12/12/2003 03:13 PMThis review takes a look at an adapter made by Creative that allows
users to stream music from computers to a stereo: The reviewer's
biggest complaints surround user interfaces. The remote is apparently
clunky and doesn't offer certain features like the ability to make
song lists or rewind or fast forward. Also, he says the PC software
isn't very user friendly. He also complains about the lag between the
time when you choose a song and when it starts playing. I suspect that
happens because it takes a few seconds for the box to query the
computer and grab the song to start playing it. That ought to speed up
in future versions of these products....

New Mac OS X Innovators Contest
New Mac OS X Innovators Contest
07/07/2004 05:42 PMO’Reilly has announced a new Mac OS X Innovators Contest, with the award to be
presented at this year’s OS X conference in October.
If you’re an OS X developer, no matter how small, I encourage
you to enter the contest. It was a great thing for us (NetNewsWire won
last year in the first contest)—and it would have been a good
learning experience even had we not won, since in entering we had to
write about our application succinctly and describe why anyone would
be interested in it. (Which is a valuable thing to be able to do.)
I’ll be attending the conference, and I look forward to
congratulating the winners—which could be you!

07/11/2004 01:37 AMNow that WWDC and the Apple Design Awards have made big splashes, it's
time to turn our sights to the 2004 Mac OS X Innovators Contest. If
you have a cool application or plugin that runs natively on Panther,
this event is your opportunity to show them to the world, and maybe
win some great prizes along the way. This year's event will be very
similar to last year's, except that we're only having one round
(instead of three). The contest is open now, so you can read the
rules, then check out the prizes, and when you're ready, complete the
entry form.

Primetime hypermedia: Why now?
03/22/2005 05:12 PM
The umbrella title for this series of columns--Primetime
Hypermedia--suggests
that, for what used to be called multimedia, the long march through
the
desert is finally over. The mission of these columns is to explore and
document the promised land that we are now starting to colonize. But
here's a question I've been asked a lot lately: Why now?
The question is subtler than you might think because, in some ways,
little has changed. We've had audio and video on the internet for
nearly as long as there's been an internet. At times I feel like an
archaeologist hacking through underbrush to find artifacts left by an
almost-forgotten tribe. When I investigated SMIL,
for example, the trail I followed had been blazed years before. The
video genre I've rechristened screencasting has
antecedents that go back a decade or more, as does the audio genre now
called podcasting. So, again, why now?
Two reasons. The platform for hypermedia has matured, and so has the
publishing environment. In both cases, obvious and not-so-obvious
factors are in play. [Full story at O'Reilly Network]

Note to innovators: translate technology

03/06/2004 01:51 AMWhen I heard about the XHTML Friends Network, I kind of filed
it away with FOAF and other
technology projects that sound interesting but entirely too academic,
since they often offer no immediate means to incorporate them into my
sites/tools. When I noticed that XFN was a blogroll thing and that I
recently started using some code to extract my blo.gs favorites into
a blogroll here on this site, I asked Jim if it was possible to
incorporate xfn into the blo.gs tool.
He launched it today and here's a screenshot of
the interface for one of my favorites. It's dead simple, letting you
click a few boxes and push a button to fill out your relationship info
and eventually the info will percolate into my blogroll here on my
site.
A lot of new technologies focus so much on the nitty gritty details
of RDF, XML, etc and I think developers forget that people won't or
can't use any technology until it's got an easy-to-use interface. I
know it's important at some level, but I couldn't care less about say,
which RDF vocabulary FOAF will use, I only care how easy it will be to
add FOAF stuff to my site (best is having something do it
automatically) and what cool apps people can build off it.

Technology Review online editor Brad King says:
This year, Technology Review magazine will again assemble a
list of top young innovators under the age of 35 -- the TR35, or "35
Innovators under 35." The basic idea, however, is the same: to
showcase young people who have displayed extraordinary talent and
potential as technology innovators. The list will be published in
TR's October 2005 issue, and the 35 winners honored at the Emerging
Technologies Conference at MIT in September.

