Logins Made with ASP.NET

Logins Made with ASP.NET

Logins Made with ASP.NET 03/06/2004 01:58 AM

Login forms are the single most widely used method of identifying a user and to retrieve specific data for them in dynamic applications. The object of this article is to explore how a simple login system would be created using Asp.net with Vb.net. By Nick Waters. 0304

HTTPS logins in Roller 1.0

HTTPS logins in Roller 1.0 02/05/2005 10:07 PM

I just wrote up some instructions for configuring Secure Logins for Roller 1.0.

I had to make one minor change in Roller 1.0's Secure Login feature. I found that, when Roller is running behind a web switch, I can't rely on request.isSecure() to tell me if I have an HTTPS connection. I had to add an (optional) request header test. In my case, I have to test for a header named X-SSL to determine if HTTPS is active.

Double Authenticated Logins a smart move
by AOL
09/21/2004 05:12 AM

In a move that will prove popular to those worried about identity theft or simply keeping their accounts secure AOL has introduced a dual authentication login.

"Subscribers get a matchbook-size device from RSA Security Inc. displaying a six-digit code that changes every minute. The code is necessary to log on, so a scammer who guesses or steals a password cannot access the account without the device in hand."

I have seen these things in action before and wish my bank and some of the services I access on the net had the added security feature. I would happily pay the monthly surcharge. [Goupstate.com]

Latest Pointless Patent: Redirect Page

Latest Pointless Patent: Redirect Page
For WiFi Logins
01/27/2004 02:24 AM
Wouldn't it be nice if we could go just one week without hearing about yet another ridiculous patent? These days, that seems to be wishful thinking. The latest, dug up by the always excellent WiFi Networking News is the fact that someone has actually gone and patented the concept of using a redirect to force you to a login page when you connect to a WiFi network. How is this possibly patentable? It seems like an insanely obvious idea - and one that plenty of companies use because it's obvious - and not because they ripped off someone's "intellectual property". The point of the patent system is to encourage innovation. The point of this patent (like so many others we've been hearing about recently) is to hold companies hostage for doing something obvious.

Microsoft's Service Pack 2 Says Existing

Microsoft's Service Pack 2 Says Existing
Hotspot Logins Insecure
08/06/2004 08:26 PM
Microsoft's Windows XP Service Pack 2 will be available soon, but they've got a little tweaking to do on their technical documentation: This page explains to developers how Wireless Provisioning Service (WPS) works. Never mind the fact that Service Set Identifier (SSID) is described as the Secure Set Identifier. More importantly, they overstate the current risk level for gateway-page logins at hotspots, a problem that WPS bypasses (with all Microsoft server and client components): The current connection model for WISP signup and use is not secured. Most Wi-Fi hotspots are configured for open authentication and without data encryption. Users are generally required to launch a Web browser to initially sign up to the WISP service and for subsequent logins. WSP mitigates this threat by adding encryption and authentication to the communications between the client and the wireless network. No, Mr. Gates, no, no, no. All authentication gateway pages I've visited are SSL-based, meaning that encryption (but not authentication) is already in the transaction. I don't know where they got the most from. The SSL certificate has to be signed by an approved certificate authority, or a client's Web server would balk, and I haven't seen that kind of self-signed certificate problem that would allow man-in-the-middle attacks. (That is, if you were expecting to be warned about a self-signed certificate, then you might accept even a fake AP's certificate. But if you weren't expecting it, you probably wouldn't accept it.) Browser based deployment is vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks, for example, by a malicious front-end server using a rogue access point. Users queried by this access point might unknowingly be giving away personal identification and credit card information. By eliminating the need for a Web login WSP reduces the vulnerability of WISP users to this type of attack. This is definitely one of the coolest authentication elements of WPS. The transaction between XP SP2's WPS client and a WPS-equipped hotspot involves quite a lot of quasi-out-of-band confirmation. For instance, an SSL tunnel that's opened in one stage of the authentication is signed by a certificate authority already authorized in the WPS client. (So what's good for the goose should be good for the gander, above, in terms of Microsoft's characterization of hotspot authentication weakness currently.) Without additional hotspot client software users can not easily detect hotspots and do not have a unified mechanism to sign up to them. It is not easy...

Immigration has made us fat

Immigration has made us fat 01/16/2004 01:01 PM

Continuing the theme of immigration... we can blame immigrants for making us the fattest country on the planet.

Personal observation:  Nearly every time I visit a foreign country for any length of time, I lose weight.  I lost 5 lbs. on a recent trip to Argentina, a country in which food is available almost any time of day for ridiculously low prices.

Why does one lose weight in a foreign country?  Most countries, especially in their smaller towns, only offer one type of food.  Argentine restaurants tend to offer grilled meat, steamed vegetables, potatoes of various sorts, and salad with oil and vinegar.  The menu will tend to list the ingredients by name and what you order is pretty much what you get with no extra sauces or spices.  You might have a delicious steak sandwich with cheese, lettuce, and tomato for lunch.  If you're not really hungry at dinner time you don't bother ordering a lot of food because the only choices are things that you had at lunch or maybe the day before.

Japan is a country with a high culinary reputation.  Yet after being there for a few days you can understand why McDonald's and Italian restaurants are so popular.  The thought of "Japanese food yet again" is not very appealing and yet you'll probably end up in a Japanese restaurant.  So you order a modest amount of food and devote your attention to the conversation rather than stuffing your face.

Contrast this with life in an American city.  You're with friends and propose going to a Chinese restaurant.  They say "No, we had Chinese food last night."  You eventually agree on Indian food, which nobody has had for awhile.  Delighted with the novelty of all the tastes you order one or two more dishes than your group would require merely to sustain life for another day or two.  The next day you have Mexican food for lunch and go to a Greek restaurant for dinner.  Because of immigration we always have the opportunity to open our mouths to alleviate boredom rather than hunger.

(This ties back to the August 25, 2003 posting "Lose weight by eating every meal at McDonald's".)

Conducting "secure" financial

isn't safe

Conducting "secure" financial
transactions with Internet Explorer
isn't safe
07/06/2004 04:50 AM
The latest exploit is a file called "img1big.gif" that decompresses into a malevolent Browser Helper Object (BHO) that captures your financial transactions. According to a report from SANS, this BHO: watches for HTTPS (secure) access to URLs of several dozen banking and financial sites in multiple countries. When an outbound HTTPS connection is made to such a URL, the BHO then grabs any outbound POST/GET data from within IE before it is encrypted by SSL. When it captures data, it creates an outbound HTTP connection to http://www.refestltd.com/cgi-bin/yes.pl and feeds the captured data to the script found at that location. There are only two choices left with IE: Either don't browse the web with it, or don't use it for financial transactions. Thank goodness there are choices like Mozilla, Firefox and Opera, for those of us still chained to Windows....

Dynamic HTML and XML: The XMLHttpRequest
Object

As deployment of XML data and web services becomes more widespread, you may occasionally find it convenient to connect an HTML presentation directly to XML data for interim updates without reloading the page. Thanks to the little-known XMLHttpRequest object, an increasing range of web clients can retrieve and submit XML data directly, all in the background. To convert retrieved XML data into renderable HTML content, rely on the client-side Document Object Model (DOM) to read the XML document node tree and compose HTML elements that the user sees.
