The 25 Member EU
04/30/2004 08:36 PM
The European Union welcomes 10 new members! As I
write this, the celebrations have started as Cyprus, the Czech
Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia
and Slovenia become members of the EU today.
While some folks are
gonna party
like crazy, others are warning of
doom
and gloom.
What do you think? Will this have significant effects on global
culture, politics, and economics - or will it merely represent a paper
change within the rarefied world of European diplomats, with little
other than localized effects on day to day life?

<div class="infobox">Where was the best place you have
ever been on vacation?</div>
The Galapagos islands, although I'm not sure I would call it a
vacation, cause every day was such a huge learning experience. No one
could have taught me that in a classroom.
<div class="infobox">What is your favourite
food?</div>
My favourite food is sushi. I like my sushi like I like my women,
naked on a bed of rice, minus the rice.
<div class="infobox">Do you have any pets?</div>
I have a wild cat that goes by the name Kittay, there are some
pictures of her in my gallery. I also have some fish but they come and
go, so no need mentioning them.
<div class="infobox">What is your favourite kind of
fish?</div>
To eat or to appreciate?
<div class="infobox">Appreciate!</div>
That would have to be the Humuhumunukunukuapua'a, hands down.
<div class="infobox">What is the one urge you often
get but never act on?</div>
I guess since this interview is PG, it would be breaking stuff. I
used to have a terrible temper as a kid, and my parents would send me
to my room. I would get so upset that I would start smashing my own
things, which would just make me more upset. I am glad I fight the
urges to smash stuff now since I now work at a glass desk, that could
be a expensive temper tantrum.
<div class="infobox">What brought you to
Spymac?</div>
Macworld NY did in 2002, as well as the iWalk. I think I was in the
market for a new laptop, and I wanted to find out if I should buy then
or wait for an update, so through my research I stumbled upon Spymac.
I used to go to other rumor sites, but never did they have a forums
where I could nag people about when I should by my new PowerBook.
<div class="infobox">What is your favourite Spymac
forum?</div>
The mod board, with the stripper pole and the... oh, you mean a public
one? I used to like the RLD a lot, but you can only read about the
same thing so many times, and I also found out way too much about
other members - you just dont need to know how many anatomically
correct chunks of rubber some people have. So I guess my favorite
forum is the <a
href="http://www.spymac.com/forums/threadlist.php?catid=9"
target="_blank">Lounge</a>, since it's laid back
and just general discussion.
<div class="infobox">How do you like working at night
time for Spymac?</div>
I am being paid for being on Spymac, how do you think I like it?
<div class="infobox">Have you made many friends
through Spymac?</div>
I have made several friends from Spymac. It has such a strong
community base that I dont know how anyone on here couldn't make a ton
of friends.
<div class="infobox">Why didn't you join the rest of
the Spymac team in Boston for Macworld?</div>
Many reasons. Most importantly it was my girlfriend's birthday that
weekend, and someone had to hold down the tech support fort.
<div class="infobox">Which three Spymac members would
you want to meet?</div>
Meeting anyone would mean revealing my true self, and since the world
isn't ready for me yet, I'll stay in hiding.
<div class="infobox">If you had to be stuck on an
island with three Spymac members, who would you choose?</div>
I guess I would be stuck on there with AtariST, and a bottle of
scotch. With Atari, I know we wouldn't be lost on that island for
long, we'd be picked up pretty quick, and the scotch would make the
awkwardness of just the two of us seem non-existent. What happens on
barren secluded islands, stays on barren secluded islands.
<div class="infobox">What kind of music are you into?
Who is your favourite musician?</div>
I am a huge fan of music, I like all genres, but if I had to pick a
single one to top the list it would be hip hop. It is the biggest
cultural movement since Rock and Roll in the late 50's early 60's. On
top of it all stands Kanye West. It's about time we have someone with
something to say other than they're gonna kill someone else.
<div class="infobox">Would you ever pose nude for a
magazine such as Playgirl or else for a large sum of
money?</div>
The adult industry already has a hedgehog, and well lets just say I'm
not sure I could compete with his, um, "gifted" genetics.
Although if I did, I think my back drop would be a funeral. You don't
see enough naked people at funerals. I think it would really lighten
things up a bit. In fact, that's a great idea, my funeral's dress code
is gonna be birthday suits. That will take some of the attention off
the dead guy in the box.
<div class="infobox">When you first joined Spymac you
had a reputation for causing a bit of trouble and you were sometimes a
bit of a jerk. You later became a Forum Moderator and now you're
working for Spymac. What caused this change in attitude with you on
the site?</div>
Hey now, are you saying I'm no longer a jerk? Well, when I first came
to Spymac I figured I would stir up the pot a bit. I remember I used
to rouse GadgetDon real good in the shouts about religion, and now I'm
working with him. I guess the reason that I turned the leaf, so to
say, was cause I was just too damn good at skirting the line and
figured that if I could be so damn good at being bad then I might as
well give the friendly thing a whirl. It's a lot better, cause now the
shock factor is back when I want it, and now they pay me for being a
jerk if I need to be. Hell, how can I complain with that?
<div class="infobox">Your avatars are great! You
should get some additional ones. Where did you get them?</div>
<a href="http://www.spymac.com/member.php?memberid=2794"
target="_blank">TimTheEnchanter </a> was kind
enough to make them for me on his own time, he is a tremendous artist
and was kind enough to do so, if you would like to see more contact
him cause I know I sure do.
<div class="infobox">If you could live at any time,
past or present, what would you choose?</div>
I think I would pick present day - I like things how they are.
<div class="infobox">If your home was on fire, what
would you grab on the way out?</div>
If my home was on fire I would probably only grab my cat and my tower.
Nothing pisses me off more than loosing my bookmarks and if I lost my
MP3s I would have no reason to live.
<div class="infobox">If you could be someone else for
a day, who would it be and why?</div>
I think I would be some real trashy female celebrity; maybe Paris
Hilton or Britney. I'd run around all day doing all the things I have
always said I would do if I were a girl, which would probably land me
in the slammer. That would be OK since there are plenty of nasty
things I could do in there still. Always wondered how easy it would
be to be a girl and "get" your way out of jail.
<div class="infobox">If someone gave you a few million
dollars, how would you spend it?</div>
On the market and make a few more.
<div class="infobox">If you could see anyone in
concert (time-travel is permitted), who would it be?</div>
Wow, now thats a humdinger of a question. I would have to say Yo-Yo
Ma, that would be one hell of a concert. Haha, all jokes aside,
probably everyone at Woodstock in '69, especially Jimi Hendrix's
rendition of the Star Spangled Banner.

