Classic Gamer #2 is online

Classic Gamer #2 is online 07/06/2004 01:33 PM
The second issue of Classic Gamer magazine is out. CM is a lush, web-only hymn to the lost games of the 8-bit Golden Age, well-written and lavishly illustrated with images from classic game ads and other bumpf.

I would include a quote here to show you how nice this mag is, but the authors have opted to turn on PDF's ineffectual "protection," which keeps me from copying and pasting unless I go look up a crack, something I can't be bothered doing. Pretty regrettable -- and inexplicable -- decision. 7.6MB ZIPped PDF Link (Thanks, Cav!)

Matt Gallant is probably the only graduate of the United States Military Academy to have fully paid off a two-story house in Animal Crossing. He has contributed game reviews to GameSpot and GameSpy, and has contributed greatly to the overall interactive entertainment dialectic on his personal website. He lives in Dallas solely for the purpose of not having to roadtrip to QuakeCon each year.

The Life Of A Professional Video Gamer

The Life Of A Professional Video Gamer 02/10/2004 01:27 PM
We've been following the trend of video games to be treated more and more like sporting events, and now News.com is runni ng an interview with a professional video gamer, who is making pretty good money at it. The money comes both from winning tournaments and from sponsorships. However, he's now trying to take it a step further, and is going to start selling his own computers that are designed to the specs he likes. The interview reads like a typical confident (ok, cocky) athlete, talking about how great he is. He compares himself to Michael Jordan a few times and talks about how great he is at video games - but then talks about how much more sportsmanlike he is than other players. One interesting thing, is that he points out that part of his training involves real exercise: running and aerobics to try to keep his reflexes sharp. It's still interesting to watch video gaming morph into a spectator sport. As it does, the prizes are getting bigger, and it's getting a lot more attention. Of course, I wonder how many parents are happy about their kids growing up to be professional Quake players instead of professional baseball players.

Online Gamer Wins Back Goods From
Virtual Theft

Online Gamer Wins Back Goods From
Virtual Theft
12/19/2003 01:02 PM
There's been a ton of discussion in the last few months about how the law applies as it crosses over the real/virtual barrier. The biggest question seems to be whether or not someone can be charged for stealing virtual items in an online game. Especially in cases where such items can be resold for real money, is it really theft, or is it "just a game"? What if the whole point of the game is to attack others and steal their stuff? There isn't a particularly easy way to answer these questions, though anyone creating an online game might want to think about it, as their "terms of service" are likely to act as a de facto Constitution for the world. Over in China, though, the first decision has been made on such a case and a video game company has been told to return the goods lost to a player when someone else hacked his account. The guy tried to find out the identity of the hacker, but was denied, and then sued the gaming company for money. The court's ruling sounds fairly reasonable. It looks like they aren't making the company pay, but are telling them to restore the items the player lost.

artifact duplication dispute
04/28/2004 10:20 AM
A Chinese gamer who bought a sword that was deleted by the game-host because it had been duplicated by the seller is suing the game-host to reinstate his sword and apologise. As Terra Nova's Dan Hunter says, "Virtual property, duping, and fraud. Heaven."
After many hours of playing the game, he earned 140 million units of game money, which he spent buying a powerful sword from another player through an online trading platform provided by the operator in November.

On November 16, he found the sword had been deleted from his account. After contacting Optisp several times, he was told that the sword was deleted because it was illegally duplicated.

He is asking the court to order Optisp to give back his sword, which he estimates is worth 1,000 yuan (US$120) in real money, and apologize.

Can You Fine Me Now?

Can You Fine Me Now? 08/31/2004 01:21 PM
If you thought New York City's ban on using a mobile phone at any kind of performance (with its $50 fine) was a bit much, you might want to avoid the libraries in Huntington Beach, California. You can now ge t fined up to $1,000 for using your phone in the library. Admittedly, that's only for your third strike. The first offense is $250, the second $500. They had considered a 6 month jail term but decided, all in all, that might be a bit much.

A fine day to die

A fine day to die 06/23/2004 02:47 AM
BATHORY mastermind Thomas "Quorthon" Forsberg has passed away. A fine day to die? Mayhaps but maybe also too soon at a young 39. One might think that those interested in the black stuff would already know of this passing, but like Elton John said, "...then again, no" because I just found out tonight. So there it is, if any of you are listening to "Blood, Fire, Death" while at a grim and blasphemous desk job like me but have missed the news. Reviews are here of the "band" that took off in a grim way from Slayer and Venom and spawned a grip of younger Scandanavian agents like these and them. (mild warning: when reading about black metal you will no doubt read about some people with anti-social ideas.)

Five and doing just fine, PII

Five and doing just fine, PII 07/07/2004 11:35 AM

Oh, and here's another story about Isaac I really like:

Every week my wife takes him to a nearby nature center where he learns about all sorts of things, including rocks, bugs, birds, and - on one occasion - the phases of the moon. At the end of this class, the teacher handed out a black-and-white line drawing of the moon and asked the kids color it.

Walking around the classroom, the teacher was pleased to see so many kids using their yellow crayons to color the drawing. When she reached Isaac's desk, though, she stopped and looked concerned. You see, rather than carefully coloring the moon, Isaac had grabbed a handful of crayons and attacked the drawing with random slashes of brown, green, gray and purple. The puzzled teacher asked him what he was doing, and Isaac - clearly happy with his creation - replied that he was drawing the inside of the moon.

I'm happy to report, too, that my three-year-old daughter, Hannah, likewise shows plenty of signs of thinking for herself. Not too long ago she was gleefully drawing a picture which looked sort of - but not entirely - like someone's foot. I sat down next to her and asked what she was drawing, and she grinned and replied, "an evil toe!" then started laughing maniacally.

Okay, so maybe that's more cause for alarm than hope, but I'm still proud of her.
