Changes, Changes: Amazon Stops Printing
Pages, MIT Shuts Down TV Music
10/31/2003 08:30 PMTwo followups to popular stories this week. First there was the
suppose
d legal "loophole" that was going to let students at MIT broadcast
MP3s over their TVs. I still don't see how this is any different than
something like a Live365 broadcast, but what do I know? Anyway,
despite all the news articles saying how brilliant this was for
side-stepping legal issues, it appears that not everyone agrees. The
students who built the system claimed they had a license from the
Harry Fox Agency to use the music, but the Harry Fox Agency said that
was news to them. So, now, MIT has
shut down the system while the legal issues get sorted
out. Meanwhile, as the Authors Guild continued to
worry
a> about Amazon's full text search feature, Amazon has possibly
modified the system to
no longer permit printing of pages. I just went and checked, and
I could print out a page, so maybe I'm missing something here - or
maybe it's only for certain books. Of course, even if they did
implement this, I imagine that the easy work around for this is to
take a screen shot of the page, and print the image, but I've probably
violated the DMCA suggesting that.

03/19/2003 10:28 PM Amazon UK was taken down for
over an hour today after a rush of orders caused by apparently
mis-pricing Compaq HP iPAQ H5450 Pocket PCs and HP iPAQ H1910 Pocket
PCs at £23 GBP and
£7 GBP respectively (normally
priced at over £200 GBP each)!! I know a few people who have
ordered one or two ;) - Amazon is back up and running now but we're
all a bit in the dark as to whether we'll get our cut-price goods or
not. Logic and fair-play (and the Trades Description Act) dicatates
that we should get our goods - but I wonder....

Another Day, Another Pointless Patent
Battle
Another Day, Another Pointless Patent
Battle
04/08/2005 03:15 PMAnother day gone by and another story about
some company claiming a random patent concerning a business they're
not even in. In this case, it's a patent from the same company
that has managed to squeeze a ton of money out of companies by
claiming to own a patent on the compression of images used in .jpg
images. Now they claim they hold a patent on the concept behind DVRs,
thanks to a vague patent that talks about recording TV signals on
computers. Once again, you have to ask two important questions: how
is that non-obvious enough to deserve a patent? It was a clear
evolution of the technology. Second, why do we allow the patent
system to work this way when it's clearly not rewarding innovation at
all, but actively punishing those companies that innovate? Meanwhile,
with TiVo building up their own
patent portfolio, it looks
like we'll have yet another
paten
t cold war involving all of this nuclear stockpiling. At what
point do people realize that the system is broken? It's not
encouraging innovation. It's just making some patent lawyers
wealthier while taking money
out of research and development of
new, innovative products.

Sony Loses Patent Battle -- Told To Stop
Selling PlayStations In The US
03/28/2005 06:00 AMIf you're familiar with the word "haptics," you're familiar with the
company Immersion. They're the company that seems to own every
possible patent having to do with the haptics space, and any kind of
tactile response or force feedback device usually involves patents
that were first licensed from the company. So, in some ways, it's
pretty impressive that Sony has gotten as far as it has apparently
without licensing patents from the company. A court has found,
however, that Sony's force feedback controllers for the PlayStation
and PlayStation 2 violate Immersion's patents and not only have they
ordered the company to pay $90 million in damages, but also
told Sony it
can no longer sell either console in the US. Sony, of course,
will appeal the ruling, which will allow them to keep selling the
consoles in the meantime. Of course, this is the same Sony that keeps
insisting on
the
importance of stricter intellectual property enforcement to teach
violators a lesson. Funny what comes back to bite you...
