The Brazilian wave

The Brazilian wave 06/30/2004 02:45 AM

Aside from the hype and deart h of useful ideas, social software has exposed some interesting trends that I didn't know existed. I know I'm not alone in this, but I'm fascinated by a trend that has been going on for about a year and shows no signs of stopping: Brazilians are dominating social software networks.

I guess it makes sense when you think about it. They've got a country with fairly free laws that promote creativity. While they're generally poor on a per capita basis, they have the largest online population in South America.

Recently, Orkut put them neck and neck with Americans on the system and new language tools were added so you could basically cruise the site entirely within groups that posted in just Brazilian Portuguese, or just English. Fotolog had the famous case of Brazilian cam girls competing neck and neck with American photographers last summer. I suspect even with pricing changes at Fotolog, the Brazilians won out in terms of membership numbers since then. Ever since Globo's Blogger install launched a couple years ago, the service has skyrocketed in user numbers. T his person claims Brazil is likely to be the second largest group of bloggers after Americans.

Thanks to the enthusiasm of Brazilian users and the democratic nature of these networks, you see Brazil outpacing the participation and number of Americans. The virtual world is relatively new and doesn't have many limitations beyond the obstacles of getting online in the first place, so the world is on an even playing field so to speak. I find it fascinating that in this new, more open, and more equal environment, Brazil is doing so well. I don't know what it means for the future of Brazil or America, both online and offline, but it's certainly an interesting trend worth watching.

Brazilian open microorganism bank

Brazilian open microorganism bank 03/26/2005 05:13 AM
Cory Doctorow: The Brazilian government is funding an open collection of indigineous microrganisms that will stave off the practice of foreign companies coming to the south, taking what grows there, and locking it away in patents that the countries of origin can't afford to license.
The microbe bank — dubbed the Brazilian Collection of Environmental and Industrial Microorganisms — is housed at the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) and was inaugurated on 24 February.

''We intend to put this collection at the service of the scientific and industrial community, by preserving, identifying, maintaining and distributing these microorganisms,'' says biologist Lara Sette, the collection's curator...

Specimens in the 'public access deposit' will be available to public and private institutions to use for research or teaching. The 'safety deposit' will house specimens whose identity and related information are kept confidential and to which access will be restricted.

The third section will include specimens deposited to satisfy Brazilian legal requirements, which state that a sample of any biological material moved between public or private institutions, nationally or internationally, must be deposited in an institution accredited by the Ministry of Environment.

Vintage Girly pinups 08/31/2004 03:36 PM
Xeni Jardin: Why is it that the women in these oldschool cheesecake illos always appear shocked, surprised, and totally unprepared to perform even the most mundane of tasks? The expression is, like, "Heavens! Someone's just crammed a red-hot poker up my butt!" I mean, take the image shown here, from Art Frahm. Maybe she's a midcentury bimbo wearing loose drawers, right? OR, maybe she's an undercover leet hacker and card-carrying MENSA member. Having just finished a phone phreak session in this public booth, she disguises her sinister, geeky hijinks with a bag full of carbs and a sight gag to divert that sneaky federal agent in black. "Smile now, narq," reads her invisibly eeevil thought-balloon, "1 PWN3D J00!" Anyway, here's an extensive online gallery of digital babes from yesteryear. Robot Combat Aircraft Update 04/01/2005 01:55 PM
The Swirling Brain sent us a couple of new stories on military UAVs. The first, a Tech Central Station article, provides a general overview of why the military is so interested in unmanned combat air vehicles (UCAVs) and has links to the latest developments. Among other things it points out that 80% of the useful life of modern manned miltary aircraft is devoted to pilot training rather than fighting. Meanwhile, a St. Louis Post-Dispatch article says that Boeing is combining their UCAV program with their traditional weapons programs. At Boeing, robots are no longer considered as unusual, just another part of standard military hardware.

Aircraft carrier (deommissioned ) for sale.
Vehicle Description: This maybe the first ever aircraft carrier (decommissioned 2001) available for auction at EBAY ! But the auction was delisted not long ago due to accusation wrongly made by a suspicious customer. We showed evidence that this vessel is DECOMMISSIONED and therefore not Ordanance. We are shipbroker and not arms dealer. We shipbrokers do not have the ownership of the vessels we sell, as none of the shipbrokers does, just as your real estate broker cannot ask you to transfer the title of your house to him before he start selling propery for you.
Current bid: US $6,000,000.00.