</div>
Most definitely a dog person. Cats are evil, except my Grandma's cat,
who isn't evil.
<div class="infobox">Are you currently in school or

I'm a Freshman in High School, and no I don't have a job yet.
<div class="infobox">If you could only have one, a

my computer to communicate with friends.
<div class="infobox">Do you travel much? </div>

from holidays. Next summer, I'm going back home to England for about 3

<div class="infobox">What brought you to
Spymac?</div>
Constant pressure from fellow Spymac member, <a
href="http://www.spymac.com/member.php?memberid=24531">Bl
ackmyst</a>. Month after month I would watch him browse Spymac
for hours and hours and I never could understand his fascination with
this "online forum." Was there something I was missing?
What was so special about it that drew him in for the majority of day?
After much deliberation and several discussion with Blackmyst, I
finally succumbed to the pressure and became a Spymac member. Over
time, I finally understood why he spent so much time here.
<div class="infobox">What is your favourite
forum?</div>
I spend the majority of my time in the Lounge, but sometimes I wander
around the RLD.
<div class="infobox">You have personal relations with
another Spymac member, would you like to tell us a bit about
that?</div>
Blackmyst and I have been together as a couple for over two years
now. He was my first kiss, my first boyfriend, and my first love; so
this relationship/bond we have for each other is an extremely
important part of my life.
<div class="infobox">How long have you lived in
Texas?</div>
I was born and raised in Houston, Texas. Yeehah. I've been a full
blooded Texan for 19 years.
<div class="infobox">What is your opinion on
blogs?</div>
The Blogging community on Spymac is wonderful. The blogs are one of
the major reasons why I decided to join Spymac. It's a great outlet
to release pent up emotions, showcase your artwork/poetry, or just
write about your day. Not only do I enjoy blogging, but I enjoy
reading blogs as well. I spend alot of my time carousing member's
blogs while I'm on Spymac.
<div class="infobox">How did you choose your Spymac
username?</div>
My nickname is Kat (derived from Katherine) + Kitty + my year of
birth= <a
href="http://www.spymac.com/member.php?memberid=29527">ki
ttykat84</a>.
<div class="infobox">If you could buy one item from a
source of unlimited funds, what would that item be?</div>
The life of my grandpa back. My grandpa died not too recently, and I
only wish he was here longer. The time we spent together was time
spent too short. I want to tell him all the things I wish I could have
told him before his passing, but I never could seem to find the words.
I know it's impossible to buy someones life back, but I couldn't think
of any material objects I wanted, so this is my answer.
<div class="infobox">How did you get involved with the
CultSpy Awards?</div>
Being a big fan of the blogs here on Spymac, naturally I came across
RicTresa's blog. After reading entry one, I became hooked. So one
day as I was doing my routine check of all my favorite blogs, I
stopped by RT's blog and noticed a wanted sign looking for a volunteer
to help judge blogs and hand out awards. Not only did I see this as a
great opportunity to increase the sense of community amongst Spymac,
but I also wanted to be apart of a great cause started by my fellow
friend.
<div class="infobox">Do you have any pets?</div>
Two: a brother named Jake and a Doberman named Cricket.
<div class="infobox">Are you into any
games?</div>
Dance Dance Revolution. I'm quite obsessed with DDR actually; enough
to buy the dance mat and play DDR in my prom dress. I can play some
Maniac on the machine, but the majority of the time I play Standard.
My favorite songs are Nori, Nori, Nori, Burnin' the Floor, and Era.
<div class="infobox">Do you have any
hobbies?</div>
I have several hobbies including dancing, running, art, photography
and Spymac.
<div class="infobox">Have you made many friends
through Spymac?</div>
Although I dont have as many mutual friends as Iccy82, I do have quite
a few friends though Spymac. For me it's not about the quantity, it's
about the quality of the friendship.
<div class="infobox">What is your favourite
food?</div>
Living in Texas where the Mexican culture is dominate, I would have to
say Mexican food. Not only do I enjoy eating it, I enjoy cooking it as
well. My specialty is flautas.
<div class="infobox">Do you work or attend
school?</div>
I currently attend the University of Texas at San Antonio where I'm
majoring in art education and minoring in art history. This summer to
earn a few extra dollars for school, I worked as a lifeguard.
<div class="infobox">What's the secret urge you get
but refuse to act on?</div>
To dance in public. Being a dancer for so long, the rhythm is my
blood and sometimes I get the urge to let loose and dance my heart
out.
<div class="infobox">If you could be anywhere in the
world right now, where would you choose?</div>
Naples, Italy because my older brother, who is in the Navy, lives
there. It's almost been three years since I've seen my brother last
and I hate to say it, but I miss him.

