Will Flat Panels Ever Replace CRTs?
03/20/2003 01:05 PMWhen placed next to a sleek flat-panel monitor, a cathode ray tube
(CRT) looks bulky and
archaic, as much a remnant of the recent past as a rotary-dial phone.
But do not count
the big boxes out yet. Despite their bulky appearance, CRTs trump flat
panels in some
areas.

Sponsors, speakers, panels, audience
Sponsors, speakers, panels, audience
05/07/2004 01:39 PM
Supernova and
the recently announced Web 2.0
conference are throwbacks to the priorities of old conferences, of the
eighties and nineties: sponsors, speakers, panels, audience.
Execs from high tech companies pay sponsorship fees, not
disclosed, and guarantee that the content is paid advertising and that
nothing real is said on stage. If you don't pay the sponsorship fee,
you don't get a speaking slot. If you offend a sponsor, you don't get
invited back.
These conferences are all spin, and empty
bluster.
The organization of the
conferences, with speakers and panels, guarantees that the audience
falls asleep or is frustrated, waiting to make their point until they
get to ask questions at the end of the session. Questions. What a
silly concept. Look in the room. It's pretty likely the people who
know the most are in the "audience."
By the end of the day people are in the hallway or outside,
talking to each other, and when that gets boring, talking on cell
phones.
Now that they have WiFi, at least there's an outlet for the
audience's ideas, their blogs.
But as we learned at BloggerCon II, it's totally possible to do
a conference without sponsors, without speakers, panels, without an
audience. In this model, the rooms are full to capacity and even
though there's WiFi, there was hardly any time to post to blogs. You
can steal the design
for this conference. And if you do, sign me up, I want to be there.
If you really want to get the most out of people's time, switch
models. You don't need the money from the sponsors, and you don't need
speakers, and you surely don't need an audience.

eld fears U.S. losing long-term fight against terror. The
troubling unknown, he said, is whether the extremists -- whom he
termed "zealots and despots" bent on destroying the global
system of nation-states -- are turning out newly trained terrorists
faster than the United States can capture or kill them.
"It's quite clear to me that we do not have a coherent approach
to this," Rumsfeld said at an international security
conference.

still sell PS2s and controllers, despite an initial $90 million court
order and injunction in favor of Immersion, who claims to have
invented vibrating controllers. Until the appeals process is finished,
Sony can continue to sell Playstations. I have a funny feeling that
deep-pocketed Sony will get through this fine, but just in case they
should start coming up with some new ideas to stockpile against a lean
future.

Sony Ordered to Stop PlayStation Sales
03/28/2005 12:59 PMSony said Monday that a court has upheld an earlier ruling by a
California jury and ordered the company to halt sales of its

brought by Immersion Corp. covers technology used to make a controller
to vibrate during game play.

Sony Ordered to Stop PlayStation Sales &
P2P Info
03/28/2005 04:05 PMSony was told to stop sales of it’s PlayStation console as a
judge upheld a jury ruling in California in 2004 that Sony used
Immersion’s vibrating controller technology in their
PlayStations. According to a company representative, Sony will still
be able to sell the game consoles while it attempts to appeal the
ruling. The company will also start paying Immersion royalties as
ordered.
While on the subject of legal rulings, on Tuesday Grokster and
Streamcast will be in front of the US Supreme Court to argue their
case. Both file-sharing companies contend that P2P networks can be
used to share legal content and they cannot control, and thus are not
liable for, any piracy going on. According to Betanews, The
entertainment industry, which will be represented in court by MGM
Studios, disagrees with such claims. Hollywood and the RIAA say that
P2P companies such as Grokster and StreamCast are no different from
the old Napster, and have built their business by encouraging
users to share illicit content. A federal appeals court sided
with the file sharing networks last August, stating that
Grokster and StreamCast's Morpheus had legitimate uses, even if the
majority of users are trading illegal content. But the industry
refused to give up, and the case will be decided by the nation's top
court.
In a real twist, Mark Cuban decided to put his money where his
mouth is and financially back Grokster in it’s legal fight
against MGM. Check out his blog here.

