12/20/2003 07:22 PMXML in PHP5: An
in-depth look into advanced XML features (via Keith) does exactly what it says on the tin. Here
are the bits that caught my eye:
Unforuntately, my biggest criticism of PHP remains: all of the above is
supported using functions built in to the default namespace! The lack
of a smart namespace system (like Python's modules) really gets in the
way when you start trying to write reusable code or large
applications.

Ever since I signed up for some
Flickr photo RSS feeds with keywords like "Graffiti" and "Tokyo,"
I've gotten a steady stream of pix taken by folks around the world.
Some days, there's a serious jackpot, as today, with all these great
pix of graffiti in Manhattan by someone called "Ninjin" and this
sweet Tokyo skyline photo. Producing these little highlight posts is
slightly labour-intensive, so I dunno how often I'll do them, but
today it was worth it. (Disclosure: I'm an advisor to Ludicorp, the
company that makes Flickr).

Python2.4 highlights
Python2.4 highlights
09/20/2004 11:18 PMA.M. Kuchling's "What's New in Python X" documents are
always a treat, and his gu
ide to the forthcoming Python 2.4 is no exception. Among other
things, 2.4 elevates sets to built in type
status, dramatically improves the usability of Python's
list sort method (for easier application of DSU, aka the Schwartzian
transform), makes reverse iteration easier and
introduces an alternative string
substitution method.
All that's before you get on to the really exciting stuff:
generator expressions,
the new decimal type (because
floating point numbers are such a nuisance) and the
controversial function decorators.
I have to admit I didn't understand the significance of
half of this stuff until I read about them in "What's New", which
explains the use-cases for the new features with great clarity.
Python seems to advance at just the right rate; new
features are introduced fast enough to keep me interested (and keep
the language feeling alive) but not so fast as to leave me feeling
left behind.

Automatic sports highlights
07/04/2004 03:47 PMResearchers have devised software that churns through sports video and
automatically grabs the highlights. A New Scientist article describes
several of these projects--from snooker analysis at Trinity College to
soccer game scanning at the University of Florence. Computer vision
problems are notoriously difficult, but, according to the article, "as
sports follow fixed rules, and take place in predictable locations,
computers ought to be able to pick out the key pieces of play and
string them together."

Last year in Lab Notes, I wrote about a similar project at UC
Berkeley. Computer scientists there are using soccer and ballet video
footage to demonstrate machine vision software that recognizes humans
and their activities.

Motorola Webcast Highlights
Motorola Webcast Highlights
07/27/2004 06:03 PMWe sent the intern out for ice and he came back with a round-up
of last night's Motorola webcast, including more details about the new
Motorola handsets and their new seamless mobility platform. And no
ice, I might add.
Last night at 7:00 PM CST, Motorola held
the "MOTOMEDIA Webcast,"
where in addition to new products, they announced the highlight of
the event
- the company's partnership with Apple to bring iTunes compatibility
to a new
line of phones.
Though the highlight of the event was certainly this new
partnership, many people
(including myself) cared instead about the new hardware. I was
captivated by
the new phones Motorola had to offer, including the phone that
"swings
both ways," the MPx. Also featured on the webcast was an up
close and personal
view of the "Razor," Motorola's 0.54 inch StarTAC
successor.
More after the jump.
