Oracle CEO testifies in antitrust case
07/01/2004 03:37 PMCEO of Oracle, Larry Ellison testified Wednesday in an antitrust case
involving the attempted takeover of PeopleSoft. Oracle’s CEO
testified that it would be in his companie’s interest to
continue supporting PeopleSoft’s products if the takeover was
allowed to go through. The Justice Department disagrees and believes
that Oracle’s acquisition of PeopleSoft would reduce the number
of vendors of specific specialized software.
The software in question is critical to human resources and corporate
finances departments for large corporations. This entire legal battle
is the aftermath of a hostile takeover attempt by Oracle that was then
halted by a lawsuit from the Justice Department.

02/05/2005 10:10 PMA 24-year-old former American Online software engineer pleaded guilty
to stealing 92 million screen names and e-mail addresses and selling
them to spammers, setting off an avalanche of up to seven billion
unsolicited e-mails.
Associated Press reports that the stolen list of 92 million AOL
addresses included multiple addresses used by each of AOL's estimated
30 million customers. It is believed to be still circulating among
spammers.
Jason Smathers of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, entered the guilty
plea to conspiracy charges in U.S. District Court in Manhattan today.
He is likely to face from 18 months to two years in prison following a
May 20 sentencing. He also faces mandatory restitution of between
$200,000 and $400,000, the amount the government estimates AOL spent
as a result of the e-mails.
Smathers, who was fired by AOL last June, used another employee's
access code to steal the list of AOL customers in 2003 from its
headquarters in Dulles, Va. He allegedly sold the list for $28,000 to
Sean Dunaway, of Las Vegas, who used it to send unwanted gambling
advertisements to subscribers of AOL, the world's largest Internet
provider. Charges are pending against Dunaway.
