Raises Money for Lawyers
03/08/2004 11:18 PM

Washington Post: Ashcroft Funds Under Scrutiny. Attorney General John D. Ashcroft's 1998 leadership political action committee, Spirit of America, and his Senate reelection campaign committee, Ashcroft 2000, raised more than $100,000 last year in order to pay a fine and legal costs for violating campaign finance laws, according to Federal Election Commission records and Garrett Lott, treasurer of both committees

The Lawyers and Their Money

The Lawyers and Their Money 05/12/2004 11:17 AM

This one goes into the Shameless Hall of Fame: Some of the lawyers who sued Microsoft for its predatory behavior against California customers are doing their best to fuel the public's contempt for the legal profession. They're asking for more than $250 million in fees, as the AP reports today -- "about $3,000 per hour for one lawyer, more than $2,000 an hour each for 34 other attorneys and $1,000 an hour for administrative work." This is beyond absurd. We get ripped off once by Microsoft, and now the lawyers -- whose deal with Microsoft gives precious little individual customers -- are bellying up to the trough in ways that would embarrass anyone who had an ounce of shame. The judge in this case should say no. Give the lawyers a reasonable fee, not this grotesque lottery score. It's the customers who deserve most of that money.

Ashcroft's terror warning

Ashcroft's terror warning 05/29/2004 10:54 AM
One of Ashcroft's "credible sources" from last week's terror warning came from Abu Hafs al-Masri Brigades, a group that has also claimed responsibility for the blackout in the Northeast last year, the power outage in London, the Madrid bombing and has been called "notoriously unreliable" by U.S. officials. “The only thing they haven't claimed credit for recently is the cicada invasion of Washington". Ashcroft blames the FBI who have admitted that claims that terrorists were 90 percent ready to attack came not from al-Qaida, but from the Abu Hafs al-Masri Brigades’ statements.

Jeremiah writes "Amidst the public ballyhoo about how rampant P2P piracy is costing the music business its very life (gasp! NO!), BMI announced it collected a record level of revenue and royalty payout to its artist members. From their press release: "BMI has reported revenues of $673 million for the 2004 fiscal year, an increase of nearly $43 million, 6.8% over the prior year. Royalties of more than $573 million were distributed to our songwriters, composers and music publishers, an increase of $40 million or 7.5% from the previous year, and the most ever paid by an American PRO." Another interesting tidbit: "During the period 1995-2004, BMI had an average annual revenue growth rate of 9%..." If I read this right, BMI has been reporting solid growth over the last nine years, which makes me question the industry's claims about P2P. Either P2P ate into their growth (not mentioned), they found a way to cope with it (plausible), or it may actually help music sales. Whatever. Reminds me a bit of a spec I did for a life-insurance company's radio ad: Money , Money, Money (mp3 file)."

Money 2005: Microsoft Unveils Simplified
Approach to Financial Management and
Helps People Make Sense of Their Money
09/21/2004 08:41 AM
Marking the largest development effort for Microsoft(R) Money since the personal finance software was launched 13 years ago, Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) today announced Microsoft Money 2005 Premium, Deluxe, Standard and Small Business. Completely rebuilt to simplify daily financial tasks, Money 2005 is designed to answer the growing number of consumer requests for a simple solution that addresses the three primary areas of financial concern: tracking account balances, monitoring spending and paying bills. Consumers today have less time than ever to spend managing their finances, which has contributed to the number of American households banking online -- due to its convenience and efficiency -- reaching nearly 33 million.(1) Money 2005 builds on this trend by helping people access all their accounts in one place and providing automated tools that reduce or eliminate the manual entry required by traditional personal finance software.

James Farmer has posted a draft version as well as a summary of his Centered Communication: Weblogs and Aggregation in the Organization. A very interesting read and well worth a visit. Blogs are now being felt worldwide and business as well as the non for profit service sectors are beginning to feel the affects generated by this communication medium and what displacements will be happening as it takes off! This will be mentioned in my Bots, Blogs and News Aggregators presentation.
