It may be madness to praise Python on a PHP blog, but I just have to add a pointer to one of the most amazing pieces of software I have every seen. Pysco is an JIT compiler for Python that is (nearly) totally transparent. We are using Python for some data mining apps, and the following 2 lines speeded up our code by 250%:
import psyco
psyco.full()
There is an even more amazing post where the author of Psyco discusses Python is faster than C because a JIT compiler can better handle polymorphic data types.

Apparently Pysco will be rolled into the official Python release when it becomes more mature and cross-platform (it runs well only on x86 at the moment). It would be wonderful if PHP moves in this direction in the long run, whether by running on top of Parrot or another JIT.

Forever in New York City

Forever in New York City 04/09/2004 04:06 PM

Forever: A NovelWhile on vacation I read Forever: A Novel by Pete Hamill. It was The Count of Monte Cristo meets Interview with the Vampire, which sounds cheesier than it was. It was perfect beach reading, and I enjoyed a great deal of it. It got me so much more curious about the City's history and made me more determined than ever to dig into Gotham: A History of New York City to 1898.

Perhaps the most interesting bit for me was actually after the book. My edition contained an interview with the author in which he talked about completing the book on September 10, 2001. And then of course, needing to go back and re-write a good chunk of the end. After all, his protagonist had supposedly experienced all of Manhattan's major events from about 1740 on. I imagine the process must have been difficult for Mr. Hamil. The "present day" world where his novel ended no longer existed, and ceased to exist the morning after he put down his pen.

Wireless To Blanket All Of New York City

Wireless To Blanket All Of New York City 08/22/2004 01:12 PM
New York City is preparing to go fully wireless by January, 2005. The deal is currently being finalized between New York City authorities and six technology companies. To strengthen coverage and signal, 18,000 new lamp post-based antennas will be installed virtually everywhere in the five burroughs that make up New York City.

The plan has already come under fire by local officials concerned what the new antennas will do to people's health, now and in the long run. Local activist John Campos of Queens, NY, says, "Within where I live, over a mile radius, there are over 300 antennas already," said Mr Campos, pointing at a cluster of small masts on a rooftop across the street. "What happens if in 20 years, there's even a minor adverse reaction to human beings?"

Peter Vallone Jr is a Queens council member and chairman of the city's safety committee who also shares Mr. Campos's concerns. "The city was in the papers when I first came out against this, saying there's less radiation than from a microwave (oven) from these antennas, and that may be true," said councilman Vallone. "But nobody runs a microwave 24 hours a day, seven days a week, outside their bedroom door when they are sleeping. That's why it's important we study this," he added.

Commissioner Menchini addresses these concerns by stating, "We've had industry experts come in and advise us on this and everything I've heard, from our health commissioner to the industry experts, says there's no health risk associated with these antennas and these devices."

York City subway
05/20/2004 10:00 AM

Tomorrow night (Thursday) at the New York Public Library there's a free lecture on The Development of the New York City Subway System that sounds interesting.

Transit Historian Peter Derrick will discuss why New York City needed an extensive rapid transit system, the political and financial difficulties in getting new lines built, and the impact the subways had on the growth of the city and the well being of its population. The focus will be on the largest stage of subway expansion, the 1913 Dual System of Rapid Transit, under which most of the existing IRT and BMT lines were constructed.

Free. From 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM.Science, Industry and Business Library, 188 Madison Avenue, New York.

New York City art opening: Eric Paulos 09/13/2004 10:31 AM
David Pescovitz: BB pal Eric Paulos has work in Passage of Mirage, a group exhibition opening tomorrow night (9/14) at Manhattan's Chelsea Art Museum. Paulos and the Experimental Interaction Unit will debut Limelight, an ambient display that illuminates our culture's anxieties about terrorism, disaster, and other potentially-catastrophic threats.
Limelight
(Feb 2003) 039_small1"Limelight is a personal tactical system that removes the burden of anxiety associated with our continuous worry of emerging global and local threatening conditions. Using a collection of embedded sensors, local measurements of radioactivity and RF signals are continuously scanned for hostile patterns. Similarly, remote precursors of threats such as the appearance and frequency of specific keywords and discussions by various military, news, and independent sources are continuously monitored. The collected data is carefully analyzed and summarized as a visual output where various threats are mapped across a spectrum of illumined and pulsing colors."
