Open Source XML-RPC for Cocoa

Open Source XML-RPC for Cocoa 03/11/2003 09:44 AM
I posted a new open source XML-RPC implementation for Cocoa. It’s BSD licensed, which means you can use it in commercial apps and apps that aren’t themselves open source.

This code is, at this writing, just a little ahead of the code that’s in the current NetNewsWire beta. NetNewsWire’s weblog editor uses XML-RPC to communicate with Radio UserLand, Movable Type, Conversant, Blogger, and so on.

The code is in beta: it needs more testing and more documentation.

People will ask: why not use WebServicesCore? Here’s a quote from the Cocoa XML-RPC page:
At this writing (7 March 2003) the implementation of XML-RPC in Apple’s WebServicesCore has a crashing bug. Whenever a method response contains an empty element, there’s a crash.

We fully expect this (and other smaller bugs) to get fixed—but we couldn’t wait. (NetNewsWire’s weblog editor uses XML-RPC heavily; it’s how external editors work with weblogs.)

Using this XML-RPC code has other benefits: it’s Open Source, so you can see the code. As a set of Cocoa classes it’s easier to use than a C API, and you can create sub-classes.

About a month ago, Microsoft posted some of its source code to SourceForge. SourceForge is a, if not the, major distribution point for open source software. Microsoft's code was put there under the terms of the Common Public License, which allows modification, addition, redistribution - in short, it allows most of the rights and privileges that we associate with open source software.

Columnist: Open Source the Leaked Code

Columnist: Open Source the Leaked Code 02/15/2004 10:31 AM

Why Microsoft Should Open Source the Leaked Source: From the "never-gonna-happen" department, this guy says that Microsoft should just open-source the code that was leaked last week. He makes a good case, but there's no chance Bill would actually go for it.

Why not make lemonade out of lemons by doing the unthinkable: Redistribute the complete NT4 and Windows 2000 code base via either a fully OSS-certified or quasi-open-source license on the MSDN web site?

Sound crazy? Maybe. But think about the positive implications of a fully Microsoft-sanctioned complete release of this code...

If that happens, it will be because Cisco ignored one of the iron rules of network security -- and experts the world over will be muttering "if only IOS had been open source."

Back in January I mentioned Agitar Software in a column on software testing. The backstory was that Agitar got in touch with me after reading my review of Compuwar e's DevPartner Studio. I had used NLucene, the .NET port of the Java-based Lucene search engine, as a benchmark to explore that product's debugging and source-code analysis features. Agitar's development lead, Kent Mitchell, picked up on the idea. He fed Lucene's Java sources into his test automation tool, Agitator, and used Lucene to demonstrate his product. ...

Jaleco, a Gameboy Advance cartridge vendor, released a vintage game-pack that included a public-domain NES emulator written by Loopy. They didn't credit him in the release, and a lot of hackers and gamers were affronted on Loopy's behalf, but Loopy doesn't care. As Waxy says, "his message embodies the spirit of the open-source movement":
Let someone take an idea, do something cool with it, and not have to hesitate because of legal nitpickings. If a company can take something that I made, and turn it into a product that other people enjoy, I'm all the happier for it. Why should I care if someone else profits off of something I made? It's already free.

Demanding that someone pay homage to my work is just ego-stroking, and I'm not into that. Sure, as a courtesy it would have been nice for Jaleco to tell me "hey, thanks for the source", and they didn't, but I'm not going to lose sleep over it, because I didn't write PocketNES so people would pat me on the back.

I wrote it so people could have fun playing old games. And that's exactly what's happening here. Mission accomplished.

I'm with him. After all, this guy used the holes in copyright to make an emulator that relied on Nintendo's (and its suppliers') IP. Li nk (Thanks, Zed!)

Free software and Open Source: The freedom Debate and Its Consequences By Mathias Klang
ht tp://www.firstmonday.org/issues/issue10_3/klang/index.html

Abstract:
To most outsiders the ethics of software is not something usually considered. To most proficient computer users with a passing interest in this question the ethics of software is recognised as one of the fundamental questions in the digital rights area. To most of the latter, terms such as free software, open source, and their derivatives (FLOSS, FOSS, Software Freedom) are interchangeable. Choosing one over the other is a matter of taste rather than politics. However, to most insiders the
question is not one of taste. There is a fundamental difference between the two areas even if they share a similar root. Free software is not the same as open source. The two groups differ in their fundamental philosophical approach to software and its importance to society as a whole. This paper examines the two groups’ differing philosophies and explores how their actions have affected software development, access to fundamental software infrastructure, and the development of the concept of freedom.
