Five identity management issues facing
large enterprises
03/06/2004 01:59 AM

OctetString's Phil Hunt (whose name does pop up here from time to time) has written a new and, I think, quite interesting white paper called "Supporting Large-scale Deployments through Virtual Directory Technology." Not a catchy or snappy title, but it does tell you what the paper is about.

This is a GrokNews Entry: (what is grok?)

Leading Identity Management Vendors Join
Microsoft to Demonstrate Federated
Identity Using Web Services
05/25/2004 11:30 PM
Microsoft Corp., together with six of the industry's leading identity management vendors, today previewed interoperable federated identity management solutions based on the Web services architecture (WS-*). Software companies IBM Corp., Netegrity Inc., Oblix Inc., OpenNetwork Technologies, Ping Identity Corp., RSA Security Inc. and Microsoft have successfully concluded work demonstrating how their identity management technologies interoperate using the Web Services Federation (WS-Federation) specification, part of the WS Security set of specifications. In his Tech•Ed keynote address today, Andrew Lees, corporate vice president for Server and Tools Marketing at Microsoft, showed how federated identity management based on WS-Federation and the WS-* architecture will simplify the work of IT professionals as they seek to cut the cost and complexity of passing identity credentials across security and organization boundaries in a Web services environment.

Legal Issues Facing Spam, Popups And
Spyware

Legal Issues Facing Spam, Popups And
Spyware
01/03/2005 06:04 AM
It appears that politicians are increasingly paying attention to internet "evils" along the lines of spyware, spam and popups. In all cases, these are instances where the openness of the network has been abused, creating certain problems. However, it's not clear that any of these legislative solutions are likely to do any good. We already pointed out how ineffec tive CAN SPAM has been, but a few interesting things happened over the weekend in the areas of popups and spyware. First, a Utah court ruled that pop up ads were not covered by an anti-spam law in that state. The law in question is no longer in effect, so it doesn't really matter -- but it does suggest that the idea of using "unsolicited" email legislation against other forms of "unsolicited" advertising is unlikely to get very far. The news that's getting the most attention, however, is California's decision to pass anti-spyware legislation that would give out fines for spyware purveyors. The text of the actual law is worth reading, as it's clear that a fair amount of thought went into it. However, it's not entirely clear it will do much to stop spyware. First, the sneakiest forms of spyware have been very careful to hide who is really responsible for the products -- meaning, they're likely to successfully remain hidden from any lawsuits. The just slightly more legitimate adware variant of spyware, on the other hand, has always been more about social engineering than any technical trickery. That is, they bury the permissions in a ton of language so that no one is really sure what they're agreeing to. Assuming this continues, these firms will be able to claim that they presented the end user with a choice, and those end users agreed to move ahead with the installation.

I was in Boston last week for Courion's third annual Converge conference. This is best described as an annual user group meeting with lots of others in attendance. Customers and potential customers, partners and potential partners and a smattering of press and analysts, including Burton Group's Mike Neuenschwander, Gartner's Earl Perkins, and Digital ID World's Phil Becker, all got together to hold conversations on provisioning, compliance, passwords/authentication and other identity management topics.

The old year has passed and a new one has dawned. Yet, we can never really discard the old year (as we can throw away the calendar) because its legacy lives on into the New Year. Still, each new year brings hope for a better life and to mark this hope we make New Year's resolutions - vows to better ourselves in some way. Last January, I offered three possible resolutions for the identity management industry - let's take a look at how well they were kept.

Musicians Making Lots Of Money, Money,

09/03/2004 02:40 PM
Jeremiah writes "Amidst the public ballyhoo about how rampant P2P piracy is costing the music business its very life (gasp! NO!), BMI announced it collected a record level of revenue and royalty payout to its artist members. From their press release: "BMI has reported revenues of $673 million for the 2004 fiscal year, an increase of nearly $43 million, 6.8% over the prior year. Royalties of more than $573 million were distributed to our songwriters, composers and music publishers, an increase of $40 million or 7.5% from the previous year, and the most ever paid by an American PRO." Another interesting tidbit: "During the period 1995-2004, BMI had an average annual revenue growth rate of 9%..." If I read this right, BMI has been reporting solid growth over the last nine years, which makes me question the industry's claims about P2P. Either P2P ate into their growth (not mentioned), they found a way to cope with it (plausible), or it may actually help music sales. Whatever. Reminds me a bit of a spec I did for a life-insurance company's radio ad: Money , Money, Money (mp3 file)."

The Royal Bank of Canada is still trying to sort out the mess from last week when their computer "upgrade" appears to have stopped processing transactions, meaning that money that should have gone into accounts (especially direct deposit payroll checks) never showed up. The bank won't explain exactly what went wrong, though they admit that's because everyone who understands it has been busy working on the fix. Still, this does make you pause and wonder about how much we rely on computer systems to function properly to go about our daily lives.

Marking the largest development effort for Microsoft(R) Money since the personal finance software was launched 13 years ago, Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) today announced Microsoft Money 2005 Premium, Deluxe, Standard and Small Business. Completely rebuilt to simplify daily financial tasks, Money 2005 is designed to answer the growing number of consumer requests for a simple solution that addresses the three primary areas of financial concern: tracking account balances, monitoring spending and paying bills. Consumers today have less time than ever to spend managing their finances, which has contributed to the number of American households banking online -- due to its convenience and efficiency -- reaching nearly 33 million.(1) Money 2005 builds on this trend by helping people access all their accounts in one place and providing automated tools that reduce or eliminate the manual entry required by traditional personal finance software.

Web hosting costs money per gigabyte. Internet access costs money per megabit. Internet providers pay per sustained megabit to their providers, who do the same. So, I pay money to my ISP, who pays their upstream provider, who pays theirs and so on. Then I pay for my website and their pay their provider who pays theirs and so on.

Who is "and so on"? Who has all my money? Who the hell is making out like a bandit on all this stuff?
