Future talk

Future talk 04/09/2004 04:06 PM

So you may have heard about Future Me, the website that lets you write emails to your future self, and set a delivery date years from now. The possible conversations are fascinating, and yet email is so clunky and leads to such asynchronous exchanges. I want immediacy in my future me chats! Thus it was with trepidation that I began an AIM conversation this afternoon with my future self.

megnut: you there?
megnut2012: yeah, what's up?
megnut: well, i'm just wondering, um, what's it like being 40? what's our life like now?
megnut2012: eh, pretty much the same as being 32
megnut: really? huh, no epiphanies?
megnut2012: nah, not so much.
megnut: what about wrinkles?
megnut: does all that wrinkle cream i've been buying lately actually work? or do you have a lot of sun damage?

My development on Future AIM Me begins in earnest later this week. Ready your questions for yourself now and look for a rough alpha in mid-summer.

Future Brings Push-to-Talk-over-Wi-Fi

Future Brings Push-to-Talk-over-Wi-Fi 08/11/2004 05:14 PM
I thought we'd have flying cars and live on the moon, but apparently the future brings Wi-Fi walkie-talkies: Some speculation on the future availability of the revenue-enhancing push-to-talk service available over cell networks and pioneered by Nextel moving to Wi-Fi. With PTT, you have a group that you communicate with immediately, walkie-talkie style, by pushing a button on the phone. There's obviously no good reason that the underlying carrier method has to be cell based: an Internet gateway and a Wi-Fi chip could allow this kind of instant routing over any authenticated Wi-Fi hotspot or home/office network. The piece doesn't make it clear whether the FCC is approving Wi-Fi to Wi-Fi PTT or hybrids--Wi-Fi or cell on either end....

Top ten myths about gurus

Top ten myths about gurus 04/06/2005 12:35 PM
David Pescovitz: Over at Guruphiliac, Jody Radzik outlines the top ten myths about your guru... any guru. Here are a couple:
10. Guruji knows what's best for you
While we acknowledge the possibility that a real true guru could know what's best for you, s/he'd also know it's best to let you decide for yourself. Gurus who pretend to know what's best for all their devotees are fooling themselves as much as they are their disciples...

4. Guruji has no desires
This is based in the most pervasive of the occluding expectations, that desire somehow prevents self-realization. Desire is merely the way the body responds to conditions. The guru may (or may not) be over sex, but when they want a Twinkie, they go get a Twinkie.

Survey says Apple employees optimistic

Survey says Apple employees optimistic
on company’s future
03/30/2005 05:20 PM
Apple Computer employees are optimistic on their company's future, New York research firm Vault has found in new employee surveys on the computer giant. Says a former customer solutions specialist, "The business of the company is doing great especially with the iPod and their innovative designs. However just as any large corporation the large scale structure, the organization gets lost at the lower levels. The micromanagement needs to be but to a minimum and something needs to be done to increase retention and lower the turnover rate which is substantial." A project manager writes, "Apple has its challenges for market share, and will never compete directly with Dell or HP. Instead, the focus is on creativity and the Digital Hub. Products such as the iPod are keeping us profitable during the economic downturn. If Apple continues to develop innovative and quality products like the iPod, then the long term picture should be secure." Another project manager observes, "Apple today is just like any other conservative company. Just managed the service implementation for a new product we will announce at MacWorld 2005. This should be a good year for Apple but it will not reflect in my salary or any kind of bonus I dream of receiving." Vault's employee surveys give investors and jobseekers insight into the company's business operations. Neither Vault nor its employee surveys are endorsed by or affiliated with Apple Computer.
