Polar Bear Clubs have become a traditional way to greet the new year. The original US club seems to be in Atlantic City, NJ, where winter bathers have been taking the plunge on New Years Day for over 100 years. Some say that the plunges are rooted in the Nordic tradition of saunas and cold water bathing, but today most clubs focus on fundraising , taking a sponsored dip for charity. On Jan 1, 2003 Ivy Granstrom took the plunge in Vancouver BC at the age of 91 -- her 75th New Years dip. New clubs are popping up all the time - everywhere from Ham pton, NH to Busan, Korea to Kirov, Russia -- even Gain esville, GA boasts some Polar Bears.

Universe Measured: We're 156 Billion Light-years Wide by Robert Roy Britt
http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/mystery_monday_040524.html

If you've ever wondered how big the universe is, you're not alone. Astronomers have long pondered this, too, and they've had a hard time figuring it out. Now an estimate has been made, and it’s a whopper. The universe is at least 156 billion light-years wide. In the new study, researchers examined primordial radiation imprinted on the cosmos. Among their conclusions is that it is less likely that there is some crazy cosmic "hall of mirrors" that would cause one object to be visible in two locations. And they've ruled out the idea that we could peer deep into space and time and see our own planet in its youth. This has been added to Astronomy Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

Rite of Passage 02/10/2004 02:57 AM
This is another entry in the Passages series, following Passages in the void and The Passage Home. For the first time, this is a glimpse of that universe at human scale. It's set about a thousand years after the re-colonization of the Earth in The Passage Home. Although the Passages universe puts human fate in the hands of godlike machines, Bringer is no Prime Intellect. As you will see, Bringer neatly solves the problem posed in that story -- though one might find its solution, well, refreshing.

piximcompare.jpg imageMichael Kanellos (who it looks like finally went on full-time with CNet) has a great article about the future of digital camera chipsets and the companies vying to become the 'Intel of the photography chipset world.' While the business details aren't all that interesting, some of the new technology sounds great. Case in point, this anti-glare technology from Pixim which takes a normal sun-filled photograph [left] and processes out the saturation [right], making it possible to take decent-looking pictures even when facing sunlight.

Who will become the Intel of photography? [CNet]

norpro_egg_timer.jpgThe Norpro Egg Rite Egg Timer is nothing new, but a recent piece on Apartment Therapy brought it to light and I couldn't resist it's simple style and singular function. Drop the Egg Rite into your pot of eggs and watch as the color of the egg changes—right before your very eyes, no less—to obscure the words "soft", "medium", and eventually "hard", indicating how done your eggs are. If you're the type who boils eggs on a daily basis, the $7.00 timer's surely for you.
