"Imagine fresh laundry taking flight from a clothes dryer," says the O'Reilly press release, "a woman posed inside a perfume bottle, or a triptych that shows the play of light and shadow over the facade of a building at different times during the day." Interesting ideas and in "Creating Photomontages with Photoshop: A Designer's Notebook"(US $24.95) well-known French artists reveal the techniques used in creating these and other projects.

Hacking MT book coming soon

Hacking MT book coming soon 04/06/2005 05:22 PM

I've been working on a few chapters for this book going on at least a year now, if not more. Let's put it this way: when we started, we had barely any contact with folks at Six Apart and I had to strain my friendship with the Trotts to get them to answer questions about the someday-beta MT 3.0 we heard was on the horizon. When I wrote my chapters, MT 2.6 was new, but Ben and Jay completely rewrote the rest of the book when 3.1 was released (and two authors ended up employed by 6A so they know every in and out of the software).

Don't listen to what Ben says here, he was a superhero (along with Jay) that saved the project and made it what it is.

Book...

First thoughts about Panther: Address
Book...
10/29/2003 12:10 AM

Address Book under OSX has never been a particularly impressive application, but it's just about worked as a system wide piece of kit. Panther brings with it a number of changes and improvements and a couple of nasty unprovements too. There's some functionality here that I can't categorically say wasn't in Jaguar, so bear with me if I foul something up:

  • Every card in Address Book can have a picture associated with it. This is not new. However previously you were just able to pick up a picture and drop it whole onto the hole allocated for it, where it would sit greatly diminished in size and essentially unusable. The version in Panther introduces the lovely resize and crop functionality that's been in iChat AV since the beta. Very nice indeed;
  • The edit functionality now lasts when you change cards which is a good change. Previously editing an card meant entering it individually and clicking on the edit button. Now the edit button will remain depressed until you release it. It's not the UI approach I'd have taken, but it pretty much works;
  • The edit interface itself is a bit of a dog's dinner. The previously understated and probably not very clear grey + and - buttons have now become garishly red and green, the edit screen radically indents everything and moves stuff around to the extent that it's difficult to see what's going on and where your information has been moved to. An approach that highlighted the information rather than the labels might have been better;
  • Also noticed for the first time is the 'send updates' functionality - which I'm sure has been there for ages. It appears to be a way of informing everyone in your address book of any and all changes to your personal address card. I'm interested, but too scared, to see how this might work...

Ars Technica review Panther 11/10/2003 11:20 PM
Ars Technica have a written another typically thorough and exhaustive review. The editorial team have written great reviews of all versions of Mac OS X, from Beta to Jaguar, and now they've published a lengthy assessment of Panther. An excellent read for those who are contemplating upgrading and those who already have. On a personal note - the Powerbook is back with Apple. I'm hoping to get it back in the next couple of days. Out of curiosity, I booted it up again on the morning it was due to get sent back - and, lo and behold, it came back to life! Ah well, hopefully Apple'll check it out to avoid any future panics occuring.