<div class="infobox">What brought you to
Spymac?</div>
The recommendation of a friend on a MUSH, when I complained about my
distinct lack of email space with my current ISP. Ambrosia, as she's
known
on the MUSH (Multi-User-Shared-Hallucination), pointed out the large
GB
email account, and, as I'm a devoted mac user, pointed out the 'mac'
in the
web address.
<div class="infobox">Have you made many friends at
Spymac?</div>
I think so, if I haven't, then I'll convince myself that I have, as I
like
friends, I like to talk to them, help them, be the best friend I can
to
them.
<div class="infobox">Do you have any
hobbies?</div>
I do, mainly in computing, because, well, I was raised with computers
in my
life, staring with the ZX81, through the Spectrum, and Amstrad
PC2086D, then
became a PC-mad fan, spending time learning all I could about all
sorts of
technologies. So, if I had to pick a single hobby, I guess I'd pick
learning, learning all I can, while I can, for as long as I can,
whatever I
can. I'm a bookworm, you could say.
<div class="infobox">Do you have any pets?</div>
No, though I did once have a bunny when I was a tot, but, when it died
because of a viscious dog, I never again took a pet, their lives are
to
short, and the loss of them, once attached, is too painful for me.
That
said, if a dog was facing adoption, or destruction, I would ALWAYS
adopt the
pooch, regardless of whether I had the space, in order to give it a
good,
happy life.
<div class="infobox">Are you currently in
school?</div>
No, I work.
<div class="infobox">If you could only have one, a
cell phone or an iPod, which would you choose?</div>
Tough choice, but, since my current cell phone does it all,
practically, I
guess I'd pick my cell phone, I can always dump MP3 onto it, even
videos.
<div class="infobox">Where is your ideal vacation
destination?</div>
The north pole. As I said, I crave knowledge. So, I would go to the
north
pole to learn the true effects of mankind's mark on the world in which
we
live, to see it for myself.
<div class="infobox">What is your favourite
food?</div>
Being vegetarian, this is a hard choice, but I pick Bolognese. Made
with
something we brits know as 'Quorn' mince. Dunno if its the same name
in
other countries, but has to be made, not from a jar or packet.
<div class="infobox">What is the one urge you often
get but never act on?</div>
In the spirit of the questionnaire, and the decency of PG-13 content,
I
abstain from answering this one, sorry.
<div class="infobox">What kind of music are you
into?</div>
Ecclectic, I like nearly all music, with the near total exception of
anything made this century, it's all synthetic garbage. My favourite
artist
is Thomas Dolby.
<div class="infobox">How did you come up with your
Spymac member name?</div>
Simple, my name came about because of one deep dream I have, to be a
real,
honest to god, fairy.
<div class="infobox">Do you belong to any other online
communities?</div>
Not in the same essence that Spymac is. I belong to a lot of online
MU*
(short for Multi-User *Anything).
<div class="infobox">What is your favourite
season?</div>
Winter. Winter is beautiful, you get to see natures true beauty, the
fractals of the trees, the crispness of the air, the facinating shapes
of
the clouds...
<div class="infobox">How much time do you spend on
Spymac each day?</div>
When I first came here, quite a bit. Since getting my new job, not a
lot,
maybe a few hours a night?
<div class="infobox">What is your favourite

