Going Ape over RoboSapien
Going Ape over RoboSapien
12/02/2003 12:24 AMTaiwan News has an article about RoboSapien being a
humanoid robot that dishes out kung fu moves. Mark Tilton, aka
BEAM
religious leader, and hyped as a Nasa scientist (you either like him
or hate him),
is helping Wow Wee
toys create the
RoboSapien which will be coming soon to stores at around $100
each. RoboSapien
is build on the BEAM concept like their previous toy BIO Bugs
(popular a couple a years ago), but instead of a bug it is sort of
like a
fast lumbering ape. It walks like a ape, it growls like an ape, it
even
passes gas like
an ape. It can dance and do kung fu. I"m sure kids will go ape over
this thing.

The new Robosapien V2 looks fantastic. For just 200
bucks, the new bot will be able track objects and movements, recognize
objects and skin tones—all sorts of crazy stuff. Onrobo
(another one of the new robot blogs, a trend I think is great) has
details, as well as this first picture. Oh, and they have information
about Roboraptor
and Robopet, which the new V2 Robosapien can control (although
they can be operated independently).

Having made many of the "must have" lists for Xmas 2004,
WowWee is introducing follow ups to their breakout product, the
Robosapien. A new 7-inch Mini Robosapien is the first to be shown,
shipping in February for just $10. More robots will be shown at CES
this week, including a new 'Robosapien V2,' a 'Roboraptor,' and a
'Robopet.'

Could it be that Sharper Image actually has something
marginally cool? Incomprehensible as that may be, it appears that the
technoshlock vendor is selling special edition "Signature Series"
RoboSapiens, available in both Chrome and Blue, with designer Mark
Tilden's autograph.
I realized as I started to write this that I had missed my little
brother's seventh birthday. Nate, if you're reading this, remember
that your brother doesn't hate you, he just, uhm, was waiting for the
chrome one to come out. Actually, your brother just calculated
shipping at Sharper Image, and you're getting a white one from someone
else, because with shipping prices like that they can blow him. This
is the brutal world of finance I am teaching you about!

08/18/2004 04:15 PMSeveral interesting Robosapien items
have been submitted lately. From Gizmodo comes news of a giant
Robosapien outside the Macy's department store in New York. Also,
zodiak has written an article
on the Robosapien's internals that includes lots of very clear
photos. That sort of information will come in handy if you plan on
entering the SERVO
Magazine Hack-A-Sapien contest. Also some DPRG members dissected a
Robosapien at a recent RBNO. If you haven't got
a Robosapien
yet, they're still available from Amazon.com
at a discount. Links to more photos and video of the
Robosapien are available in a previous robots.net article.

Gadget Madness has completed an arduous multi-week
"experience" with the RoboSapien that has ended (as many love affairs
do) with a music video. See the white robot ape chase away pigeons,
bask in the plastic-crackling sun, and co-opt the culture of black
robots - sort of a mechsploitation film, really. They've also
got a really nice collection of links at the end of their review for
those interested in hacking their RoboSapien to do even more than it
does out of the box.

GadgetMadness confirms the release date of WowWee's next set
of Robots and I have to say I'm disappointed. While I'm not looking
forward to paying $200 for a Robosapien V2, I'm most certainly not
looking forward to waiting until December before I can get my hands on
one. The RoboRaptor [pictured] will launch for $100 in August, which
might sooth me, although I may wait to go cheap in October and get one
of the ambiguously named Robotpets for $70 instead. Or I'll do what I
did with the first Robosapien and get one for my brother, then steal
it from him when I go home for the holidays.

A quick roundup of items related to the tsunami disaster. Image:

