Mac OS X 10.2 / Jaguar
Mac OS X 10.2 / Jaguar
03/13/2003 10:15 AM
During the last few weeks, we got a lot of emails asking whether
Fink will work Mac OS X 10.2.
The answer is: Yes, we will support 10.2. However, due to some
major changes in this new OS version, we had to make a lot of
adjustments both
to the Fink tool itself and to many packages. The current binary
distribution,
0.4.0a, will only work partially on 10.2. We are working on an
upgrade guide,
as well as a new Fink release, to support 10.2.
If you upgrade your system to 10.2 before the official Fink update
for 10.2 is ready,
many Fink packages built on 10.1 are going to work fine, but others
need to be rebuilt.
Some packages need special changes to build on 10.2. Adding
"unstable/main" to your
list of trees in /sw/etc/fink.conf (see also the FAQ)
will give you access to the latest versions of packages, many of
which include important
fixes for 10.2.
As of now, please do not email us asking about 10.2 support. If
you can't wait,
consult the mailing list archives instead.

NetNewsWire 2.0 will run on Jaguar
NetNewsWire 2.0 will run on Jaguar
07/05/2004 07:16 PMAfter listening to all the feedback (here and elsewhere) on this
issue, we’ve decided to support Jaguar in NetNewsWire 2.0.
Jaguar was the first really good OS X release, and we’d support
it forever if we could, but some day we’ll have to drop it. Not
yet, though.
In case you’re curious, here’s why we decided to continue
to support Jaguar:
1. We can provide the Panther-only features we want to provide without
dropping Jaguar support.
The main thing is searching. SearchKit is part of Panther but not part
of Jaguar, so Jaguar users just won’t get this feature, but
Panther users will.
2. It would be more work at this point to switch over to Panther-only
than to stick with Jaguar compatibility.
To switch over to using things like Cocoa bindings—which make
our life easier but don’t provide new features to
users—would mean more work. At some point, yes, we’ll make
the switch, but only when there are other compelling reasons to drop
Jaguar support.
Anyway, that’s the scoop.
Thanks for all the feedback!

NetNewsWire and Jaguar
07/03/2004 06:04 PMTo be clear, in my previous
post I’m thinking out loud about requiring Panther for
NetNewsWire 2.0.
It’s just thinking, though. No decision has been made, I’m
just bringing up the topic.
But if you’re a NetNewsWire user who uses Jaguar, I’d
especially love to hear what you think. (And I’d like to know
why you’re still on Jaguar. I’m sure there are good
reasons I haven’t thought of.)

Jaguar and Safari improvements
03/13/2003 10:21 AMHere's a few Apple updates I've noticed since I've been away :
Mac OS
X 10.2.4 : This update to Jaguar delivers enhancements to Address
Book, Classic compatibility, Finder, FireWire, Graphics, OpenGL, and
Sherlock. It also includes AFP and Windows file service improvements,
as well as audio, disc recording, graphics, and printing improvements.
It seems to be a pretty solid upgrade, but best browse the
user comments at apple.slashdot.org also.
Safari (Beta 6) : The
latest update to Safari improves the performance of loading web pages
and Flash content, adds support for XML, increases standards
conformance and delivers improved application stability. The update
also enables access to web sites that offer self-signed security
certificates. No tabbed browsing though ;-)

Gimp-Print 4.2.3 for Mac OS X Jaguar
Gimp-Print 4.2.3 for Mac OS X Jaguar
10/25/2002 07:23 AMRelease announcement: Gimp-Print 4.2.3 for Mac OS X Jaguar (and Darwin
6.0) is available today as a standard Mac OS X installer package!
Please see the web page for Mac users at
http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php3 for up-to-date
information and the latest downloads. For a complete list of changes
in
this version of Gimp-Print please visit the website or read the
release
notes included on the installer disk image.
Installing and using Gimp-Print is easy, but the set-up process for
Mac
OS X is not obvious. The Gimp-Print disk image contains an
easy-to-follow, illustrated set-up guide, "How to Print with
Gimp-Print."
For full functionality on Mac OS X users need to also install ESP
Ghostscript, a free, open-souce PostScript RIP built specifically for
use with the CUPS print spooler. As a bonus, installing ESP
Ghostscript
will provide Postscript Level3 support for raster printers. Download
links are provided on the Gimp-Print web page at
http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php3
Product Description:
High Quality, cross-platform, open-source printer drivers for Epson,
Canon, Lexmark, and HP printers. Gimp-Print is licensed under the GNU
GPL and available free of charge.
On Mac OS X Jaguar the Gimp-Print printer drivers act as plugins to
the
built-in CUPS print spooler. All earlier versions of Mac OS do not
contain CUPS and, therefore, are not compatible with Gimp-Print.
Gimp-Print provides excellent drivers for many printers that are
otherwise unsupported on Mac OS X (Gimp-Print supports almost every
Epson inkjet!). Even for printers with available vendor-supplied
drivers the Gimp-Print drivers often offer more printing options and
may provide superior results. The Gimp-Print drivers will print to any
supported printer via USB, TCP/IP (including through inexpensive
parallel-port print servers), and even to shared Windows printers via
SAMBA.
