Thanks goes out to Julian Bond for cluing me in on Drupal - a long time ago.

Content Management Systems for alternative media.

I'm looking into systems to set up an alternative media website.

Here are a few that I found today:

The independent media center uses Mir as an Open-Source content managment system.

The Boston Indymedia Center runs on dadalMC.

dadaIMC also sports a new "license" section, allowing the author to specify a distribution license, selecting from public domain, standard copyright, or one of the Creative Commons licenses.

The Wes Clark Community Network used Scoop. Here's an interesting one, publicaccesstv.net.

H ey look, demand media runs on Scoop too!

Choice SxSW quotes

Choice SxSW quotes 03/19/2005 02:35 AM

My American adventure is ongoing; I'm still in Austin at the moment, but I'll be off to Washington D.C. in a few days and there's a small chance I'll get there via Dallas. This doesn't leave much opportunity for online shenanigans, but there were a few things from SxSW that really needed a mention. The conference, as ever, was awesome - if not for the panels then certainly for the socialising. If anything I stretched myself too thin this year trying to keep up with the Brit Pack, the WaSP crew, some ex-colleagues from Lawrence and the people I met in San Francisco back in May.

I met a lot of new people this year as well. Since David Nunez had pointed out that "what do you do?" was a bit of a dull opening question (not to mention a conversation killer for people who dislike their job) I stuck with "So what are you excited about?" instead. It worked pretty well - I got a whole bunch of great answers, with the most random probably coming from the guy who was excited about mopeds (it turned out he runs the world's number one moped site).

The most entertaining panel by far was the Home Star Runner one, in which the Brothers Chaps finally revealed the secret to their animation success: motion capture! I'll have to post a few pictures once I get back on a high speed 'net connection; suffice to say the constant laughter from the room was heard throughout the convention center.

Anyway, on to the quotes. The first two are from Jacob Kaplan-Moss:

PHP is like a beautiful woman... with syphilis

Maintaining badly written code is like trying to solve a crossword puzzle set by someone who can't spell

I also like this one from Jeremy Dunck, who was justifying sharing your ideas with people at the conference despite the risk of other people implementing them first:

It's like the lazyweb in meatspace

The credit for the last one goes (I think) to Yvonne Adams, who made the sage observation that:

South by South West is spring break for web geeks

It certainly is. See you all again next year!

Depressed over Daisy

Depressed over Daisy 06/22/2005 02:54 AM
You know, seeing open source projects like Daisy make me just want to stop JSPWiki development altogether. It's simply just too good, and I feel like there's no way I can compete.

Daisy will be a winner.

Update and a bit of soul-searching:

Heh. Thanks for your kind words, Steven. FWIW, I'm not quitting JSPWiki development, but frankly, I was in awe while looking at what Daisy has accomplished. It really fills a gap that has been in the software space, and it has learned quite a few lessons from Wikis.

The thing is, Daisy being Java makes it far more interesting to corporations. Individuals prefer to deploy PHP or other light-weight apps that can be easily installed on web hotels, and so far the JSPWiki niche has been in corporate intranet deployments. Something like Daisy will surely eat into that niche, and it makes me think if I should refocus my attentions elsewhere. Find perhaps a new focus for JSPWiki, or something.

The other thing is that I have quite a lot of ideas I would like to put into reality. JSPWiki's code base is (still) pretty healthy, and there's much life still in it - in fact it seems that jspwiki.org is finally running on its own without my constant watch. There are some professional developers contributing very good quality code, and many people seem to like the whole project. But since nobody is paying me to work on it (any volunteers? :), I am using something like two hours a day on it. Which amounts to quite a lot of work over the years, but I still know that I can't match the power of professionally employed developers working 8/5 on an OSS project. And that sort of makes me sad, because I would like to match the quality - to have an even race, so to speak.

It's kinda like seeing your neighbour buy a new, powerful Ferrari, while you still drive an old, crumbling Fiesta because you don't have any money. You kinda feel happy for him, but you also feel jealous. You kinda want to deride him for it, and want to say mean things, but at your heart you still know that you would do the exact same thing if you could.

Daisy's really good. I'm just a bit jealous at the people who get to work on something like that full-time. In my current dayjob I get to do little hands-on stuff. I mean, it's interesting in every possible way, and I like many things about it, and the people I work with are some of the smartest people I've ever met, and I would have the opportunity to drive many things, but still I find that my heart is not completely into it.

After all, I'm a tinkerer at heart. I get delight on the beauty of code; I enjoy the feeling of making things 'click'. I like to simplify things so that other people find use in them - maybe because that solicits feedback. The beauty of open source for me is that you can't hide anything: when you put it out there, people will see it for what it is really worth. It's like a painting, or sculpture: it's naked and visible for anyone to see and judge - you don't hide parts of it under a blanket and just show the good bits. And getting positive feedback on something like that is one of the few things that can really make my heart tick.

Fix Web Multimedia

Fix Web Multimedia 06/24/2004 04:40 PM

Lucas Gonze:

What I am thinking is that we need a tech social movement to fix web multimedia by insisting that web standards be followed. REST was such a movement in the protocol space. The Zeldman-inspired movement to use structural HTML and CSS only did the same thing with design. This would be a direct analog for multimedia. Use real URLs that are not hidden behind javascript. Use correct mime types -- no making them up because you don't have time to look up the answer. Use standard data formats -- no proprietary types. Use correctly formatted playlists -- if you have a ram playlist, the extension must be .ram rather than .rm.

Well said. Creative Commons likes multimedia and believes in building on standards. The web will benefit from this movement. Those interested in building a commons will benefit in particular. Trivial example: It can be a big pain to share and reuse content mediated by a maze of javascript. If you want your content to be shared and built upon, do license it, then follow Gonze's advice. One way to do this is to take advantage of the Internet Archive's ability to host Creative Commons licensed audio and video content.

Viral Multimedia

Viral Multimedia 08/07/2004 01:46 PM

News.com is reporting that six critical vulnerabilities were found in libpng, a widely used library for displaying images in PNG format.  Note that libpng is open source yet no one noticed those vulnerabilities until now.  In my opinion, libpng being free and open source actually contributed to the scalability of attacks that could be launched through those vulnerabilities.

Even more disturbing is that, while patches for vulnerabilities found in end products like IE and Mozilla are quickly and widely distributed, patches for vulnerabilities in libraries often never make it to the end products that use the faulty versions of the libraries for various reasons.

How would you know if any of the infrequently used programs and utilities you have in your computer use vulnerable versions of popular libraries like libpng?  You don't.  Your only protection is that there are easier targets.  Unfortunately, vulnerabilities in multimedia software is starting to look more attractive for hackers.

Most likely avenue of viral multimedia attack is using porn to drive wide distribution of video codecs (compression/decompression) software. They don't have to carry trojans either. All they need are a handful of intentional defects for them to use as a wedge later. They can even release the software as open source since the chance of being discovered before harvest time is rather low.

Consider this a sort of social engineering attack against the little head.