story. (

*Following up on a previous BoingBoing post, an anonymous Microsoft
employee says:
Responding to this: "Reader J. Hahn says, "I am particularly impressed
with Amazon.com's Red Cross donation counter that proves Americans are
not 'stingy.' Also, as a Mac user, I was proud to go to the apple.com
site and see not one product ad on their front page - just links to
aid and donation sites, and Microsoft had not one mention of the
disaster."
Most of Microsoft's efforts regarding Tsunami relief is focused
internally. MS offers a dollar for dollar charitable donation match to
all FTE, and is doing everything it can to expidite the process of
trying to get the money to where it will do the most good.
* Tsunami Outreach: Bloggers Without Borders' first international
project launched last night. Link
(Thanks, Sean)
* BoingBoing reader Nicholas
Bentley says,
"Hello Xeni, We thought you might be interested in passing
on the news of one person's great efforts for tsunami relief. We
wanted to donate to a tsunami relief effort with our funds in a PayPal
account but had difficulty finding an agency that took PayPal.
Eventually we found Kevin McDonald's site where he is
doing a fantastic job of collecting PayPal contributions and passing
them on to AmeriCares
(AmeriCares disaster relief has a 4-star rating from Charity
Navigator.) Kevin has even persuaded AmeriCare's webmaster to see
about accepting PayPal transfers direct in the near future."
*BoingBoing reader Chris Cummer says,
Family members of a close personal friend of mine are still missing in
Thailand. Her father and brother have flown there to try and find
them, as this Globe and
Mail article details, but the help of the blog community would
also be greatly appreciated. I've posted a request for help on my
blog at Mi
ssing in Khao Lak, Thailand. Hopefully someone might have some
information for a Canadian family that's been living on the edge of
grief for five days now.
Related: see this "missing persons" wiki page (
Link
), and a blog devoted to linking missing persons with their loved
ones:
Link. And the
Red Cross has launched a "Family Links" web page where family members
can search for missing relatives’ names:
Link. "The information is
not verified or tracked by either the ICRC or the American Red Cross
but is offered by the ICRC as a stand-alone internet tool for
inquirers to use on their own."
* Reader Roberto says, "Every year at this time, I empty my jar full
of loose change. But this year I discovered I could donate to the Red
Cross (among other charities including UNICEF) from a Coinstar machine
at my drugstore. And big kid that I am, I had fun playing with the
machine." Link.
* Reader Chris Holland
says,
I stumbled upon Austin's Blog who's
done a fine job of gathering more videos. So earthlink homepage
servers don't get creamed, I've created this torrent gathering 5 of
the videos from his blog that weren't already covered in the previous
torrent which is still available here. Remember,
the more people click those torrent links, the easier and faster it is
for everybody else to download them too. And try to keep the torrent
opened for as long as possible even after you're done downloading. Big
Kudos to prodigem's very
easy-to-use torrent service. Link
* Andy Carvin says,
I've just set up a tsunami news digest
using the news aggregator Kinja.com. The page contains latest news
feeds and first-person blogs related to the tsunami disaster from
around the globe. I'd like to see others add their own tsunami-related
feeds to the site. If you have a news feed or blog that's focusing on
the tsunami, or are reading one that you'd like to add to the digest,
please visit the
website and log on with the following info: login: tsunami-info /
password: southasia. Once you've logged in, you can add a news source
to the digest by pasting it into the "Add a Favorite" form field in
the right column. Or, you can follow this shortcut.
* Among the many first-person accounts appearing on blogs: Sanjiva is
an IBM employee from Sri Lanka, who is trying to build information
systems to aid in locating missing persons, and help with medical
resource logistics.
Link.
* Jesse Krembs, President of The Hacker Foundation, tells BoingBoing:
Some of the folks here at the hacker foundation are assembling some
code to build a big PHP/MYSQL database for locating survivors and
doing tracing. It's not up yet but it will be soon. SurvivorLocationAssis
tance.org & suvivors.hackerfoundation.
org will be the address. You can see a preview as we build it here. It's
still very rough but functional even at very low
bandwidth."

Sony's HMP-A1 VAIO Video Pocket Video
Review
Sony's HMP-A1 VAIO Video Pocket Video
Review
06/16/2004 07:12 AM
Portable Media World (a spanking new sister site to our favorite
French gadget site, Akihabara News) has a review of the HMP-A1, the
second-generation video player from Sony. They're impressed by its
fit-and-finish, but it's clear from the review that Sony has crippled
the device, forcing the user to go through two different programs to
copy audio and video to the unit (and no ATRAC, hilariously), as well
as reencode most video before transferring it over (it supports MPEG
1/2/4 but not MPEG4 derivatives like DivX or XviD, apparently).
Battery life varies wildly depending on how much decoding the HMP-A1
must do, but even when gnawing on the relatively dense MPEG2 files it
manages around a 4 hour playback -- couple of movies worth, which is
decent. Left-handed users get an unfulfilled tease, as the HMP-A1
supports a screen pivot for lefty use, but doesn't switch the
directions of the controls, meaning scrolling down, for instance, will
cause the HMP-A1 to scroll up.
It looks nice, but considering the major market for these units --
we geeks who rip our own DVDs, record TV, and download video
(illegally) -- it's probably better to wait for one of the iRiver or
Archos players that don't do annoying things like hide the directories
on the hard drive.