Sony Loses Patent Battle -- Told To Stop
Selling PlayStations In The US
03/28/2005 06:00 AMIf you're familiar with the word "haptics," you're familiar with the
company Immersion. They're the company that seems to own every
possible patent having to do with the haptics space, and any kind of
tactile response or force feedback device usually involves patents
that were first licensed from the company. So, in some ways, it's
pretty impressive that Sony has gotten as far as it has apparently
without licensing patents from the company. A court has found,
however, that Sony's force feedback controllers for the PlayStation
and PlayStation 2 violate Immersion's patents and not only have they
ordered the company to pay $90 million in damages, but also
told Sony it
can no longer sell either console in the US. Sony, of course,
will appeal the ruling, which will allow them to keep selling the
consoles in the meantime. Of course, this is the same Sony that keeps
insisting on
the
importance of stricter intellectual property enforcement to teach
violators a lesson. Funny what comes back to bite you...

Stop SQL Injection Attacks Before They
Stop You
09/12/2004 11:33 PMArmed with advanced server-side technologies like ASP.NET and powerful
database servers such as Microsoft® SQL Server™, developers are
able to create dynamic, data-driven Web sites with incredible ease.
But the power of ASP.NET and SQL can easily be used against you by
hackers mounting an all-too-common class of attack—the SQL injection
attack.
The basic idea behind a SQL injection attack is this: you create a
Web page that allows the user to enter text into a textbox that will
be used to execute a query against a database. A hacker enters a
malformed SQL statement into the textbox that changes the nature of
the query so that it can be used to break into, alter, or damage the
back-end database. How is this possible? Let me illustrate with an
example.

Gott im Himmel, ze cameras! There have been like
two dozen new cameras announced in the last few weeks as various
manufacturers start ramping up for Christmas, and Sony and HP are no
exception. Among the new Sonys announced today are two pocket-sized
beauties that I want right now: the T3, an update to the T1 and
Japan-only T11, a 5.1-megapixel camera that is Sony's thinnest at less
than three-quarters of an inch; and the DSC-L1, a candy bar
4.1-megapixel unit that is only 3.75-inches long. Just when I was
ready to buy a new camera Sony has to muck it all up with at least two
that really do it for me. Oh, and there's also the new DSC-V3, a
7-megapixel unit that looks mighty fine, as well.
The HPs, well, they are okay, but I'll be honest, they don't get me
all riled up as much as the two featherweight cameras from Sony do. If
they fixed the middling image quality of the T1 in the T3, that may be
my next sidearm. Living Room has a bunch of the press releases, and
I'll add to this post if any more info comes through during the
day.

While Sony Tries To Become Apple,
Samsung Tries To Become Sony
05/13/2004 03:41 AMHas anyone noticed that it's becoming increasingly difficult to tell
Samsung from Sony? It appears that almost everything Sony does,
Samsung does as well. So, it's really no surprise that a little over
a month after Sony announced plans to
build
out retail stores more for advertising than for sales,
Samsung plans to
do the same thing. Of course, while Sony says they're more
interested in using the stores for advertising, Samsung has gone one
step further. They believe so strongly that this "store" is just for
advertising that
they won't sell you anything at the store.
It's for showcasing products only. Also, a random note in the
article, but the same week that Sony and Nintendo announced their
plans for their next generation handheld gaming devices, this article
also mentions that Samsung is planning for its own N-Gage like
phone/gaming device. Apparently, the dismal failure of the N-Gage
isn't enough to scare them off.

The Ads Don't Stop
05/06/2004 07:17 AMOn Monday I stopped into the post office. The United States Postal
Service office. Federally-run. You know. The red-white-and-blue
shipping company. I was stunned to see Shrek 2 cross-marketing
everywhere. A huge orange poster describing April as national
"write-a-letter" month featured Princess Fiona swooning over a love
letter from Shrek. The jive-talking donkey winked at me from the
shipping rates/times table above the counter, which featured the quip:
'we haul it fast.' [hoho!] I guess it's an inevitable consequence
of the Postal Service being spun off as an independent business unit
that sooner or later, the spaces inside it would be sold off for
marketing dollar. It's just the last place I expect to be inundated
with 'see-our-movie' marketing but as time goes by, no space is kept
sacred from advertising. It will likely get worse. Can you see it now:
