Sun Microsystems: The Java Problem
02/09/2003 11:48 AMThis document details the difficulties that keep our Solaris Java
implementation from being practical for the development of common
software applications. It represents a consensus of several senior
engineers within Sun Microsystems. We believe that our Java
implementation is inappropriate for a large number of categories of
software application. We do not believe these flaws are inherent in
the Java platform but that they relate to difficulties in our Solaris
implementation.
We all agree that the Java language offers many advantages over the
alternatives. We would generally prefer to deploy our applications in
Java but the implementation provided for Solaris is inadequate to the
task of producing supportable and reliable products.
There's no news like really shitty "air the laundry" bad news.
Apparently this is an internal memo of Sun Microsystems that discusses
the problems they are having with Java on Solaris.

22 years as an innovator and power player in enterprise IT, that Sun
might erode into simply a niche player, dropping out of the same
league as Microsoft and IBM in IT power and influence. What's your
take on where the house of Solaris is headed? Read on for our writer's

much larger as it develops a search engine that will be licensed to
other Web sites, said spokeswoman Alison Diboll. [...] Unlike Google,
A9 isn't trying to develop an all-purpose search engine that indexes
billions of Web pages. Instead, the startup is focusing on a search
engine sweet spot -- e-commerce.The article is very vague so it's hard
to get a handle one exactly what A9 is, but it does sound a lot like

Lawyers Can't Agree On Competitor
Keyword Ads
07/06/2004 05:28 AMThe whole Google selling trademarked ads issue is getting ridiculous.
Now a
bunch of lawyers are arguing over it, after one
lawyer bought Google ads on the name of a competitor. The competitor
in question sent a nastygram to the lawyer saying he was trying to
"sponge" off his reputation. Except... that's not true. As the
accused lawyer in question points out, he just put his name where
potential customers might be looking for it. As we've
pointed
out before this is no different than a new soda company wanting to
be placed on the shelf next to Coca-Cola. They know people will go
looking for Coke, and they want to make sure their bottles on there as
well. The
purpose of trademark law is to protect someone from
being lied to when one company claims they're something they aren't.
However, to just make sure your advertisements appear where people are
looking for your competitors is simply good business. The reporter
then goes out and digs up a bunch of quotes from other lawyers
suggesting that the ad-buying lawyer is an underhanded bastard who is
somehow "cheating." It's pretty clear from the quotes that most of
the quoted lawyers don't understand the actual issue at hand, but that
doesn't seem to stop the reporter from quoting them all, without
quoting a single source (other than the accused lawyer) with the
opposing viewpoint.
