Spam-filters are trained to catch anything that looks like spam, including discussions of spam and spam-filters.

"Patterns of e-mail use are definitely being impacted both by spam and by antispam filters," said Craig Hughes, chief architect at McAfee Security and co-developer of the open-source SpamAssassin spam-filter project.

"I myself run into the problem all the time, mainly because what I'm corresponding about frequently involves discussions of spam or particular spam strategies..."

"I've lost count of the number of e-mails that get bounced back thanks to spam filters getting triggered by completely innocent words and phrases," said Suresh Ramasubramanian, head of security and antispam operations for managed mail-services firm Outblaze.

A recent knowledge base entry describes in fairly good detail how spam is filtered from .Mac accounts. According to Apple uses software from Brightmail along with list-based filtering. Apparently Apple also does something on their own:

.Mac also monitors all incoming message activity for trends. This information can reveal a previously unknown source of spam when they begin to send mail to members of the .Mac community.

Bayesian anti-spam filters count word-frequency in suspect and compare the results to profiles of word-frequency in spam and ham. Defeating this requires that your spam include a lot of natural human prose. So spammers have started to mine the Gutenberg Project and other sources of human-generated ASCII and dumping random hunks of literature into their messages to get around the filters.

Blogger and journalist Clive Thompson found an excerpt from Chapter 20 of The Master Key by Wizard of Oz author L Frank Baum in a message that had as its subject line "the big unit" (no prizes for guessing what the rest of it was hawking).

I have on several occasions dissed the Mac OS X email client “Mail.app” fairly heavily in this space. I finally got myself smoothly integrated with the Sun VPN, and I must report that the latest release of Mail.app is now handling both my email lives (Sun and Textuality) smoothly, efficiently, and with no fuss. The spam filtering is failing a bit under the pressure, but is still pretty darn good; and the filtering and styling and threading and so on is really about all you could wish for. Another reason to think about migrating to OS X.

A Line in the Sand: Here's a good, level-headed opinion on why the Movable Type 3.0 controversy shouldn't be one.

People feel like they have been betrayed… with all this talk of people jumping ship. Half of you would still fall into the free release category! Doesn’t anyone realize what MT will be turning into? If these people are making MT their livelihood, judging by their great track record, you can count on a quality product that will have a devoted team working to constantly make it better. [...]

Isn't there anything better to get all up in arms about? Too many of you are acting alarmed because you feel like you have to, this hive-mentality is ridiculous! If you have such a huge site, with so many authors, so many blogs and can't find the funds, then just simply don't upgrade right now.

I have no opinion about this whatsoever. Here are just four links in a row, presented in a reverse-chronological (most recent first) fashion with no attempt whatsoever to make a point, which nonetheless are prefaced with a proviso that any position you may infer that I have is entirely mine and not that of my employer. And I don't have one anyway:

• Fox News hits back at "Outfoxed" video and New York Times article which claimed that the network demonstrated institutionalised right-wing bias in their broadcasting...
• The "Outfoxed" video is currently highly placed in current Amazon.com charts and includes reports from former Fox staff as well of the findings of a group formed to review every word spoken by the network over months of broadcasts...
• Fairly heady video of Fox's view of the BBC and the Hutton inquiry that described the network as displaying "a frothing-at-the-mouth anti-Americanism that was obsessive, irrational and dishonest" and that the BBC "felt entitled to lie and, when caught lying, felt entitled to defend its lying reporters and executives"...
• The view of the Fox News piece by the independent broadcasting standards body in the UK (Ofcom) finds the Fox News piece did not show "respect for the truth", did not give the BBC a chance to respond and that the personal views displayed were based upon "false evidence"...

That's your lot. Move along. Nothing to see here.
