Apple: The "i" Stands for iconic

Apple: The "i" Stands for iconic 06/01/2004 01:53 PM

ipod_vv.jpg imageApple's silhouette iPod ads have been far more pervasive than anyone probably imagined, and now thanks to an anonymous New Yorker (or, more likely, New Yorkers) armed with a Sharpie the posters have become a platform for expressing the various feelings of hate, jealousy, passion, and, yes, poetry, that the tropical-hued advertisements and their white audio sperm inspire. Starting with the same argument levied against the iPod's great uncle, the Walkman, the phrase, "The "i" in iPod stands for isolation," was scribbled on the first ad, replicated down the line with "irrational," "insecure," and other iWords taking the place of "isolation." Deep! Ironically, the people that felt the need to parley an mp3 player into social critique are exactly the people we wear headphones to avoid. (Thanks, Matt!)

Training
03/14/2005 05:57 PM
Injecting e-Learning into the Corporate Training Program - The opportunity to improve employee knowledge and capabilities through e-Learning ranges from the most senior executive to the newest hire. This is due to the unprecedented reach of the web, its minimal cost, and its increasing ability to deliver the highest quality content - including video – to end users. Few areas of business are better suited than HR training and Professional Development to leverage the Internet. The nature and needs of corporate training matches the strengths of the web almost perfectly. For example, training involves delivering content to many people who are often in dispersed locations while the web is an increasingly reliable, powerful, ubiquitous and low cost media. Day Is Night: Microsoft Says Security Is

Really not quite sure what to make of this, but apparently Microsoft believes that if they just say something it must be true. In the past few weeks there have been so many major Microsoft security problems, it's been nearly impossible to keep count. Yet, Steve Ballmer is going to stand on stage with a straight face at Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference and claim that security is their competitive advantage. Even worse, he's doing this despite claiming the same thing last year, which included a number of promises about Microsoft's security upgrades, most of which they haven't actually done. Now, there are plenty of sites that bash Microsoft for being Microsoft, and that's really not worth wasting time over. However, if Microsoft really wants to claim they're serious about security, shouldn't they show us they're serious about security, rather than just telling us?

for competitive advantage

Open source presents a large potential competitive advantage for hardware and software vendors, and vendors of complementary or substitute services. Linux has contributed greatly to the adoption and success of OSS. Companies such as IBM, HP, Red Hat, Oracle, and recently, Novell, have invested in, and legitimized the use of Linux for enterprise applications -- including datacenter operations. Attorney/analyst John Koenig offers a listing of open source strategies that can bring great competitive advantages to companies if implemented correctly. Read on at ITMJ ...

Is The iPod Anti-Competitive?

Is The iPod Anti-Competitive? 08/06/2004 12:57 PM
The French online music store, Virgin Mega, has apparently decided that rather than get accused by Apple of hacking to get their songs to play on the iPod, they're simply going to sue Apple for being anti-competitive in not being willing to license their FairPlay DRM. As many people pointed out during the whole RealNetworks mess, all the site really needs to do is offer songs for sale in a non-DRM'd format such as MP3 and they'll work just fine on the iPod. It is amusing, of course, that this supposedly "anti-competitive" move is actually limiting Apple's market. Apple has made it clear that they don't make money on iTunes, but on the iPod. By making it so other music stores can't get their music on the iPod Apple is simply making the iPod less attractive. Is it illegal to make bad business decisions for your own company?

What's cooler than hanging with your fellow iPod users on Miami's South Beach on September 1st? How about going home with a brand new iPod mini in your pocket?

Yeah, that probably got your attention. But thanks to event sponsors iPodResQ, the iPod mini is just one prize among many that we'll be giving away at the South Beach iPod Garage Party. So what do you have to do to win? All you have to do is show up with your iPod, connect it to our sound system, and play "DJ" for twelve minutes as you share the highlights of your own music library with the rest of us (as many songs as you like, as long as it fits within the time limit). Yep, it's your very own twelve minutes of fame.
