Iraqi heavy metal band

Iraqi heavy metal band 08/18/2004 12:23 PM
Looks like they've found those weapons of mass destruction. WSJ article about Iraqi heavy metal outfit Acrassicauda, and what life is like trying to obliterate audiences with satanic soundwaves after the fall of Saddam.
The members of Acrassicauda honed their English by singing along to black-market Megadeth and Metallica CDs. They developed their stage moves by copying what they saw on pirated videotapes of American rock concerts. Now they're learning a different lesson: the difficulties of reviving culture and entertainment in a society ripped apart by war.

The four members of Acrassicauda, which means Black Scorpion in Latin, hope they can prove just as resilient. The young men -- Mr. Talal, bassist Faris al-Lateef, drummer Marwan Mohammad Riyak and guitarist Tony Aziz -- met as high-school students and formed the band, along with another member, in 2000. Scions of prominent families, they were drawn together by their love of Western heavy-metal bands like Slayer and Judas Priest, which appealed to their feelings of isolation and disillusionment.

"It's about feeling powerless and lonely and wanting to scream out because no one else is paying attention to what you're feeling," says Mr. Lateef, 23, who has spiky hair, a goatee and tinted sunglasses that he wears indoors. "The songs were sung by Americans but they could easily have been written by us as Iraqis."

Cookie Monster Tribute Heavy Metal Band 05/26/2004 10:20 AM
BoingBoing reader Greg confesses, "I found this site at 2:30 in the morning, so it might be less funny in the light of day. It is a speed metal sesame street cover band. The singer actually sounds like cookie monster too." Snip from website:
Cookie Mongoloid is Sesame Speed Metal! See the Cookie Mongoloid in all his blue, furry, googly-eyed glory backed by the baddest of gender mixed metal bands as they decimate and regurgitate your childhood favorites in an abrasive metal wrath. See their harem of gothic gyrators, the Cookies, demonstrate such elemental concepts as up and down in a blaze of lights, smoke and pyrotechnic cookie shrapnel.

What's that you say? You came to BoingBoing to find a link to a Brazilian heavy metal band that performs covers of videogame music? Well, that is good. Because "nino" from the Brazilian band MegaDriver says
"We have released two albums. "Metal Beast: Rise From Your Grave!" A tribute to the game Altered Beast, launched by Sega in 1988. The album contains the complete soundtrack from the game recreated in Heavy-Metal style. And "Metal Axe," A tribute to the game Golden Axe, launched by Sega in 1989. The band have also released an emulator project called "Metal Mame", based on the most popular Arcade emulator, MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator). With "Metal Mame" the fans now can play the original Arcade game with their entire soundtrack remixed by the MegaDriver band. At the band's website there is also available their first "Demo CD", "PUSH START BUTTON", with classic songs from "Castlevania", "Streets Of Rage", "Top Gear", "Street Fighter", etc.

If you have ever tried to create a hard rock or heavy metal song with Apple’s GarageBand or pro Logic application, you may have found yourself scrolling endlessly through melodic drum beats more suited to a Pop song than a hard pounding metal riff. If that’s the case, Double Bass Mania, a new release by Beta Monkey on Thursday, may be just what you’ve been waiting for.

Metal Rubber

Metal Rubber 08/13/2004 11:04 AM

sci0804skin_A_423.jpg imageA new material called "Metal Rubber" may find its way into gadgets of the future due to its unique ability to be stretched, heated, and generally abused while still conducting electricity - and still able to snap back into form when the bending and smacking is over. Apparently the vendor NanoSonic is being inundated with requests to use the material, which is currently being produced via a painstaking process that builds up the material one layer of molecules at a time.

Our dreams of the Terminator condom may finally be realized. (Thanks, Aram!)

Metal Storm Limited, the Australian company that developed a pioneering fire-by-wi re weapons system, will soon be demonstrating a small unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to Department of Defense officials to prove the technology's potential as part of a remotely controlled weapon. The UAV being used is the Dragonfly DP-4X helicopter, which was designed and built by Dragonfly Pictures Inc (DPI) for use as a remote aerial intelligence gathering and reconnaissance vehicle, but combined with the light weight Metal Storm armament, this could become a key component in future battles.

Our affordable and versatile Dragonfly DP-4X is being prepared for riskier and more offensive missions to combat many of the new threats that defy traditional battlefield tactics.

How cool would it be to put a gun on a remote control helicopter! With a live video feed too!

Released PHP 5 compliant MetaL engine 05/12/2004 01:25 AM
A new revision of the MetaL engine that is compliant with PHP 5 was released. Several classes that compose the different modules of the MetaL compiler engine were fixed to make object cloning work under PHP 5 in parts of the code where object copying was intentional. These fixes are important because they make all MetaL engine applications ready for use with PHP 5. These applications include Metastorage, a Data Access Object (DAO) classes generator tool.

Updated brushed metal guidelines

Updated brushed metal guidelines 11/06/2003 02:45 PM
As reported by Michael Tsai, Apple has updated the Human Interface Guidelines on the issue of metal windows. It is now suggested that any window that “provides a source list to navigate information—for example, iTunes or the Finder” can be a metal window.

The first thing I think of is that NetNewsWire could then use a metal window, since it provides a source list.

The second thing I think is: no way.

The guidelines also say, “Don’t use the brushed metal look indiscriminately. Although it works well for some types of applications, some applications appear too heavy when using this look.”

I would rewrite that to say: “Don’t use the brushed metal look at all. Although some applications (such as iTunes and the Finder) use it, they all look too heavy when using this look.”

Intelligent people may disagree, of course. (And so I point to Unsanity’s Metallifizer.)

Attakus Metal Collection : The Concept 12/04/2003 11:53 AM
As previously reported, Attakus will be including Star Wars sculpts in their Metal range. Figurines will be between 4 cm and 12 cm tall and will have a non-removable base that will serve as scenery. A diorama in resin to display all the statues is also in study but has not yet received the design approval of Lucasfilm. The concept is very similar to their Peter Pan set but with accurate sculpts. First finished prototypes are expected in April 2004 and statues should be available at retail in September 2004. Thanks to the great staff of Attakus for the infos.
