Free Range Conversations
Free Range Conversations
02/01/2005 10:09 PMBesides the excellent content, it’s fun reading Karen
Schneider’s Free Range
Librarian blog these days because she’s discovering the
sense of community and the unexpected level of conversation you get when you blog with
open comments. I say “unexpected” because you never expect
anyone else to really care enough to take the time to enter a comment,
and yet it turns out a lot of people care enough. I never,
ever anticipated that side of it, and it’s become one
of the things I really love about my blog. Trackback fills in a whole
other side of the conversation, the cross-blog one.
And
that’s what library organizations don’t get –
conversation. That’s why ALA,
LITA,
ILA, and other major institutions
don’t blog, certainly not with open comments. Even this
seems beyond their reach right now. But that’s what we need
to open up – a conversation with the outside world, as
well as amongst ourselves.
Bonus FRL quote (emphasis is
mine): “Donning my lii.org
hat, we had a remarkable education when we added RSS feeds.
Now people find us through the blog-finding agents.
Librarians, including me, suck at marketing, but by adding RSS feeds,
we stumbled onto a way for the audience to find us, instead of the
glacially slow process of dissemination through our existing
readership.”

Technolog: Home on the Wi-Fi range
12/22/2004 01:48 AMSetting up a wireless network can unearth a whole range of problems.
Well, that didn't take long. Just three months after moving into my
new flat, I've finally got my wireless network up and running reliably
again. Wireless is a funny combination of anticipation, pleasure and
pain, not necessarily in that order. It starts with the anticipation:
all those wires you can get rid of; thoughts of putting the printer in
the airing cupboard or somewhere else suitably inconspicuous; the
ability to surf the Web on the laptop while you sit on the sofa.
Everything clean, tidy and clutter-free. It's a marketing Nirvana of
healthy-living, Habitat-furniture-buying, beautiful twenty-somethings,
relaxing in the bay window with a pair of khakis, a chai latté and a
King Charles spaniel while booking their next trip to Krakow on
Lastminute.com.

WSJ Exposes Wi-Fi Range Woes
03/06/2004 01:49 AMWall Street Journal talks to home Wi-Fi users who can't seem to get
the range they need even on small homes: It's a growing problem, and
well explored in this article, that home users are finding that
Wi-Fi's limited range can't cover an entire ranch-style home, much
less a big apartment--or one with thick walls. The article mentions
several solutions, all of which involve additional access points or
devices that promise more range. It misses just one of my favorite
solutions: HomePlug. HomePlug lets you run 14 Mbps over home
electrical wiring, and even has a Wi-Fi access point version to extend
a network into areas that a signal otherwise wouldn't reach....

Slab
City, CA "is not so sinister as it is a strange, forlorn
quarter of America. It is a town that is not really a town, a former
training grounds with nothing left but the concrete slabs where the
barracks stood. [...]
The land belongs to the state, but the state, like the law, does not
bother, and so the Slabs have become a place to park free. More than
3,000 elderly people settle in for the winter, in a pattern that dates
back at least 20 years." [NYT Reg Req]
