Early clinical trials of an appetite-supressing nasal spray are promising:
The hormone in the spray, PYY (for Peptide YY 3-36), is what makes people feel full after a meal. It is made in the small intestine in response to food and then carried by the bloodstream to the brain, where it switches off the urge to eat. Obese people seem to make less of the hormone than lean people.

Note to geeks: look beyond the end of
your nose

Note to geeks: look beyond the end of
your nose
04/18/2005 02:51 PM

I know this has been going on for quite a while, but recently I've seen so many examples of it that I feel like stating the obvious that so many seem to be missing. Every time I see the new term ajax talked about online, there's a harsh knee-jerk programmer/geek reaction. "We don't need your stinking labels" and "XMLHttpRequest is a perfect fine name and has worked for years" are things you often read. On some level, these reactions are to be expected when you give a new label to an old technology, but lately, those reactions have been drowning out more substantive discussions.

But what baffles me most is that programmers are missing the big picture. Yes, XMLHttpRequest has been around for years, and ajax is just a pretty term for DHTML and javascript, but the beauty of the term ajax is that we now have an easy way to sell the technology. I know engineers have a natural fear of anything and anyone in the marketing world, but now that managers, VC, and funders all know what ajax is and that users want that kind of application interaction, they're much more likely to pay for it.

When a programmer drops the umpteenth comment on a weblog saying the term ajax sounds stupid and is unnecessary, they don't seem to realize how much more business they can pull in (if freelancing) or how they could score a raise (if salaried) if they would just add it to their next web application. Yes, the term is simply a marketing one and yes the technology has been around for a while, but it has been misunderstood and/or unknown until now. Ajax now means more money will funnel to your projects and users will prefer your products over the competition. In the end, the more people that use and understand what "ajax" means, the better off you'll be as a programmer.

Second, click on the "Ads by Goooooogle" link and you'll be taken to a page where:

Google would like to know what you think of these ads. Please provide your feedback by filling out this form

AdSense for Domains

AdSense for Domains 06/05/2005 11:47 PM

Google AdSense for domains: Domain squatters, your AdSense program has arrived. Apparently it keys off the domain name itself, since there's nothing else on the page.

AdSense for domains allows domain name registrars and large domain name holders to unlock the value in their parked page inventory. AdSense for domains delivers targeted, conceptually related keywords and advertisements to parked domain name pages by using Google's semantic technology to "understand" the meaning of each domain name.

Adsense Article

Adsense Article 03/14/2005 06:07 PM

Google's AdSense a bonanza for some Web sites: An article about AdSense that states numbers, which is rare:

Tales of AdSense riches range from a few hundred dollars a month to $50,000 or more a year, though high-dollar paydays are rare. They require a Web site with tons of traffic and the ability to put in 18-hour days working the system. [...]

In his first four months of Web publishing, AdSense brought in $45,000. Some of his blogs produce $3,000 a month. His best do "four figures," Calacanis says, though he's reluctant to fill in the exact numbers. "And that's with zero marketing," he says.

There are some detractors:

"This is a program that rewards people not for creating the best content, but for how to create sites to attract more advertising," says Danny Sullivan, editor of Search Engine Watch online newsletter. "AdSense has nothing to do with search. It effectively turns the Internet into a billboard for Google's ads."

I've been happy with the program, and that's all I think I'm allowed to say about it.

AdSense Expriments

AdSense Expriments 02/11/2004 04:14 PM
I'm experimenting with Google AdSense on my weblog. My plan is to be selective about where it's used, but first I need to figure out how smart their targeting really is. So don't be surprised if you see ads pop up now and then. No, I don't need the money. Heck, I don't expect to make enough to matter, but I have some ideas that I can probably use to greatly reduce the annoyance factor for my regular visitors/readers. It'll...

AdSense and Borders

AdSense and Borders 04/01/2005 11:48 AM

If you have Google Adsense on your site, here is the best piece of advice I can give you: don't put borders around your ads. I had a border around my skyscraper banner on the right here, so it sat in its own little box.

A friend told me to take the border off. I figured it couldn't hurt to try it, so I made the border white, so it just fades into the background. Nothing else was changed. I did it in the middle of the month, so the first half was with the border, the second half without.

The result in terms of clickthrough rate?

With border: 1.62%
Without border: 2.76%

That's a seventy percent increase.

I personally would have sold it for 10x as much, but that's because I know if you read it, you'll make 100x as much with a href=http://go.lockergnome.com/527AdSense/a as you are today. I've got a few more ideas I'm kicking around, including doing an AdSense afternoon seminar up here in Seattle. I'll keep you posted. Until then, read the eBook: /p blockquote p This is a real, recent screenshot of my a href=http://go.lockergnome.com/527AdSense stats page/a. With Google's permission, I'm able to reveal how much I'm making with AdSense. But they've asked me to keep details of my CPM and CTR private, so I have blacked them out in order to comply with Google's terms of service. I'm not a renegade and I value my relationship with Google too much! /p /blockquote p And if you haven't yet signed up for Google AdSense yet, get going - a href=http://go.lockergnome.com/529sign up for Google AdSense now/a. /p