Bit of a coin-toss between Watership Down or Silent Running, I love

Microsoft's Million-Member March
Microsoft's Million-Member March
07/15/2004 11:58 AMMicrosoft Corp. today announced that more than 1 million people are
now members
of the worldwide Xbox Live online video gaming service. With
peak usage time
for Xbox Live between 7:30 and 9 p.m., this thrill-seeking throng is
showing that
they prefer to play TV.
As evidence of online gameplay's mass appeal and growing
importance in the digital
entertainment landscape, Xbox Live reached the million-member mark
three times faster
than other subscriber-based entertainment services such as Home Box
Office Inc.,
America Online Inc. and TiVo Inc.
Microsoft, which introduced the first broadly adapted online gaming
service in
November 2002 with the launch of Xbox Live, continues to expand the
appeal and adoption
of broadband. New Xbox Live feature introductions like video chat,
content downloads,
voice messages and alerts, coupled with highly anticipated games, have
fueled rapid uptake and catapulted online gaming into mainstream
entertainment.
Much has happened since the service was unveiled:
-
Players in 24 countries have spent more than 160 million hours (or
20,000 years)
playing Xbox Live.
-
Members are playing an average of 265,549 hours every day.
-
More than 100 game titles from a host of top publishers including
Electronic
Arts Inc., Microsoft Game Studios, THQ and Ubisoft
-
Entertainment are playable on Xbox Live, and the number is
expected to rise
to 150 by the end of the calendar year.
-
Players have logged more than 220 million online sessions, an
average of 10.5
million sessions per month.
-
More than 200 pieces of downloadable content are currently
available to expand
and enhance already great games, including new levels, new
characters, new multiplayer
modes and updated sports rosters.
-
The top 15 cities worldwide boasting the most Xbox Live members
are Tokyo; London;
Houston; Chicago; Toronto; San Diego; New York; Brooklyn, N.Y.;
Los Angeles;
Miami; Seattle; Calgary, Alberta, Canada; San Antonio; Las Vegas;
and Seoul,
Korea.
"Consumers are clearly choosing Xbox Live online video games
as the new digital
entertainment nirvana," said Microsoft Senior Vice President of
the Home and Entertainment
Division and Chief Xbox Officer Robbie Bach. "Our community has
reached a million
members in record time, and we've got hot new games and expanded
features that will
continue to feed our customer's almost insatiable appetite for
online play."
This fall, Xbox Live membership promises to grow even more as
several blockbuster
franchises hit the service. Electronic Arts Inc.'s lineup of
popular titles, including
"Madden Football 2005," "NCAA Football 2005" and
"FIFA Soccer 2005," will be Xbox
Live-enabled, as will "Halo® 2,"Microsoft Game Studios'
much-anticipated sequel
to the best-selling Xbox title of all time.
Also this fall, Xbox Live members can enjoy a selection of quick
and easy casual
games via a new feature called Xbox Live Arcade. Classic card, puzzle,
trivia, retro
and action arcade games from publishers such as Atari Corp. and Namco
Ltd. will
be featured in the Arcade, giving gamers yet another innovative way to
play together
online.
"Great game content has been and will continue to be the key
to the success of
Xbox Live," said Cameron Ferroni, general manager of Xbox Live.
"What really sets
the service apart from others is that we make it incredibly easy for
consumers to
get online, find their friends, join a game and start playing right
away; Xbox Live
is a great experience every time they play, regardless of what they
play."
Xbox Live is currently available in 24 countries: Australia,
Austria, Belgium,
Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy,
Japan, Korea,
Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland,
Taiwan, the
Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Bose Suspension System
Bose Suspension System
12/24/2004 12:57 PMThat's right. Bose.
The latest trick coming from the 74 year old Dr. Amar Bose is an
active suspension system; the Bose Suspension System. It's been in
development since 1980, and so far they've only got it on a 1994 Lexus
test mule, but rumor has it that Cadillac may offer the Bose system as
an option on an upcoming car.
The proprietary Bose suspension system couples linear
