Planning a trip to Guanajuato, Mexico

Planning a trip to Guanajuato, Mexico

Planning a trip to Guanajuato, Mexico 03/06/2004 01:59 AM

The wife and I, along with several friends, are planning a trip to Guanajuato, Mexico soon.

We're planning this trip for two reasons: 1) We need a vacation and 2) We're seriously thinking of moving to Mexico in the coming years. I'll not go into too much detail about reason #2, but will say only this: The 'rat-race' is getting tiring, and in Mexico they may be poor, but they're generally happy.

We're looking at Guanajuato as a place to get away to at the least because it's a great old college town in the central part of Mexico. I've heard it referred to as one of those 'un-discovered gems'.

Some of this pages I've found on the net are useful, but others are horrible at actually telling me anything about the town/region. And finding a page about the hotels in the city is just about impossible with Google... I ended up using Frommer's to find most of the hotel information I could find, but even Frommer's is horrible at giving more than cursory information. Heck, maybe I'll start an internet tourism site just for Guanajuato some-day...

Anyways, here's a few pieces I'd recommend people read if they're looking to visit Guanajuato. Feel free to add your links in the comments:

Hotel Posada Santa Fe
Guanajuato Real Estate - useful in case reason #2 becomes a reality.
Official Government site
Photos from McNolo
Weather Underground Guanajuato Forcast
A good page on geocities about Guanajuato.
Google Guanajuato State Directory page
Map of Guanajuato from Frommers

Briefest of updates:

  • Last night: had lunch with Erik and Tim, before saying goodbye to Erik and wandering down to the Derb y with Tim for drinking and band-watching and to chat to Alex who works there...
  • Today: lounging around, lunch with Sean, hopefully some kind of big gay drinking this evening in West Hollywood where I will (no doubt) look like a beach whale next to all the local gym bunnies
  • Tomorrow: hopefully joining Jen from Blackphoebe to drive up to San Francisco for the SixAp art Mixer, and staying with the lovely Leslie Harpold. Terribly exciting.
  • Friday - dunno.
  • Booze-up with geeks at Tonga Room! Nice!
  • Sunday - Wednesday... Er... Dunno

Microsoft and New Mexico Plaintiffs
Settle New Mexico Class Action Lawsuit
08/05/2004 03:28 AM
The law firms of Hinkle, Hensley, Shanor, & Martin, L.L.P., Lerach, Coughlin, Stoia, & Robbins, L.L.P., and Freedman, Boyd, Daniels, & Hollander, L.L.P. counsel for a proposed class of New Mexico consumers, and Microsoft Corp. jointly announced today that a settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit alleging that Microsoft Corp. violated New Mexico’s antitrust and unfair competition laws. The settlement, which received preliminary approval on July 29, 2004 from the First Judicial District Court for the State of New Mexico, will make vouchers available to class members that may be used to buy any manufacturer's desktop, laptop and tablet computers; any software available for sale to the general public and used with those computer products; and specified peripheral devices for use with computers. The total amount of vouchers issued will depend on the number of class members who claim vouchers, and the maximum value of the vouchers that may be issued to class members will be $31.5 million.

Things that I have seen in Mexico so far

Things that I have seen in Mexico so far 12/17/2004 06:36 PM

Here are some random things that I have observed so far on this trip to Mexico:

  • eight Mexicans speaking English to each other all night at a dinner party so that their one American guest (me) would not feel left out
  • a family gathered around the grave of a loved one offering me a drink of whiskey
  • families staying up all night with musicians and refreshments
  • two Japanese tourists, complete with nametags and three cameras, marching in Santa Maria del Tule's "Parade of Death"
  • three tall white Americans dressed by REI and bedizened with cameras in a small village's graveyard saying "we're not tourists, we're photographers"
  • tens of thousands of flowers for sale in an open-air market with upbeat Latin music playing
  • enormous banners hanging from the sides of churches and cathedrals arguing against the legalization of abortion (abortion is currently illegal in Mexico but if you have USD$3000 you can get breast augmentation, laser hair removal, Viagra ("30% off" according to the big signs in Oaxacan pharmacies), and a procedure in a discreet private clinic)
  • Spanish-speakers cringing in pain when I pronounce Oaxaca "Oh-axe-a-ka" (to be consistent with the English pronunciation of a hard "ex" in "Mexico")
  • multi-acre downtown cactus garden from the balcony of one of the world's best prehispanic art museums
  • a brass band playing and costumed locals dancing for hours underneath the balcony next to my restaurant table on the main square in Oaxaca

In addition to seeing a lot of interesting and fun things I found a good job to apply for once I get my commercial helicopter rating.  It seems that on the north shores of the Hawaiian islands there are surfers who pay to be dropped from a helicopter into the middle of a swell.  From there they get onto a jetski and are towed to the top of the 18-24 foot waves that are typical in the Hawaiian winter.  One would need an endorsement to be legal to carry surfboards externally strapped to the helicopter skids but otherwise it didn't sound too challenging and you'd be meeting cool people all day.

Some pictures from Mexico City

Some pictures from Mexico City 01/07/2004 04:22 PM

http: //www.photo.net/philg/digiphotos/200311-mexico-city/ contains some snapshots from the recent trip to Mexico City.  I'm trying to travel light these days, which means no laptop and no camera.  For this trip I borrowed a Casio Exilim EX-Z3, a truly tiny 3 MP camera.  As you can see the results are fairly dismal.  I attribute the poor results to the lack of a decent viewfinder in point and shoot cameras.  You can't see what you're photographing.  The little viewfinder window is tiny on the Casio and highly inaccurate.  You don't know whether or not the camera has focussed properly.  Plus of course there are a lot of weird modes in which you can get the camera.

On the plus side the Casio is only about the size of a Palm organizer and barely heavier so you truly can take it with you everywhere.  I don't think I'll buy one, though.  The smallest Canons are larger but seem less compromised as photographic machines.

Road Trip USA. This simply titled site is one of the better travel sites I have seen for back-road ramblings around the USA. Not only are the routes described some of the best, the writing is extensive (at least book length), of high quality and obviously by someone who has traveled every single mile personally. I only wish I had it on my last trip. Recommended for the arm-chair or car-seat traveler alike.

$10 raffle for a trip to Zero G

$10 raffle for a trip to Zero G 04/05/2005 04:48 PM
Xeni Jardin: Yuri's Night founder, recently minted 3D science movie star, and astrobiologist Loretta Hidalgo tells Boing Boing:
The industrious kids at MIT are raffling off a trip to Ft Lauderdale to ride Zero-G's 727 microgravity jet. The organizer is a member of Zero G Corp.'s flight crew. Everyone always tells him they wish they could fly in zero gravity, too -- so he created a raffle so that one of them could!

Included in the prize: airfare (based on a R/T to the takeoff site in Ft. Lauderdale on Song airlines from Boston), and hotel. The raffle is need-not-be-present-to-win so anyone in the US can enter. Drawing will held on Saturday April 9th [extended] on April 16th. The organizer is Stephen Steiner, an MIT Grad Student in Material Science and an Aerogel genius. He can be reached at ssteiner [at] transuranium.com.

Link to raffle details.
