Google designer on Yahoo! search

Google designer on Yahoo! search

Google designer on Yahoo! search 02/19/2004 11:34 AM

A Google user-interface designer has some pithy thoughts on Yahoo!'s new search product:

Google's search for 'cameras' gives a sponsored link for cameras at Buy.com at the top of the page, and eight AdWords ads down the side. The first four results make perfect sense: DP Review, Short Courses the leading publisher of photography-related eBooks, Conatax/Yashica, and Nikon USA. As you go farther down the list, there's more useful stuff.

Now try Yahoo's version. Right off the bat you have cross-sell links to products, and sponsored results that mimic web results which, along with the standard AdWordsClone ads on the right, push the first actual web search result below the fold, where most users won't even see it.

But say you do scroll down and see 'top 20 web results' (out of 27,700,000). The first one on the list is for Jersey Swimwear, USA with the blurb: "Coming soon -- Jersey swimwear for MILKDUDS.COM!"

Yahoo Search and Google

Yahoo Search and Google 02/18/2004 10:49 PM

Google-free Yahoo Search is out (via Scott Loftesness).  The interesting thing is that ranking algorithm used seems to be very similar to PageRank used by Google.  For example, I am the 11th 'Don' on both services.  I used to be the 9th but the acceleration of global warming trend dropped me down a couple of notches.

Kicked Off Of Yahoo And Google

Search Engine Death Penalty: WhenU
Kicked Off Of Yahoo And Google
05/13/2004 10:40 PM
WhenU, the adware/spyware company that already has quite a bit of controversy surrounding it for both (a) sneaking their software onto users' machines and (b) then popping up competitive ads when surfers visit websites has now been removed from both Yahoo and Google searches after it was determined that they were using tricks to boost their rankings in both. WhenU blames an outside search engine optimizer who they hired, but it does raise some issues. Considering the power that sites like Google and Yahoo have over anyone finding your site, how long will it be until we hear about a lawsuit when someone sues a search engine for kicking their site out of search results?

Secret Surveillance Warrants Up After
9/11 (AP)

AP - The number of secret surveillance warrants sought by the FBI has increased 85 percent in the past three years, a pace that has outstripped the Justice Department's ability to quickly process them.

Warrants are security measures

Warrants are security measures 05/10/2004 10:17 AM
Bruce Schneier's latest op-ed asks us to consider the warrant process -- where a cop has to show evidence and follow procedure before invading your privacy -- is itself a security measure.
What we need are corresponding mechanisms to prevent abuse. This is the proper question: "Should we allow law enforcement to use new technology without any judicial oversight, or should we demand that they be overseen and accountable?" And the Fourth Amendment already provides for this in its requirement of a warrant.

The search warrant - a technologically neutral legal requirement - basically says that before the police open the mail, listen in on the phone call or search the bit stream for key words, a "neutral and detached magistrate" reviews the basis for the search and takes responsibility for the outcome. The key is independent judicial oversight; the warrant process is itself a security measure protecting us from abuse and making us more secure.

Jersey Girl

Jersey Girl 12/26/2004 07:03 PM

Like Gigli, Jersey Girl suffered unfairly at the box office because of the whole Bennifer thing. I liked a couple of Kevin Smith's previous films but the poor acting always bothered the heck out of me (I think he and George Lucas have a similar tendency to treat actors as props (but in different ways)), but the acting in Jersey Girl was surprisingly good. And the kid in the movie was great. Like most movie children, she was a bit precocious and interacted with the rest of the characters as if she were an adult, but it worked because she was essentially standing in for her mother in the eyes of Affleck's character. Affleck has his moments as well...he can be a surprisingly good actor when he wants to be.

The New Jersey Porn Connection

The New Jersey Porn Connection 06/23/2004 04:04 PM

Link to porn site baffles N.J. governor's aides: This is kind of funny, in a perverse kind of way.

A state Commerce and Economic Growth Commission Web site link to its "business resource center" took viewers Tuesday afternoon — and maybe for much longer — to full-color, hard-core teen pornography.

Learning of the cyber snafu, high-level state executives rushed to try to shut it down. But they initially encountered confusion. The porn popped up on some computers. On others, the link went to the proper business site.

Smells like a DNS propogation issue.
