Santa Shortage

Santa Shortage 12/22/2004 01:53 AM

Good Santas are hard to find

« A fine specimen of an authentic Joulupukki, possibly exported from Finland, in the Burlington Mall, Burlington, Massachusettes in 1998. »

I found this picture a while back when digging through some old photos and I remembered watching the old guy for a while since the beard and every detail about his costume was perfect. Had I been a child, I would have wanted to believe this person was really Santa. The Sanomat today had an article about how difficult it is to find suitable Santas and, in England, kids can't even sit on Santa's lap anymore due to a paranoid frenzy over Santas getting handsy. I briefly entertained applying for a Joulupukki job on one of the cruise ships for grins, but figured I'd just make kids cry by telling them they were all going to get coal and switches under the tree. Ho Ho Ho.

Acer PD520 DLP Projector Review

Acer PD520 DLP Projector Review 05/28/2004 11:00 AM

TrustedReviews takes a look at the Acer PD520 DLP projector and comes away moderately happy, although its not the most stringent of reviews (writer Gordon Kelly seems mostly just enthused about using a projector in general). Although lacking in some connections both common (composite) and less common (SCART), it in general looks to be a solid projector for a reasonable price (around $1,200 or so). Unfortunately, Acer isn't pushing their projectors into the US market at this time, so if you want to give the PD520 a whirl, you'll have to talk to some importers.

Acer Ferrari 3200 Laptop Review 05/28/2004 11:00 AM

acer_ferrari_3200.jpg imageAlthough it seems like brand dilution to me, if you really need a laptop with the famous Ferrari red and logo, you should check out the Acer Ferrari 3200 reviews, like the one they just posted at Pocket Lint. While it's not the absolute fastest laptop out there, it's no slouch--a AMD Athlon 64 2800+ compliments an ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 128MB RAM, plus multi-format DVD burner, 4-in-1 integrated card reader, and in-built 802.11g and Bluetooth. The one saving grace of this machine, in my opinion, is the price. Although the price varies wildly from vendor to vendor, it can be found fairly easily for about $2,000 without much searching--at least Acer left out the premium Ferrari price.

Acer TravelMate 371TMi Reviewed 08/07/2004 10:36 AM

TravelMate-371TMi_3.jpg imageClearly, the Acer TravelMate 370 notebook will not a happy gamer make - that's clear from just the first paragraph of BIOS's review. But if you're just looking for a decent machine to get some work done, the 370-series might just barely meet your needs. But despite a fairly positive review on BIOS, I'm thinking that any machine with a low resolution (1,024 by 768 pixels), no 802.11g (just b), and sort of an ass-end-of-space design is going to need to be a lot cheaper than $1,800 to be worth the sacrifice, to me. But hey, it has built-in Bluetooth, and since this is Gizmodo, that makes everything better, right? (Answer: no.)

Acer Aspire 1800, PCI Express Laptop 09/10/2004 09:26 AM

acerAspire-1800_2.jpg imageAcer has a new desktop replacement laptop out that's sort of ho-hum in general, but is the first to market with a mobile graphics architecture based on PCI Express. ATI's Mobility Radeon X600 powers the 17-inch, 1,280 by 800 pixel screen, and all the other usual desktop replacement parts come out to play, like a Pentium 4, Wi-Fi, and a built-in subwoofer. The relatively low-resolution of the screen could actually be a benefit to those looking to the Acer Aspire 1800 as a gaming laptop, as the 64MB video solution won't have enough oomph to render graphics at resolutions much higher than that (but it's still might eke out some anti-aliasing).