THE WORLD'S
TEN GREATEST INNOVATORS
THE WORLD'S
TEN GREATEST INNOVATORS
12/19/2004 02:54 PM
About
time for some good news. Here are ten stand-out companies which, in
the
midst of a miserly, risk-averse horde of unimaginative, uninnovative
companies in almost every sector of the economy, we should be
celebrating. While the anorexia-crazed corporatist giants believe the
best way to deal with innovation is to shut it down by patenting
everything and suing every upstart into oblivion, these ten companies
are setting the example to show how business should be capitalizing on
the market, not cornering it:
Most Innovative Media Company:
Fast Company. The December 'Creativity Edition' of Fast Company magazine is now online,
and I'd encourage you to read it, cover to cover, and then buy
yourself
and a friend a subscription to this magazine, which towers above its
competition. In my opinion there are only three indispensable
magazines
on the market: Fast Company,
The New Yorker, and Consumer Reports. The gang at fast
company are not only great thinkers, they are constantly thinking
ahead.
Most Innovative Manufacturer:
WL Gore.
The makers of Gore-Tex and a lot of stunningly inventive medical
products you've probably never heard of. Fast Company's complete story
on the company is available in pdf form here. I mentioned
an earlier
study on this company last spring. Best takeaway: The six secrets of
Gore's innovation success:
- The Power of Small
Teams:
Gore tries to keep its teams small (and caps even its manufacturing
plants at 200 people). That way, everyone can get to know one another
and work together with minimal rules, as though they were a task force
tackling a crisis.
- No Ranks,
No Titles, No Bosses:
Associates (employees) select mentors, they don't have bosses.
Associates decide for themselves what new commitments to take on.
Committees evaluate an associate's contribution and decide on
compensation. There are no standardized job descriptions or
categories.
- Take the Long
View:
Gore is impatient with the status quo but patient about the time --
often years, sometimes decades -- it takes to develop revolutionary
products and bring them to market.
- Make Time for Face Time: There's
no hierarchical chain of command; anyone in the company can talk to
anyone else. Gore discourages memos and prefers in-person
communication
to email.
- Lead by
Leading:
Associates spend 10% of their time pursuing speculative new ideas.
Anyone is free to launch a project and be a leader, so long as they
have the passion and ideas to attract followers. Many of Gore's
breakthroughs started with one person acting on his or her own
initiative, and developed as colleagues helped in their spare
time.
- Celebrate
Failure: Don't stigmatize it. When a project doesn't work out
and the team kills it, they celebrate with beer or champagne.
Most Innovative Software
Company: Google. I
reported earlier on Google
Desktop and Picasa, but these guys never rest on their laurels.
Take a look at Google Local,
which allows you to find the closest Thai restaurant or tailor to you,
even if you live out in the boonies like me. Or look at Google Keyhole,
a subscription service that allows you to use animation to zoom in and
out of annotated aerial photographs, taking you by movie camera
anywhere in the world you want to go. Or try Google Alerts,
which will send you an e-mail whenever new stories show up anywhere on
the web that contain your selected keywords. And there's more --
browse
the entire Google Labs to see
what's coming next. These guys are the energizer bunnies of
innovation.
Most Innovative Hardware
Company: Apple.
With the iPod, Apple has reaffirmed its ability to create and reinvent
whole hardware product categories.
Most Innovative Financial
Organization: ING.
The Dutch company that realized you don't need offices to run a bank
has got the big banks, and now the big insurance companies, running
scared. They offer better rates, minimal bureaucracy, by simply
thinking smarter and constantly challenging all the established rules
in the financial services industry.
Most Innovative Retailer: eBay.
You know what these guys have done. Long after Wal-Mart is disgraced
for having destroyed so many jobs and ruined so many companies in the
race for the bottom, eBay will be remembered as the real innovators in retailing.
Best Blockbuster Idea
Incubator: The New Yorker. This is the company that nurtures people
like Malcolm Gladwell (The Tipping Point) and James
Surowiecki (The Wisdom of Crowds). Who
would have thought you could make money by paying people to just think
about great, world-changing ideas?
Most Innovative Business
Advisor: Charles
Handy would be my choice,
though Clay
Christensen, Peter
Drucker, Gary Hamel
and Michael Schrage are pretty good too.
Best Website for
Creativity-Boosting: IdeaChampions.
If giving things away free is its own reward, Mitch Ditkoff and the
crew at IdeaChampions should be very wealthy. This little company's
website is a goldmine of good ideas and tools that spark creativity
and
innovation. If you can't afford to hire them, bookmark their site and visit often. If you
can afford to hire them, do. And you can help them out by
participating in this just-for-f
un quiz.
Most Socially &
Environmentally Responsible Innovator: Patagonia. This is a company that developed
a process that recycles the plastic in discarded soda bottles to make
state-of-the-art clothing. And they donate 10% of profits to
environmental causes that they're deeply involved in. In more ways
than
one, they make you feel warm all over.
A few other companies, like Amazon, Sony, and 3M would have made the
list, but unfortunately they're on the Boycott
List. Ingenuity must be tempered by responsibility.

Okay, so Nokia just dropped three phones onto us,
and they're pretty crazy, and by 'crazy' I mean 'sort of ugly.' I have
to cop to sort of liking the Tron-style and the asymetrical design -
the one round corner, one square corner 'new Nokia' look - but I have
a feeling I'll be in the minority. Would it kill them to just release
a nice, silver phone that you could take home to mom?
Anyway, here's the breakdown, and I'll probably go after this post
in a couple of waves. The one pictured here is the Nokia 7280, which
you might notice doesn't have a keypad. That's because Nokia designed
it to be "sleek," "sexy," and "edgy." (I'm not joking.)

with a 6 hour talk time, and this Nokia Wireless GPS Module LD-1W that

en-lightening: A new messaging option on some Nokia handsets is more
like semaphore than computing.

12/31/2004 10:59 AMOn Malik likes
his. I wonder if I can trade out my 7610 for a 6630? Charlie?
Here's
Om's post....
It is hard for me to imagine that I am carrying around in my
pocket a computer that is as powerful as my first generation Pentium
powered AST desktop, I wrestled with back in 1995, typing out
scintiallting stories about memory chip prices for Quick Nikkei News.
It seemed breezy enough, running the now forgotten Windows 3.1. With
some kicking around, the TCP/IP stack on it worked for me to get
Internet access as well. Fast forward by ten years, and the new Nokia 6630
packs a mightier punch - a 200 MHz ARM 5 processor - in a small
but lethal package.
The Nokia 6630 is based
on Symbian OS. It is a tri-band phone for GSM 900/1800/1900, EDGE and
WCDMA networks. Weighing 127 grams and measuring 110 x 60 x 20.6 mm,
it is world’s smallest megapixel phone for GSM and WCDMA networks.
It has everything you would normally want in a good smart-enough
phone. Clearly, this is the best 3G phone on the market, especially
given that how the others are so clunky and well ugly! It is light
enough that sometimes I forget it is sitting in my pocket.

Looks like T-Mobile Germany is getting the Nokia 6630 (or
else they made a bad choice in stock photography in this marketing
page). I wonder if that means T-Mobile will carry it in the US? My
guess would be no, since the whole point of the 6630 is that it works
on high-speed 3G networks - something T-Mobile USA doesn't really
have. (Thanks, Armin!)
