Sony VAIO U50 Review: Awful Laptop,
Great PDA

Sony VAIO U50 Review: Awful Laptop,
Great PDA
06/28/2004 09:35 PM

sony_u50_review.jpg imageIt catches eyes, that's for sure. I had forgotten to load the Sony VAIO U50 with any software before our flight home to Kansas City for the weekend, but since an unexpected storm front was blowing in from the north, we had almost two hours to kill while our plane sat, stranded on the tarmac of LaGuardia. Even scrolling through empty file systems was better than the airline magazine.

"Excuse me," said the man sitting next to me, and I turned too fast to respond, because I knew he had been staring. "What exactly is that thing, and can you play Spider Solitaire on it?"

Read the rest of my review after the jump.

Fashion Forward Nokia 6600 in Awful
Movie

kim_cell.jpg imageI didn't really want to see that new movie "Cellular" before, but after hearing that it's about "getting [viewers] to identify with the frustrations of the police officer as he attempts to track down and rescue Ms. Basinger" using a crappy Nokia cellphone, I sort of started thinking that was maybe a little too close to real life to want to have to experience vicariously. The portrayal of cellular service - including the customer service - is apparently so awful in the movie that none of the American carriers approached allowed their service to be used in the film. I wonder if Kim Basinger sort of freaks out in the movie and twitches a lot like she does in real life? I would maybe pay to watch that.

Sony's Librie e-book reader: great

Sony's Librie e-book reader: great
display, awful DRM
07/02/2004 01:11 PM
librieYuri Kageyama writes a glowing review of Sony's new ebook reader, which uses a new kind of display technology that rivals paper.I agree with Kageyama's assessment about the display technology. I played with a Librie when I was in Tokyo last month. The screen is remarkable. The display uses little balls that are painted black and white, containing the same pigments found in laser printer toner cartridges for black, and in sunblock and paint for white. Once you turn on the display and a page of text or graphics appear, it doesn't need refreshing. The only time the batteries get used is when you load a new page. (The technology was developed by a U.S. company, E-Ink.) I did notice that sometimes you could see the ghost of the previous page, especially on model I tried that had a comic book loaded on it. I wonder if that's a general problem, or if the one I played with was a dud?

I didn't Kageyama wasn't harsh enough about the hideous proprietary locked format the Librie uses for books. He wrote, "I'm not wild about buying books that self-destruct after 60 days." This self-destruct feature is sickening. Who would buy a Librie with this deadly defect built in? (Sony is making a similar mistake with its music players.) I hope somebody with a sensible DRM policy starts using these great display screens. Link

  • Reason: Pill Sham. Here's a bit of legal information that may interest Rush Limbaugh: Under Florida law, illegally obtaining more than 28 grams of painkillers containing the narcotic oxycodone—a threshold exceeded by a single 60-pill Percocet prescription—automatically makes you the worst sort of drug trafficker, even if you never sold a single pill. Even if, like Richard Paey, you were using the drugs to relieve severe chronic pain.

An overseas view of INDUCE act (aka
    INSANE act)
    06/28/2004 11:35 AM
    Ernest Miller says:
Dr. Karl-Friedrich Lenz, a professor at Aoyama Gakuin University in Japan, has a different perspective on the INDUCE Act. Of course, there must be something wrong with his translation, as Dr. Lenz believes the Act is named the "Intentionally Stopping Advances of the Nation's Economy," or INSANE Act. Anyway, he is not nearly as opposed to it as many commentators here in the US:
First of all, while it might be true that this legislation will help to make America a technological backwater, with iPods and the Internet being illegal under this legislation, depending on your perspective, that is actually a good thing. It helps Europe and Japan in the global competition with America to have strange American laws strangling research and development there, so from an international point of vie w, I can only say "go ahead".
Lenz notes that the law could use some improvements, and if these improvements were made, then, "it might be better than the Japanese approach of just arresting creators and sort out later if it was actually illegal what they did."

A Non-Loser's Guide to The Insane Clown
    Posse
    04/05/2005 11:45 PM
Friday afternoon, as I was walking into the 7-11 across the street from the Ogden theater on Colfax, I was witness to an odd sight; a huge crowd of "juggalos" (aka: fans of the Insane Clown Posse who like to paint their faces like "wicked clowns" whatever the fuck that means) gathered around Independent Records chanting "When I say dawg, you say 'woof, woof'!" after which they started chanting "Dawg!" "Woof! Woof!" and so on and so forth. After purchasing a pack of Camels and a jalapeno cheese taquito, I shook my head, and walked back to my apartment depressed. I know this is Denver and we're about twenty years behind the trends, but I still wondered "Why is the Insane Clown Posse still considered cool here?"
