Interactive SMS Billboards

Interactive SMS Billboards 07/23/2004 04:34 AM

Advertising Agency Ogilvy, in a European first, has launched a new ad campaign for the Ford Fiesta, combining interactive billboards with SMS.

SPG_20_33_0_11.jpg In several major cities of Belgium, young people are staring up at a huge Ford Fiesta billboard - visually similar to the TV pinball machine commercial - while texting on their mobile phones.

Each passer-by can try their hand at winning a Ford Fiesta by sending an SMS with his/her first name to a short code and indicating the code on the billboard. The billboard then responds to this SMS; displaying an "encouragment to continue" message adressed to the person, and sends him/her another SMS with a question. If he or she answers correctly, the billboard reacts like a winning pinball machine and he/she is entitled to an "extra ball" meaning he/she will be included in the draw for a winner. For every incorrect answer sent by text message, the pinball machine displays a "tilt".

The fiestafun website allows anyone to check on the progress of the game or find out where exactly these billboards are located.

Interactive TV. This Time We Mean It.
Probably
07/16/2004 10:05 PM
"Interactive TV" is one of those topics that people love to trot out every few years as the next big thing, and then quickly trot back in after each trial fails. Clearly, technology keeps improving, and part of the problem has been a television industry that seems to think "interactive TV" is really just "enhanc ed TV" where you click the big red button to get "more info" on something. Instead, people have gravitated to things like TiVo and the internet, and moved away from live TV. However, here it comes again. Last month we noted more tie-ins between broadba nd and TV, and now InternetNews is wondering (yet again, but this time with feeling...) if interactive TV is a killer app? They give an example of a new "Dinner and a movie" service being tested out where you can sit down to watch a movie and with a few clicks of the remote have a pizza delivered. It's not entirely clear what benefit this has over, say, the phone or the internet, but since it's in the TV apparently it must be much cooler. The thing is, we have an interactive system in our homes already: the internet. The TV is generally a broadcast medium. When people want to be broadcast to, they watch TV. When they want interactivity, they use the internet. Admittedly, some of the lines may blur, but this push towards interactivity (so far) doesn't seem like much more than yet another way for companies to try to sell to people.

What Does Interactive News Mean To AOL?

What Does Interactive News Mean To AOL? 01/16/2004 01:03 PM
Mark Glaser notes that AOL is now promoting more "interactive" news that talks about "involvement journalism" and wonders if it's possible that AOL has actually understood participatory journalism. The simple answer is no. Not at all. AOL appears to believe that "interactive journalism" means you take some wire feeds, and add a message board or a poll to it. Maybe some streaming video, because, apparently, someone still thinks "interactive" means video. The real issue, of course, is that this won't matter much. Who uses AOL for their news coverage? It's pretty much the same thing you can find elsewhere, and the stuff that's really drawing interest for being different, the real "participatory journalism" is far away from AOL. So, they won't lose much with this new approach, but it's hardly interactive, and they certainly aren't going to gain much out of it, either.

More fun from Radio and Music
Interactive...
04/12/2004 06:06 PM

Those of you in the UK today may have stumbled upon Radio 1's Ten Hour Takeover - in which members of the listening public got to choose which songs were played - only using the magic telecommunicative power of text messaging. What you might not know is that this was another BBC Radio and Music Interactive enterprise! Better still, some of the creative parties involved have been able to write up some of the technology and experience on their weblogs - Matt Biddulph (head of our architecture team) has written up his exhaustive and open thoughts on the design and implementation of the project in a piece called Moyles-proof code over on hackdiary. And Dan Hill's also posted his thoughts about the project in a post called Tak eover Radio. More satisfying still is that conversation around the even has even started to creep over the rest of webloggia - with David from Fuddland posting about his experience of the day (10 Hour Takeover). I was listening to the radio at exactly the same time as David and was equally impressed at the quality of the selections - although I'm not convinced that the person in the car next to us at the traffic lights near Bluebell Lane in Norwich was as delighted by Dolly Parton's "9 to 5" as I was.

Wouldn’t be cool if technology was more interactive with the audience of a journalist’s work? Shawn Van Every, a researcher at New York University, seems to think so. He has taken it upon himself to show each of us how it can be done with a little ingenuity, spare parts and a whole lot of imagination. His work involves a video rig interconnected with Internet chat which enables his audience to make suggestions to him…

Darren sez, "Okay, get this: You look at a map of the United States, with each zip code represented as a single white dot. You punch in a zip code - say, your own - and watch as the applet zooms down on that specific location. For example, the entire country is white dots to begni with; then, when you hit '9', only the West Coast lights up; with '0', Los Angeles, and then '210' narrows it down to Beverly Hills in specific. It's frighteningly addictive." Link (Thanks, Darren!)
