Serbia proper was liberated from the (Turkish) Ottoman Empire in the early 1800s, and united with the north in 1918.  There is absolutely no question, that if separated, the two regions would have very different economies. Just like there are vast differences between other ex-Yugoslavia states. And that is all after a century of common life, mostly under communism which tried to kill out (pun intended) all differences in religion and nationality.

In a much ballyhooed essay, Clay Shirky suggests that social software bears some of the responsibility for Dean's loss in Iowa and New Hampshire. David Weinberger, who has a good looking new blog at Corante, thinks the idea is dangerous speculation at best, and perhaps nonsense at worst. I agree. Blaming social software for Dean's loss is like is blaming the arrangement of deck chairs on the Titanic for its sinking. Most Americans still get the vast majority of their news from TV, and I think you have to look first at the idiotic and sometimes vitriolic press coverage of Dean (build him up so you can beat him down, "is he electable", the scream, etc.), plus Dean's own stumbles, for reasons for the failure of his insurgent campaign to do as well as the media predicted he would. Occam's Razor would suggest that is sufficient....

Someone who prefers to be anonymous sent in this opinion piece, supposedly written by an economics professor at Kyoto University looking at the troubles in the Japanese economy over the last thirteen years and then, at the very end, blaming it all on mobile phones. The article looks at consumer electronics, the entertainment industry and the automobile industry, but then shifts gears to look at mobile phones, noting that even while mobile phone sales are "booming," it's done nothing to help the economy. Then, the professor points out that so much mobile phone use is leading to high bills which "dampen household spending" (assuming, of course, that "household spending" doesn't include mobile phone bills). Then, even though he has already complained that entertainment revenues are down because there aren't "sufficient" services to provide them, he complains that Japanese young people are "wasting hours each day" text messaging and playing online games. Finally, he concludes: "The cell phone is the cause of the business slowdown as well as the erosion in young people's intelligence and scholastic abilities." So, basically, it sounds like the thesis is that spending on mobile phone service is somehow "bad" because it takes away from other spending, which is somehow "good." Seems a bit hard to back up.

The FTC has apparently decided to settle with a company that was pitching bogus diet patches online. They gave them a small fine, but it's for much less than the total amount they made off the stuff. There appear to be two claims here: one was that they violated CAN SPAM, and the second was that they violated the FTC Act since the patches didn't actually do anything. However, from the sound of the settlement, it appears that the company tap danced its way out of the spamming charge by pointing out that the FTC couldn't prove they did the spamming, since they had "affiliates" do the spamming for them. It appears the FTC has realized that the company was right. Despite the fact that the company was probably pushing others to do the spamming for it, if they didn't do the actual spamming, should they be held liable for spamming? Of course, there's also the followup. If they know it was the affiliates, then why not go after those affiliates as well? That should scare off some of these spammers from signing up for affiliate programs.

I'm sure I'm not the only person who noticed that plenty of the annoying myDoom related messages that found their way into my inbox in the last few days came from anti-virus companies telling me (incorrectly) that I had sent someone a virus. I didn't send anyone the virus. As everyone knows, myDoom works by spoofing the "from" address - just like almost every other virus/worm these days. So, why exactly, do anti-virus companies continue to send out these messages? Found over at Politech is a nice little rant about just how stupid it is that these anti-virus companies are continuing this practice. In fact, the author claims that they're just as bad as spammers. First of all, they know that these viruses and worms are spoofing return addresses - yet they continue to send out such "you've sent a virus" emails, even when they can be pretty sure it's not true. At the very least, they should be smart enough to not send out such a message on viruses that are known to spoof emails. Second, many of these messages include annoying advertising for the anti-virus product itself. Thus, it's unsolicited commercial email advertising - and it even violates the CAN SPAM law by not offering an opt-out. So, from now on, when you get such bogus anti-virus reports, you should report them as spam to the proper authorities.

Here's a great interview with William Gibson, who is on the road promoting the paperback of his brilliant novel of apophenia run wild, Pattern Recognition (see my review, too).

"When you write a science-fiction novel set in some sort of recognizable future, as soon as you finish it you have the dubious pleasure of watching it acquire a patina of quaint technological obsolescence. For instance, there are no cell phones in Neuromancer. I couldn't have foreseen them. It would have seemed corny, like Dick Tracy wrist radios."

And he never set out to predict how we might be living a few decades hence. "I always assumed that social-science fiction - anything set on Earth in a not-too-distant future - is just a mutant version of the present. But the easiest hook to hang on me was that I was a futurist. I had always maintained that I was squinting at the present in a certain way."

An undertaker in Tel Aviv explains that they can ship the body home to Wisconsin at a cost of $10,000 or the mother-in-law could be buried in Israel for US$500.

The man says, "We'll ship her home."

The undertaker asks, "Are you sure? That's an awfully big expense and we can do a very nice burial here."

As George W. is sworn in today for a second term, it occurs to me how grateful American Jews should be that he won.  For those Americans, of whom there are a fair number (see my Israel Essay for statistics), who believe that Jews have too much political power and, in particular, that Jewish Wall Street financiers control American politics behind the scenes, imagine what feelings a Kerry victory would have provoked.  We had an anti-gun candidate who had presented himself to voters for decades as Irish-American but was in fact one-quarter Jewish.  A majority of American Jews voted for this candidate, who was also supported with massive funds from George Soros, a Jewish baron of Wall Street, resulting in Kerry and Democratic "527 committees" spending $292 million during the campaign (versus $113 million on the Republican side, according to www.publicintegrity.org).&nb sp; If it were Kerry being sworn in today that would have confirmed everything that a lot of folks believe about a Jewish conspiracy controlling American politics.

One group that does seem to be celebrating today are America's gynecologists.  My aviation habit has thrown me into contact with a lot of ob-gyns, none of whom have shed a tear over the defeat of John Edwards, the Democratic Vice-Presidential candidate, who made much of his money suing ob-gyns for cerebral palsy cases.

Just finished Philip Roth's latest novel, Th e Plot Against America, a worthy addition to any Jewish pilot's bookshelf.  Roth concentrates on his usual terrain of Newark, NJ Jewish family life.  This time the background is an America in which Charles Lindbergh has beaten FDR in the 1940 presidential election.  Lindbergh proceeds to negotiate deals with Japan and Germany rather than enter World War II and the federal government initiates some programs designed to disperse Jews from their traditional neighborhoods in places such as Newark out into the American heartland, e.g., rural Kentucky.

A lame ending and not as good as Am erican Pastoral, for which Roth won the Pulitzer, but a lot better than Roth's early novels and worth a try even if you were at some point forced to read Portnoy's Complaint.
