Sounds That Surround You Make It Onto
Your Playlist
03/06/2004 01:53 AM

The air is full of sounds that are not filed on your digital music player: new recordings and live performances on FM radio, not to mention the ambient music of the world around you. The JMTek MelodiBox MP3 lets you add them to your collection on the fly.

RIAA Wants To Make Sure Radio Sounds Bad

RIAA Wants To Make Sure Radio Sounds Bad 06/11/2004 05:34 PM
Mikester writes in to tell us that the RIAA is complaining that: "Digital radio broadcasts that bring CD-quality sound to the airwaves could lead to unfettered song copying if protections are not put in place." Not at all surprising, of course, but they're basically complaining that digital radio - whose whole claim to fame is the quality of the sound - sounds too good.

True surround sound

True surround sound 06/30/2004 01:12 PM
Audio engineers at UC Davis have developed a new technology that delivers motion-tracked binaural sound (MTB). It's an update on conventional binaural recording which uses microphones embedded in a dummy head to capture the "location" of sound in a room. One problem with conventional binaural recording is that the sound doesn't change when you move your head. For example, if you hear a recording of someone behind you and turn your head to face them, it still sounds like they're behind you.
"The new method records through multiple microphones (eight for voice, 16 for music) spaced around a head-sized ball or cylinder. The sound is played back through headphones with a small tracking device attached to the top to follow head movements. As you turn your head while listening, the system mixes sound from different microphones, reproducing what you would hear if you were in the room."

Iosono: Equitable Surround Sound

Iosono: Equitable Surround Sound 07/27/2004 09:21 AM

iosono_sound.jpg image

Wired News profiles a new sound technology called 'Iosono' which aims to recreate the sweet spot of 3D sound in every seat of a theater. Created by one of the major developers of MP3, Iosono uses over 300 speakers arranged around a space to provide more realistic environment, one where sound can subtly move across the room for everyone listening, not just those in the middle of all the speakers. Unfortunately, as cool as the technology might be, movies theaters are already scrambling to scrape together enough money to pay for digital projection and other upgrades, and since no movie studios are currently producing movies with the Iosono format, it's unlikely owners will be rushing to install a 300-speaker upgrade for a format with an unknown future.

On today's edition of the NPR program "Day to Day," I report on IOSONO, a new audio editing and delivery system that uses hundreds of speakers and complex software to create what developers tout as "3D sound." This technology is the creation of Dr. Karlheinz Brandenburg, a pioneer of the MP3 codec, and was developed by a team at Germany's Frauenhofer Institute -- where MP3 was born.

Roku SoundBridge adds free Wi-Fi 08/30/2004 10:29 AM
Palo Alto, Calif.-based digital media product maker Roku announced Monday that its SoundBri dge network music player now ships with free Wi-Fi connectivity. Wireless networking was previously a US$50 option for the device. SoundBridge streams digital music and Internet radio from computers -- including Macs -- to powered speaker systems or stereo systems. Unlike Apple's own AirPort Express device, the SoundBridge incorporates a florescent display and a remote control that enables users to view information on artists and playlists and change the music they're listening to. The SoundBridge supports MP3, AAC, AIFF and WAV audio file formats, and it also plays directly from iTunes without needing any additional software to work (though it isn't able to play FairPlay-encrypted music purchased through the iTunes Music Store). The SoundBridge is available in M1000 and M2000 models, for US$249.99 and $499.99 respectively.
