Garbage man severs my phone, TV cable,
internet, drives away
03/19/2005 03:03 AM
Mark Frauenfelder: Dscn0194 I don't understand why garbage men always seem angry? What's to be angry about? They are well paid, have no deadlines or stress, never have to get their butt out of their seat, get excellent health benefits, paid vacation, and so on.

Garbage men never have to worry about getting fired, no matter how badly they screw up. That's probably why the Los Angeles garbage man who snapped my phone, TV cable, and internet lines, damaging my roof in the process, drove away without so much as a note with a number we could call. A neighbor saw the whole thing happen this morning. The driver shrugged and kept on going. "Not my problem," he probably thought to himself, assuming he had enough empathy to realize he had inconvenienced another person.

Now there are cables stretched across the road. I called the city, and they told me they'll send me a paper form in the mail to fill out. That's the city's way of dealing with the problem quickly.

The cable guy is here now, but he said he couldn't fix it until the pole on the roof was fixed. I climbed up on the roof and unbent the pole enough for him to pull the cable through.

The phone company won't come until Saturday. Meanwhile, the garbage man is probably downloading internet porn, yelling at his ex-wife's child support lawyer on the phone, and watching Die Hard VIII on cable, because nobody snapped his wires. I don't like you, garbage man.

yahoo goes after google (finally)

yahoo goes after google (finally) 01/06/2004 09:14 AM

Well, well. Finally, a year after purchasi ng Inktomi, and six months after buying Overture it seems that Yahoo has finally digested both acquisitions and is ready to move on from using Google for its searches and begin growing on its own in the area. The Wall Street Journal reports today (subscription required) that Yahoo is now widely expected to dump Google "within a few months". Quote:

Some marketing firms, which help advertisers manage their online campaigns for search-related ads, say they have been told Yahoo will switch from Google to its own technology as early as the first quarter.
Now, I suppose we all expected that to happen at some point (I for one am surprised it didn't happen sooner) but there's more meat to it, including mentions of Yahoo preparing to leverage its various web properties in making search a more personalized affair. Quote:
Yahoo isn't discussing many of its search plans in detail. But some steps toward independence can already be seen on the shopping section of Yahoo's site, which is now using Inktomi's technology. Type in "digital camera," for example, and the site shows pictures of specific cameras along with their prices, flanked by "shopping tools" that allow users to quickly call up price comparisons, fuller specifications and user reviews. By contrast, the same search on Yahoo's front page, which still uses Google's technology, returns a familiar text-based list of links, starting with those sponsored by retailers and followed by other camera-related sites ranked by popularity.

In the future, Yahoo officials say, searches could become much more personalized. They could be tailored to return results that reflect users' past Web-surfing behavior, for example, or preferences or interests they list in a profile.

With Google now expected to go public sometime before mid-year, things are surely going to get interesting in the search space. AOL might have to do something too to keep up with the other portals (ie., MSN and Yahoo), especially as dial-up erodes as a market advantage over time. AOL-Google anyone?

It was brought to my attention today that Yahoo is copyrighting the RSS feeds for those that are setting up Yahoo 360 accounts. Some are already refusing to use the service because in a sense Yahoo now owns your content.

This may be a oversight on Yahoo's part and I hope it is, I will probaly use their service anyway but probably not the blog portion and give them some time to answer these issues. [Yahoo 360 Copyrights Personal RSS Feeds]

Running a high-performance dynamic website is a daunting task. The short development cycles needed to stay ahead of the competition demand a web-centric scripting language that is easy to maintain and update. We'll explore a case study of one company (Yahoo!) that is making the transition to PHP from a proprietary server-side page language written in C/C++. -- Michael J. Radwin

Yahoo embraces porn ads again, sort of

Yahoo embraces porn ads again, sort of 11/18/2003 05:31 PM
Yahoo yanked X-rated products and banner ads from its American portal under pressure from conservative groups in 2001 -- but apparently, they're now back in the biz:
With the acquisition of Overture Services last month, Yahoo is now selling ads to a range of hard-core Web sites. Those ads appear on two search engines Yahoo acquired as part of the Overture deal -- AltaVista and AlltheWeb.com. Yahoo's latest embrace of the adult industry has attracted little attention until now. The Sunnyvale company has kept the adult ads off its popular U.S. portal, which has a mainstream image. Instead, the ads appear only on what are relatively small Web sites that few Internet users identify with Yahoo. The ads are also exported to Web sites outside the Yahoo family such as InfoSpace, which owns its own branded search engine, plus Dogpile and Metacrawler.

Is Yahoo Back In The Porn Business?

Is Yahoo Back In The Porn Business? 11/19/2003 08:10 AM
A few years ago, a bored reporter was surfing around Yahoo and noticed that within their market place area you could buy pornographic DVDs (though, in a well marked section that was clearly not for kids) and that for certain search terms, Yahoo was returning advertisements for porn websites. Now, we won't ask how this reporter "just happened" to stumble across this information, but his article sent the groups that get concerned about such things into a tizzy and they threatened Yahoo with all sorts of bad publicity. Yahoo backed down and removed the DVDs and the banner ads. Now, however, with their purchase of Overture, it turns out they're back in the porn ad selling business, and are hoping that the same groups that spent so much time and effort protesting a few years ago won't notice. Now, personally, I have no problems with Yahoo selling whatever they want, so long as it isn't illegal, but it will be interesting to see (a) if anyone cares this time around and (b) if Yahoo backs down again.
