WWIT: Fast interpretation

WWIT: Fast interpretation 06/17/2005 03:43 PM
Parrot is, as an interpreter goes, pretty damn fast. Not as fast as it could possibly be, a lot faster than many interpreters at what it does, and can be faster still. (Heck, you can enable optimizations when building Parrot and get a good boost -- they're off right now since it's a pain to pull a core file for an optimized binary into a debugger and do anything useful with it) A lot of thought went into some of the low-level design specifically to support fast interpretation. There are a couple of reasons. The first, and probably biggest...

Free pizza, or at least the hope of free

Free pizza, or at least the hope of free
pizza
03/14/2005 04:38 PM
College kids these days have lots of things we didn’t have when I was in college—computers, the web, iPods, massive credit card debt—but we had one thing they don’t: if pizza wasn’t delivered in 30 minutes or less, it was free.

On any weekend night—okay, any night really since I attended a liberal arts college and I tended to hang out with people who weren’t exactly model students (I don’t think there were any, actually)—we’d have a small quantity of money to spend on beer and pizza. If the pizza was free, that meant more money for beer.

The amount of beer you could get for the price of a pizza was significant.

It was still the Cold War then, with the possibility of nuclear war and all that. But it was not a time without hope: there was always the hope of free pizza.

Of course, eventually they figured out that pizza delivery drivers were getting into accidents too often, so they got rid of the free pizza policy.

To this day I’m still a little let down whenever I order pizza and they tell me it will be there in “about 45 minutes” or whatever. Oh, man, where’s the fun in “about 45 minutes.” And what if it comes in 50 minutes? Nothing special.

On the other hand, these days I eat Pagliacci’s instead of Domino’s. Seattle-ites, you know what I’m saying.

Why The United States Just Doesn't Get
The United Nations
06/22/2005 02:41 AM

For years I have been amazed as I’ve listened to people here in the United States demonstrate their complete ignorance of the purpose and tremendous value of the United Nations, even to the point of our country not paying dues to the organization. Ambassador to the United Nations havs often been viewed as second-class or B-level diplomatic job and with the current presidential perspective, the UN has become a troublesome entity and the appointment of…

A Passion for Pizza

A Passion for Pizza 07/05/2004 11:02 AM
I have decided that pizza is the perfect food, loved the world over. Done correctly, it includes most of the food groups according to Apache Pizza; cheese, meat, veggies and bread. Someone once said of pizza, "Pizza is a lot like sex. When it's good, it's really good. When it's bad, it's still pretty good." Being USian , I'm without time to create my own dough, squash my own tomatoes, or kill my own cow to create a truly mad pizza. There are alternatives in the quest for the pizza of world domination, though.

Hungry for some pizza, but can't stand all that pesky human interaction you have to put up with ordering it on the phone? Pizza Party is your answer:

Pizza Party is a free text based software package for ordering pizza, or for throwing pizza parties.

Pizza Party has many features to make ordering pizza easy:

* Can order pizza with only a few keystrokes.
* Can save pizza preferences.
* Can use batch files for ordering many pizzas.
* Has easy to use flags for ordering different toppings.
* Runs on most UNIX-like operating systems.
* Supports most currently popular topings like "mushrooms", and "pepperoni"!
* Unattended / background operation.
* Pizza Party is distributed under the GNU General Public License.

Since it's released under the GPL, does that mean I have to share my pizza too?

Let's see if I can tempt you laggardly louts out of your GUI nest. How about some pizza? There. I knew that would do it. If anything on earth has the kryptonite-like strength required to melt those GUI shackles, it's pizza. Domino's pizza in this case, delivered to your door. So welcome back to the command line interface, and enjoy your stay.

ACLU Pizza memeflow 02/01/2005 08:52 PM
A couple of days ago my sister cc'd me on the ACLU Pizza movie -- a digital identity nightmare done as a Flash animation. "Very interesting," she wrote to her friends, "and probably not too far from the truth." I'd seen this movie a while back, so I pondered for a moment about the ongoing effect it might be having and then moved on. Then today it came back to me, via Phil Windley, via Kim Cameron, via Future Salon. I wondered how this particular meme has been flowing through the collective mind. So I took a picture of that: ...

The Success Of Online Pizza Ordering

The Success Of Online Pizza Ordering 05/19/2004 05:48 PM
Back in 2000, when we first heard about the concept of online pizza ordering, we were skeptical. Admittedly, it wasn't so much the idea of ordering pizza online, but the fact that someone wanted to create a "pizza portal" where you could order from whatever pizza maker you wanted. However, the general concept of ordering pizza online has really taken off - though, mostly directly from the websites of the pizza places - rather than in a competitive portal. By 2002, it looks like those individual pizza places had started to figure it out and many more were offering the ability to order online. More recently, they've started adding tie-ins with other services, such as the ability to get a free DVD with each order. Now, however, the latest reports show that online pizza ordering can be quite lucrative for a pizza place. One such popular pizza joint is doing 10 to 12% of their business through their online interface with some shops hitting 18%. Again, though, it turned out to be an issue of execution. The article discusses how they were careful to make the online interface very user friendly.
