“infamous41md has reported some vulnerabilities in the Linux kernel, which potentially can be exploited by malicious, local users to cause a DoS (Denial of Service) or gain escalated privileges. Various functions in the IEEE 1394 driver contain integer overflows within the memory allocation scheme. This can potentially be exploited via specially crafted requests, which may cause a large amount of data to be copied into an insufficiently sized buffer.”

06/28/2004 11:14 PM
Although wireless LAN networks provide freedom of movement, they also require you to address security issues that are not as prevalent on a private cabling system for a wired LAN technology such as Ethernet. The main security issues are the authentication of wireless clients and the encryption and data integrity of wireless LAN frames. This article discusses the security issues of IEEE 802.11 wireless networks and shows how the Microsoft Windows XP operating system can be used to make 802.11 wireless networks as secure as the current set of 802.11-related technologies allow.

Wireless Data Currently About Ubiquity,

Wireless Data Currently About Ubiquity,
Not Speed
09/22/2004 02:58 PM
We've already joked about how all wireless data services, no matter how fast, start their pricing at $80/month, in the hopes that business users with expense accounts will sign up while the network provider works out all their network and capacity problems. The prices eventually drop as the provider feels better about the network and (much more importantly) competitors have launched their own, faster, networks also at the $80 price point. Still, in an interview about wireless data offerings, the co-CEO of wireless data company Seven, provides an interesting rationale for the $80 pricing. He basically admits that it's too expensive for the power user, but just fine for the casual user. Seems a bit counter-intuitive, doesn't it? The power user, of course, is also a bandwidth hog -- and the carriers don't want bandwidth hogs clogging up these networks, so no matter what the price, the speeds of most wireless data service offerings aren't enough. However, for the more casual user, bandwidth isn't nearly as big an issue. For the casual user signing up for wireless data plans, the issue is ubiquitous connectivity -- and that's the target audience for these users. So, the question being asked is the wrong one. The interviewer is basically asking how they can justify charging $80/month for "what amounts to a very slow DSL connection." The answer (though, not this directly) is basically that users are buying the ubiquity and the mobility -- not the speed.

Dell_X50_FCC_Back.jpg imageThe Dell Axim X50 series of Pocket PCs has received FCC approval, with a single image of the back of one of the devices coming to light. The FCC's confidentiality request extends to September 24th, so I would expect Dell to make an announcement before then, at least.

Dell Axim X30 Review

Dell Axim X30 Review 05/19/2004 03:10 PM
Since this is the 1st 624mhz Pocket PC, there is nothing to compare benchmark scores with at this time, But compared to the older machines, it is "Smoking"! What is the perfect PocketPC? That is a question that will never be answered, there are too many opposing views and usage patterns for that to ever be accomplished. Today, Dell released the closest to my perfect PocketPC to date. It sports the fastest processor available at this time, SDIO SD Slot, a small and light form factor, Bluetooth and WiFi, and Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition. Other than a few features that some find a must, it has everything I want in a PocketPC. The only real complaint offhand is the look. I mentioned in my X3i review last year that I really wish that Dell would have duplicated the modern, unique look of the X5 when they design the X3. Just in case you have not figured it out yet, the Dell Axim X30 is the same as the X3i with some major enhancements.

ASUS_A730.jpg imageBrighthand is reporting that the Axim X50 - the first VGA Pocket PC from Dell, at least in its top-end model - is being pushed back to November, at least if the request for an extension with the FCC is any indictor (it is). Now that the FCC will keep information silent on their web site until a product launch, a push back to November probably means what we think it means. Oh, and it's November 8th, for what it's worth, so put down the wallets for a while.

There are other VGA Pocket PCs hitting the streets, though. In fact, PDA Buyer's Guide just reviewed the Asus A730 which should hit the streets any day now.
