Why OSX Feels Zippy
Why OSX Feels Zippy
06/03/2004 02:08 PMRobert Love points to an
interesting article on Kernelthread.com on ten OS-level
optimizations built in to OSX to improve performance. I'll bet even
you Mac folks didn't know about most of this stuff.
This document discusses ten things that Apple did (beyond
initial/fundamental OS design and implementation) to improve Mac OS
X's performance. Some of these are simply good ideas and obvious
candidates for implementation; some are guidelines or tools for
developers to help them create high-performance applications, while
some are proactive attempts at extracting performance from
strategically chosen quarters.
For the record, Windows XP includes some of these optimizations as
well. Regarding Linux, Mr. Love says this:
Items 3 and (particularly) 5 are very interesting. For
what it is worth, modern Linux systems do 2, 6, 9, and the equivalent
of 4 already. My preload work is similar to - albeit much less
complicated (and thus less effective?) than - item 1.

Love.

First Look: iPhoto 5
02/01/2005 09:55 PMAt times, previous releases of Apple's digital photo management
program iPhoto came across as catch-up efforts -- catching up to the
features found in third party applications that came before it;
catching up to the incredible pace that people were shooting and
storing digital pictures; and catching up to the potential of being
mature Mac OS X applications that aren't hobbled by the halting
performance and feature compromises that have been the hallmark of
Apple's 1.0 applications of late. In many ways, iPhoto 5 feels like
it's finally caught up. Some elements are organized a bit differently
than before, but in a way that suggests the designers took a closer
look at how people are actually using it.

past couple weeks and Jonathon has incorporated pretty much every
feature request and comment I made. It works perfectly for me, I
typically create a new gallery, toss some photos in it, rename the
titles on the images, then just export to Typepad as a new
gallery.
About the only downside I've found so far is the resolution limits
at Typepad, which seem to force images whatever max width and height
is in your settings (typically 500-640px). Also, I have no idea how
much the final version of PhotoToTypepad will cost, hopefully it'll be
$5-10.

not full code has leaked, and this will undoubtedly remain the
situation until an attempt is made to compile them. Microsoft are

Friends finale and NBC Tivo-b0rking --
TiVo Strikes Back
05/07/2004 10:49 AMFollowing up on yesterday's post about NBC's apparent attempts to b0rk
potential TiVoers of the Friends finale, BoingBoing reader Douglas
Clark says,
I am a loyal Tivo user and Tivo did send out a
message alert to users about the Friends episode. It was more along
the lines of "if you manually extend the time of a recording, you may
miss the beginning of the friends final episode." I find that Tivo is
pretty good about catching unusual start times and other wonky tricks
the networks play. The previous comment about HUT and ratings was
right on the money...
Link to previous BoingBoing post.
Tech maven Meg Hourihan
adds, "Even weirder is that I got a message on my Tivo warning me that
the finale of Friends would have abnormal times. The message warned
that if I wasn't just using the automatic "start on time" and "end on
time" settings (i.e. I manually set the start time as 8 PM) that I
might miss some. What makes things weirder and worse is that Tivo
still didn't record the whole show! I made sure my settings were what
the message instructed, and happened to watch the show live. Tivo
kicked in to record at 8:59 PM (which is what it listed the start time
as) but stopped at 9:59! According to the time on my digital cable
box, the program didn't end until 10:03 PM. So if I hadn't watched it
live, I would have missed the last four minutes. Seems like a major
screw-up on Tivo's part, especially after sending out that
message!"
