On the avoidance of harm...

On the avoidance of harm...

On the avoidance of harm... 03/13/2003 10:16 AM

There's some fascinating stuff around about the relationship of depressive illness to strategies of harm avoidance:

Clinical depression is associated with two modulations occurring simultaneously and chronically, dysphoria and the generalized stress response. Dysphoria is a modulation that is part of the harm perception/avoidance axis. This is an emotion we all feel when we perceive a futility in our current behavior and experience disappointment. In contrast, we experience anger and aggression when the disappointment is perceived as being caused by an external source. When the disappointment causes dysphoria, the modulation shift increases behavioral inhibition, increases anticipation of harm, increases harm avoidance, increases introspection, decreases exploration of the environment, decreases reactivity to external stimuli, decreases appetite for food and decreases sexual appetite.

In short, it coordinates functions that allow us to retreat, introspect and to redirect our efforts in a more effective direction. In this instance, dysphoria facilitates adaptation to disappointment. [mentalheal thandillness.com]

I like that. Dysphoria faciliates adaptation to disappointment. Lots of interesting things fall out of investigations like these, but this sense of harm avoidance is the one that interests me most - that the depressive personality and the introverted personality are heavily connected. That the wallflower reacts to disappointment, attributed internally. Fascinating stuff.

strikefinder.jpg imageBy detecting and processing electrical activity from lightning strikes, the Insight StrikeFinder helps pilots to avoid dangerous weather that can turn a small aircraft into a aluminum coffin. Compiling and interpolating data from thousands of strikes "gleaned from the background noise," the StrikeFinder lets pilots determine if that impending storm cloud is really as dangerous as it might seem, preventing unnecessary detours that might take them unnecessarily off course.

The StrikeFinder is available in two models - the new model with an ultra-bright LED display can be had for just $4,700, while the original models are a relative bargain at $3,900. (Thanks, Rob!)

Wired News Discovers The Tools Of
Registration Avoidance

Wired News Discovers The Tools Of
Registration Avoidance
07/20/2004 11:16 AM
We've explained over and over again why newspapers that think they need to force users to register to view their paper are making a big mistake. They're shrinking their ad inventory, pissing off the readers they do have and getti ng dirty useless data on the registrations they are getting. While many newspapers claim that their audience levels have reached the same levels as they were before they put in registration, shouldn't that make them wonder how big they would be if they had no registration at all? Instead of registrations, shouldn't they be looking to give their readers something of value? Anyway, for those of us who read an awful lot of news sites and get constantly hung up by annoying registration required sites, Wired News has put together an article of tools people use to get around registrations. Most regular news surfers probably use all of these pretty frequently, but they include services like BugMeNot and Mailinator, both of which I find myself using on a daily basis. Obviously, the decision is up to the sites themselves if they want to include registration, but it shows a decided lack of understanding of what makes the web work.

Self-he lp equals self-harm? Are self-help books harmful rather than helpful? This article argues that dissatisfaction with one's abilities and achievements will not not be helped by affirmations of self-worth. Nor will we succeed in coping with the bitter feelings for those who have wronged us by practing the "anger therapy" of slamming a punching bag. [More Inside]

Forget Harm, Mobile Phones Help Kids
Think Clearly?
09/23/2004 03:21 AM
Every month or so, yet another study comes out that says mobile phone radiation either does, or does not, cause some sort of bodily harm, often in the form of cancer. Each study is trumpeted by the press as the definitive study on the subject, only to have that view completely turned around a month later. That's why we tend not to write about those sorts of studies any more (and, yes, there was one earlier this week). However, the head of the PTA in the UK is now claiming that mobile phones help kids think clearly. He's quoted as saying: "From a perspective of pupil performance, it can enhance things, because that heating effect actually improves the neuron transfers between neural pathways, and therefore your thinking ability goes up." This, of course, seems to go well beyond what any study has -- though, the guy in question claims a nameless British scientist told him this, so, obviously, it must be true.

Why Requiring Registration Does More

Why Requiring Registration Does More
Harm Than Good For News Sites
02/12/2004 05:00 PM
We've been discussing news site registration lately, and Digital Deliverance has a piece where they explain why it's likely to backfire for almost all sites who try it. As we were just saying last week, sites that require registration and/or demographic info tend to get many fewer visitors and a ton of bogus data. As the Digital Deliverance piece points out, most sites aren't even doing anything with that dirty data - so it's completely useless. They're getting fewer visitors and bad data they don't even use for any reasonable purpose. This certainly doesn't help them get more advertising, but the fewer readers does mean they'll get less advertising. Doesn't seem like such a smart strategy - and yet more sites seem to be doing it every day.