electromagnetic motors and power amplifiers with a set of unique
control algorithms. For the first time, it is possible to have, in the
same automobile, a much smoother ride than in any luxury sedan and
less roll and pitch than in any sports car. The Bose research vehicle
provides superior comfort by gliding smoothly over bumpy roads and
superior control by keeping the car body level during aggressive
maneuvers.
When you think about it, it's not that much of a stretch for an
outfit like Bose to go from speakers to automobile suspensions. A
speaker is essentially a linear motor that uses electromagnetism to
move a speaker coil to produce sound waves; the suspension Dr. Bose
has assembled uses four linear motors that basically use the same
principle to keep the car on an even keel, no matter how the driver
and road thrash the thing.
We've talked about the inherent problems of sophisticated
electronic systems in vehicles
before, and I don't think I'd want something like this in my
car... At least not until the technology has matured for several
years. Stories of Land Rover suspension systems failing at high speeds
and causing deadly accidents is enough to make me want to stick with
plain old shocks and struts.
The January print issue of Motor Trend has a brief article
on it, but a more extensive writeup online, complete with a video of the test mule in action. In the
grand finale, the Lexus actually jumps over a 2x6 on edge at 35mph!
Bose Personalized Amplification System
Bose Personalized Amplification System
02/11/2004 01:51 PMEver gone to a concert where it's so loud you think you're ears
will start bleeding, and in spite of the volume level you can't
understand the lyrics? Dr. Amar Bose and his namesake, Bose Corportation, are trying to change
all that, and change the entire amplified performance paradigm with
their new Personalized Amplification System
(PAS.)
Bose's approach to solving this problem is pretty radical,
and at the same time surprisingly simple. It involves nothing less
than, as they put it, “changing the fundamental properties of
loudspeakers,” and yet the idea, once it's explained, seems obvious.
The company's new product is called the Cylindrical Radiator
Loudspeaker. Two dozen or so (we weren't allowed to peek inside the
units) small drivers are arranged vertically in a flagpole-like
structure about 3.5 inches in diameter and seven feet high, which is
set into a floor stand. The arrangement of the drivers is designed to
eliminate all vertical dispersion: The sound is projected forward and
in a 180° arc horizontally, but there's nothing projecting above the
top of the column and nothing bouncing off the floor.
The most obvious effect is that, in theory at least, the sound is
transferred to the room much more efficiently than with a standard
spherical-front speaker. In fact, we were invited to walk directly
toward the speaker from across a large room while a guitarist played,
and observed that the difference in sound level as we approached was
remarkably small, even when we put our ears right up to the speaker.
Therefore, musicians can play at lower levels and still fill a space.
Vocals sent through the system can be loud enough to project, but the
potential for feedback is greatly reduced.
(quoted from a MixOnline
article)
The Cylindrical Radiator speaker is placed behind the
performer on the stage, providing sound for both the performer and the
audience. This is a total departure from the traditional amplified
sound system, which requires separate amplifiers & speakers for the
audience and the performers, a mixing console, miles of cabling, and a
sound technician to make it all work, and even then it often works
poorly. The PAS returns simplicity to the idea of amplified music
performances, and makes for a much more natural sound coming from the
stage, with the amplified sound from each performer coming from where
that performer is on the stage. According to many posters on Bose's online forum, the system is
also ideal for DJ's and playback of recorded music.
This is an answer to many prayers from frustrated performers and
sound techs alike, tired of overly complicated systems for small to
medium-sized rooms, not to mention concert-goers who feel the need to
bring ear plugs along.
Look for the PAS to show up on stage at a nightclub or church near
you.

