of languages and is part of most university computer courses. The new business is an offshoot of the philosophical work begun in the book. Raskin's concept involves "unified" computer programs. Instead of multiple applications that must be "opened" before they can be used, Raskin's model allows a computer user to simply shift between word processing, spread sheets, photo manipulation, and just about everything else through simple "command sets." His new project also involves his son, Aza, a 20-year-old college student. With an eye to the reality of the business world, Aza says the purpose of the Raskin Center for Humane Interface won't be to put computer companies out of business, it will "save them money in technical support." The Raskins say they are confident that the Raskin Center for Humane Interface will be offering the world an authoritative product within 18 months.

How Property Management Software Can
Help Make Filing Your Taxes Easier

How Property Management Software Can
Help Make Filing Your Taxes Easier
03/14/2005 05:57 PM
Tax time can become very stressful for many real estate investors, it is a time when you need to get all your financials in order to present to the government for your yearly tax filings. Many investors try to manually work through their incomes and expenses on paper, going through numerous receipts, checks, etc. The job becomes very tedious and error prone, potentially leading to tax filing errors and the hence the dreaded tax audits. The good news is that there are better alternatives, mainly in the form of property management software. These software applications can really help speed up your tax filings, and not only that, they can also give you additional reports that can assist you in getting better returns from your investment properties. Technology Easier for Small Businesses
04/30/2004 04:35 PM
The small business segment is a unique audience with special requirements. In order for technology geared to small businesses to be accessible and effective, it must be affordable, easy to manage and incorporate support programs. A strategic relationship recently announced in London between Microsoft and British Telecommunications (BT), one of Europe's leading providers of telecommunications services, aims to transform the quality and delivery of technology available to small businesses in the UK. A market test of the new initiative in two regions of Scotland will target this currently underserved segment of the business community and seek to narrow the technology gap between large and small businesses.

Among the many buzz phrases being tossed around these days is policy-based computing. But the new thing, the new paradigm, if you will, is using policies to control and monitor your entire network.

Newbury Networks Tries to Make Hay from
Wi-Fi as Convention Starts
07/22/2004 04:23 PM
Newbury Networks wardrove through Boston for a few hours and found lots of open access points and promiscuous Wi-Fi cards: They'd like to piggyback some publicity on the upcoming Democratic National Convention by noting that it's easy to find unsecured access point and easy for a Wi-Fi adapter to associate with an unknown point without user intervention. Still, the real issue is whether DNC operatives and even press will be wandering around outside the Wi-Fi-less convention center with laptops trying to connect to random networks or with their cards trying on their own. It's much more likely that those attending the DNC won't take basic security precautions like using a VPN tunnel or even turning off their wireless card when there's no network they're trying to use. Still, with this knowledge in hand--what do you do with it? Newbury Networks says in their press release, this potentially sets up a dangerous security scenario based on the level of open Wi-Fi networks in range of the FleetCenter. Sure. And?...

Is It The Clumps Or The Links That Make
Networks Interesting?

Is It The Clumps Or The Links That Make
Networks Interesting?
02/16/2004 02:51 PM
Roland Piquepaille writes "So-called social networking is very popular these days, as show the proliferation of services like Friendster, Orkut and dozens of others. But do the companies behind these services have any idea of what is hidden inside their complicated networks? When these networks reach a size of millions of users, it's not an easy task. A researcher at the University of Michigan is trying to help, with a new method for uncovering patterns in complicated networks, from football conferences to food webs. My blog contains more details and references about this non-traditional method. It also includes a spectacular representation of the Internet and another image showing a food web at Little Rock Lake." Actually, I think the more interesting aspect of this research is the fact that they're trying to determine "clumps" of related activity by actively ignoring the explicit links between them, and then seeing if the assumed clumps are actually linked together. While so many of these social networking sites are focused on making links explicit, this suggests that there might be another way to do things, focused on letting the system do the grouping based on who should be linked, rather than forcing people to make (somewhat arbitrary) explicit links.

In which Tom visits PARC...

In which Tom visits PARC... 06/24/2005 09:22 PM

In what is definitely a highlight of my weirdest holiday ever, today I got to travel to California Ave on the Caltrain and visit PARC to talk to them about my stuff around Social Software for Set-Top Boxes and the work that Matt Webb and I did over the last couple of years at the BBC. It was possibly a more exciting trip for me than it strictly should have been, I fear - I think even I was surprised by how nerdy I turned out to be. Trevor F. Smith was looking after me - he took a few embarrassing fanboy shots of me lurking by the PARC sign and then gave me a bit of a tour around the floating earthquake-secure buildings, past the self-assembly robot room and around the back of the laser experiments suite. As you do.

Having a native nerd show me around was beyond cool. At a certain point we ducked into a room with an enormous photocopier in it, Trevor pulled back a little door and pointed inside. "That's the world's first ethernet cable", he said. I'm embarrassed to say that this got a little sincere 'oooh' noise out of me. But that was nothing compared to when we passed the door with the 'Smart Matter' sign on it. The door was very firmly shut, and all the windows had blinds so you couldn't see inside, but secretly I knew they were developing Flubber. Trevor refused to confirm or deny this speculation.

The session itself went relatively well - I got some interesting questions about some of the work we did on Phonetags and some useful directions to investigate in terms of more formal directions in tagging and hypertext research. I also got to hear a bit about the research that they've been doing, and was delighted to see that we were coming to some very similar conclusions from very different directions.

After our chat, Trevor was decent enough to drive me back into San Francisco. The views along the way were completely stunning and he took me up to pose by this really grotesque statue of Father Junipero Serra that points out over Crystal Springs lake. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on the pictures, but only in as much as I like to have a record of what I've done, not because they're good pictures of me. Trevor seems to have a particular knack for making men look like shabby balding transexuals in his photographs. I'm not entirely sure I'll be sharing them with the world.
