Future Intel Mobile Chips to Add
Location-Based Services
06/03/2004 01:35 PM

Though it's impossible to consider without thinking of the inevitable exploits (from Big Brotherish agencies and rowdy script kiddies alike), Intel has said they are developing support within their mobile processor line to allow computers to be aware of their physical location at all times. Although nothing is set in stone yet, Intel is working with others (Microsoft, for example) to add features that would integrate simple things like, say, selection of which printer to use based on proximity into future laptops and mobile devices. Sounds okay, but also the sort of thing that will probably hit all at once as mobile phones are already gaining GPS abilities and Bluetooth short range communication -- soon all of our devices will know where you are and will be happy to tattle to each other where you're hiding, whether you like it or not.

07/08/2004 03:39 AM
The 13th IST Mobile & Wireless Communications Summit held in Lyon 27-30 June has proved to be a major forum to present results of European mobile industry initiatives. IST has succeeded in drawing attention to the launch of its « 6th framework » programme, which defines the priorities of the Mobile Industry in terms of research and development for the two years ahead. More specifically, it raises the health and safety issues arising from the rapid development of new technologies and their impact on society. On a more positive note, the “6th framework” outlines emerging marketing opportunities in the IT sector. Visions of the Mobile future and the technological challenges were addressed by speakers from Hewlett Packard, Motorola, and Philips. [PRWEB Jul 8, 2004]

Future Plans Teaser 12/05/2002 07:49 PM
Jeff Dean hinted at some future Google plans in his keynote yesterday in London: More comprehensive and fresher database Improved usability (will that be a new user interface?) Conceptual understanding (perhaps that Google will try to guess synonyms) More personalization [...] only about 3% of searches use the advanced search form so they do not spend much development dollars on it and about 10% of queries have misspellings. Anyone else have notes? (Thanks, Patrick!)...

Wireless Meshes with Its Future 03/20/2003 01:05 PM
A new wireless technology buzzword has arrived: mesh networking. Though some might write off the technology as a logical extension of wireless and IP-based routing technologies, that would be a limited view of its potential.

Wireless Future conference

Wireless Future conference 02/10/2004 02:47 AM
I'll be speaking March 13 at the Wireless Future conference in Austin, TX organized by Jon Lebkowsky and the IC2 Institute at the University of Texas. I'm really looking forward to this one. John has assembled a fabulous group of Supernova regulars discussing the disruptive potential of emerging wireless technologies, including Cory Doctorow, Joi Ito, Howard Rheingold, David Isenberg, Dave Sifry, Dewayne Hendricks, and David Weinberger. And to top it off, the event is collocated with South By Southwest Interactive, the way-cool tech conference offshoot of Austin's legendary music festival.

Register for Wireless Future ($225 now; $250 starting March 1) and you also get access to SXSWi. I hope to see some of you there.