12/30/2004 08:55 AMAt $300, the SoundDock is more expensive than competing systems.
However, it's currently the best sounding of the all-in-one speaker
systems we've tested, and its uncluttered elegance and ease of use
make it an appealing offering for those willing to plunk down the
change. By Dan Frakes, Macworld

JVC has a new
set of home theater systems out in Japan that transmit sound to the
read speakers wireless via radio; a radio that, unfortunately,
broadcasts on the 2.4GHz spectrum -- the same frequency as Wi-Fi. The
TH-SW5 otherwise looks like a solid system, but perhaps another model
at 5GHz or 900MHz would be optimal. Or maybe -- stay with me --
user selectable frequency. There aren't plans to release it
here, though, to my knowledge, but I'd hate to be the Japanese
consumer who has to choose between their network and their
speakers.
My dream wireless speakers receive audio and power through a
fixed microwave beam. If you couldn't navigate through the matrix of
flesh-searing invisible conduits, you wouldn't be worthy to
watch the extended edition of Groundhog Day.

Bose SoundDock for iPod
Bose SoundDock for iPod
09/27/2004 09:04 AM
There is a certain poetry when Apple and Bose team up in
offering the new SoundDock digital music system. It's basically yet
another dock with a pair of speakers attached to it, something we're
not in the least opposed to, but it does set one to wonder what
happens when blowhards like Bose work with blowhards like Apple to
"elevate your iPod listening to a whole new level."
Do both Reality Distortion Fields cancel each other out? Is it
possible this $300 set of speakers is actually a good product? I'm not
sure I'm man enough to find out.
