I apologize if you've tried to access the site in the past 12 hours or so or have tried to email me in that time, my host seems to be having problems (too often, unfortunately). I've been thinking about getting a dedicated server through RackShack but I just can't afford 100-130 dollars a month. Anyone out there in blogspace want to go halves?

I've received a lot of feedback on the new design, and I've been able to clear up bugs here and there on various browsers. Keep the reports coming, or post comments below.

TurboTax Blues

TurboTax Blues 04/16/2004 02:16 AM

With only a few hours til the tax filing deadline, I was having problem with TurboTax.  It reported no errors so I proceeded to file it electronically, but it kept saying it couldn't do it because there were errors.  So I went back and found that some field in California tax return was not supposed to be a negative number and it should be greater than the number above.  Well, the number above came from the federal side and was negative.

After an hour of going back and forth which TurboTax really sucks at (why can't it be more like a browser and let me spawn new windows and navigate back and forth?), I finally started ripping out forms and wiping out deductions until the damn thing filed without complaining.  I am paying a bit more tax than I would have otherwise, but at least it's done and over with until next year.

Firefox Blues

Firefox Blues 07/15/2004 07:10 AM

For some reason, Firefox address bar stopped working today.  It simply stopped updating and also won't accept new URLs entered into it.  Only changes I made to the system today were latest set of Microsoft security patches and Sage, a Firefox extension which Tim Bray recently mentioned.

I uninstalled Sage but the problem persisted.  So I proceeded to uninstall all the extensions and restarted.  Still dead.  So I uninstalled Firefox 0.9.1 completely and went to the Mozilla website.  Woo.  Firefox 0.9.2 was out.  So I installed it only to find the problem still there.  Hmm.  Could it be that those five Microsoft security patches I installed today somehow disabled Firefox address bar?  I doubt it because Mozilla 1.6's address bar still works.  Has Sage got too clever and messed up some Firefox settings and failed to restore it during uninstall?

I don't have the answers yet because I don't have time to dick around just so I can point a finger at Microsoft.  I am sure there will be an uproar in no time if it is true so I am going to wait and listen.  Meanwhile, I am back on IE.

Update:

After posting, I realized that Mozilla application data was still in the Documents and Settings directory.  Wiping that out fixed the address bar.  So it looks like the problem was Sage.  That's the trouble with being extension happy.

Linux VMware Blues

Linux VMware Blues 09/15/2004 01:49 AM

If you are running a Linux guest under VMware like me and my blog's hyperlinks are green instead of blue, turn on subpixel font rendering to get the blues.

FYI, I am running RedHat 9 under VMware running on XP, primarily for development and testing.  For example, I needed to write a milter so I initially wrote a C++ version using Eclipse running under RH9 VMware guest.  The milter was talking to sendmail server running inside the same virtual machine.  Eclipse CDT running inside the VM was rather difficult to work with so rewrote the milter in pure Java using Eclipse running on XP.

To debug, I configured the sendmail server running inside the VM to invoke the pure Java milter running under Eclipse debugger outside the VM.Then I sent both plain text and multipart MIME messages using Evolution, running inside the VM, as well as Outlook, running on another machine, to the sendmail server inside the VM which in turn invoked the milter running outside the VM.

While all this might be confusing to some, it worked amazingly well.

I'm on Ryze. I'm on LinkedIn. I never touched Friendster. For some reason, Orkut appealed to me. Perhaps its the "in affiliation with Google" tagline? It's getting to the point where we need a Trillian for these types of sites. FriendFan is coming. Microsoft already has Wallop. When will it ever end? How many friends does one really need? Infinity (plus one). Won't you be my neighbor?...

Need a new gizmo for your pet Gizmo? OK, that was a weak stab at comedy with a less than subtle poke at the ’80s movie Gremlins. Unlike the nasty little green dudes in that film, this Gremlin works to download music for you from Wi-Fi connections. The true name for this mobile device is the MusicGremlin, and the device’s manufacturer is in the process of offering their users access to 500,000 songs once the licensing goes through.
