Town Sold On eBay Finally Sold For
Real... But Not On eBay
05/21/2004 02:35 AMBack in 2002 there was a tremendous amount of hype when Bridgeville,
the small (mostly deserted) California town was
put up
for sale on eBay. It eventually sold in an auction for $1.8
million - and got a tremendous amount of press attention. The only
problem: the $1.8 million bid was a hoax. A whole year went by and
the owners of the "town" sheepishly admitted that
the
buyer (and his money) never showed up. Now, however, the town has
been sold again -
but not on eBay, and back down at its original asking
price of $700,000. Even with the failure of the actual sale to go
through, though, people still remember that you can "sell a town on
eBay," contributing to the
use of
eBay as a PR platform beyond just its ability to match buyers and
sellers.
Google Looking to Expand?
Google Looking to Expand?
09/03/2002 01:39 PMSV Business Journal: Google eyes larger space. "Google Inc. has signed
a letter of intent to occupy 190,000 square feet of office space in
Mountain View with the possibility of expanding to 300,000 square feet
in the future, according to industry sources. It is the largest
proposed lease this year in Silicon Valley [...]" When I visited
Google it was extremely crowded, so I'm not surprised they're picking
up more space while it's cheap. Reuters: Google Hires CFO, Key Post
for Growth. "The company hired George Reyes, 48, a former financial
officer at Sun Microsystems Inc. At Sun, Reyes worked next to Google
Chief Executive Eric Schmidt, who was then the chief technology
officer." These stories taken together, it does sound like somethings
up over there....
Ferry Wi-Fi to Expand
Ferry Wi-Fi to Expand
08/27/2004 01:31 PMThe trial deployment of Wi-Fi networks covering Puget Sound ferry
routes will be expanded: The initial deployment covered one route,
which Glenn trialed and covered for the New York Times. This fall, a
couple of popular routes out of Seattle will get the service. The
networks include a switch and APs from Chantry Networks. The ferry
system expects to charge for the service and they can likely expect a
good number of customers. Glenn reported that the boats that will
initially have the service carry 12 million passenger trips per year.
One of the routes, Seattle to Bremerton, is a 60 minute passage.
Commuters who make the trip each day will likely be willing to pay to
be productive during their two hours on the boat every day....

Verizon to Expand EV-DO
09/23/2004 01:03 PMVerizon Wireless said it will introduce its 3G service to 11 markets
starting next week: In what appears to be a direct hit against Wi-Fi,
Verizon also said it would launch its EV-DO service in 20 airports
around the country. A recent report from TeleAnalytics showed that the
use of Wi-Fi in airports has grown by more than 350 percent in a
six-month period. It appears that Verizon is looking to capture a bit
of that demand for wireless Internet access. However, its service
still costs $80 a month while most Wi-Fi access charges are
significantly less....
