China Drops Wireless Protectionism, for

China Drops Wireless Protectionism, for
Now
04/22/2004 01:25 PMNY Times: China Agrees to Postpone Wireless Plan. China agreed on
Wednesday to give up a plan to impose its own standard for wireless
technology, essentially agreeing to join the rest of the world rather
than dividing it up.
This is good news. China's push
for its own standards in a variety of areas is understandable, but the
wireless move was blatant protectionism.
But don't imagine that China is giving up on its wish to make its own
destiny, and to stop paying what amount to taxes to the Intels,
Microsofts and other big U.S., Japanese and European companies in all
areas of technology. That's a reasonable goal for any nation.

Who Is Pressing the PSP Porn?
Who Is Pressing the PSP Porn?
06/22/2005 01:57 AM
GamesIndustry.biz is running a story where a Sony exec calls
the recently-announced GLAY'z PSP Porn
"utterly undesirable," going on to claim that they are powerless to
stop its production. So who then, if not Sony, is making the PSP UMD
discs the Japanese porn will be printed on? I was under the impression
that part of the reason for using UMD in the PSP was that Sony would
be able to control the manufacturing, and thusly get a cut from every
disc pressed (a la Nintendo and its cartridges). If that's not
the case, who is pressing the discs, and what prevents them from
offering things like, say, blank, burnable UMD media and drives? I'm
asking these as questions, because I don't know, but would like to. Is
it Sony being coy or could we actually have a rogue UMD producer on
our hands?

01/22/2004 02:13 AMWi-LAN said that China Telecom is using its gear to deploy a broadband
wireless network in Tianjin: China Telecom will use unlicensed
frequencies and looks at this deployment as a test before potentially
building similar networks in other regions. The point-to-multipoint
network can be used to supply data and voice. Wi-LAN uses proprietary
technology based on OFDM but says it's the same technology that makes
up the 802.16 standard. That standard is backed by the WiMAX Forum,
which hasn't started certifying products yet. The press release
doesn't seem to be online yet but may be available here eventually....

12/19/2004 03:35 PMLos Angeles Times - Back in the prehistoric 1970s, one of life's
little pleasures was the ability to slam down a telephone on annoying
callers. Now, thanks to the rise of cordless phones, the best you can
do is fiercely poke the off button — or, if money is no object,
throw the receiver into a wall.
