The first sign of the googlopalypse?

The first sign of the googlopalypse? 03/13/2003 10:16 AM

It's the first sign of the apocalypse - Google is throwing up errors all over the shop. I've checked with a few other people to see if it's happening with them too. My favourite response was from Matt Haughey who essentially said that he couldn't really chat at the moment since he was currently onstage at SXSW doing a panel on online journalism with JD Lasica, Dan Gillmor and the guy from crabwalk.com. But yes, he'd just noticed it too...

Of course everyone's first assumption is going to be that Ev broke it.

If you participate in non-techno-geek mailing lists, and you also make a habit of "signing" your mail in compliance with the open standards articulated by RFC2015/3156, you've undoubtedly run into questions about what you're doing and possibly even criticism for doing it. At least that's been my experience over the past couple of years on mailing lists as low-tech as one dedicated to raising donkeys and mules and as high-tech as tech journalism. Well, on second thought, maybe those are both low-tech. But in any case, I've been asked to stop signing messages on both lists. The question is what to do: continue swimming upstream or give in and go with the flow?

PHP 5: A Sign that PHP Could Soon be
Owned by Sun

PHP 5: A Sign that PHP Could Soon be
Owned by Sun
08/06/2004 07:56 AM
Thanks to fellow Neowinian Krome for bringing this to our attention via BPN.

PHP 5’s official release occurred on July 13th with a complete re-haul of object-oriented programming features and improved MySQL functions. These are sure to be great additions to the package for PHP developers. However, many of the changes to PHP are hinting to something that may not necessarily be something PHP developers will like down the road.

At first glance, the obvious changes to PHP are a result of the success of the Java platform and the weaknesses of PHP revealed when making a comparison. With the release of PHP 5, it's apparent that the developers of PHP and the Zend Engine (which are essentially one and the same) felt compelled to make PHP much more like Java with respect to object-oriented programming. With its new interoperability with Java, as it states on Zend’s web site, “full integration with Java will be closer than ever before.” Hmmm, full integration with Java, huh?

On November 4th, 2003, Zend, the Israeli company backing the development of PHP announced a strategic partnership with Sun. This deal also included advisors from Borland, Macromedia, MySQL and others. The purported purpose of this deal was to make PHP part of Sun’s web server and bring it to the corporate world of development that previously had been dominated by ASP and ColdFusion. Now with the release of PHP 5, it’s far more apparent which path PHP is taking.

I was browsing a Linux site when I saw an ad for this event:

What is Penguicon?

To those of you familiar with the Linux and Open Source community, think of a weekend long Linux Users Group meeting with hundreds of other geeks which also just happens to have nationally acclaimed guests, its own wireless network, free caffeine and snacks always available, lots of folks talking about Science Fiction and Fantasy, situated next to a place to buy really cool t-shirts and buttons and such, and with some extra events like amateur singing, anime, a costume contest, and a fantasy art show.

To those of you familiar with Science Fiction conventions, imagine all the convention features you know and love, with the addition of wireless internet access, computer gaming (including the fabulous Celebrity Frag Fest), non-stop Internet access, people who know about online publishing / books on demand / digital art, a programming track involving computing topics and another one focusing on the crossover between Science Fiction and computing.

A combination Sci-Fi and Open-Source convention? This seems likely to generate a geek black hole so powerful that nothing will be able to escape it.

Why FOAFnet does not need single sign-on

Why FOAFnet does not need single sign-on 08/03/2004 07:41 PM

Julian Bond has written up some ideas on "Extending FOAFnet with single sign on". I'll spare yah the details.

It's not that I don't dig single sign-on, or the various solutions like Sxip or SourceID.

It's just that to take baby steps FOAFnet doesn't need to go all the way into single sign-on. In fact Julian's Ecademy public implementation of FOAF is fine and we've been using it to test the Tribe.net FOAFnet importer.

But the whole idea of FOAFnet was to start off simple and if we require single sign-on - we'll be blogging in 2006 taking "coulda woulda shoulda". The publicly exposed FOAF - that Julian has created on Ecademy right now - is all we need to achieve FOAFnet import/export.

Now sure sure (my bad) the coolio advanced feature I REALLY want - to simplify the whole import process WILL require authentication and single sign-on - can wait till later. It was my bad that I brought that up now. So I apologize for that.

But what we'd like to see - RIGHT NOW - is to come up with an v1 implementation - THEN start and focus on the various NEXT STEPS and issues that should be in our roadmap - moving forward. Like.....

1. Additional rdf vocabulary - triples, coolio stuff, meta metas and all that.

2. New kinds of relationships (see Peter Caputa's request) - certainly at least standardardizing a way to extend relationships

3. Merging FOAf files - so folks like me can update what's already there

4. Hot linking, mirroring, auto-updating, checking back to see if additional friends have opted in, etc.

5. Control over attributes - so folks can decide what's public, what's shown to friends only, etc.

6. Trust metrics, reputation standards, etc.

In other words - we have a long way to go.

But as I said to Peter today "we have to take a phased in approach to all this."

So let's just get good old fashioned simple import/export working and get these other features and functionality onto our 'roadmap'.

There's so much to do - if we did it all right now - we wouldn't have anything left to do.

How to sign up for ABC RSS without

How to sign up for ABC RSS without
selling your soul
06/28/2004 06:39 AM
ABC News has a good selection of RSS feeds. Unfortunately, in order to reach the page where they're listed, you have to clic k through this disgusting, clueless, multi-page "agreement" (excerpted below):
4. CONFIDENTIALITY. During the term of this Agreement, you may have access to some of ABC News's nonpublic technical or product information ("Proprietary Information"). Such Proprietary Information shall belong solely to ABC News. You shall not, except as expressly authorized by this Agreement, use or disclose Proprietary Information without the prior written consent of ABC News unless such Proprietary Information becomes part of the public domain through no fault of yours. You agree (i) not to disclose any Proprietary Information to any third parties, (ii) not to use any Proprietary Information for any purposes except carrying out your rights and responsibilities under this Agreement, and (iii) to keep the Proprietary Information confidential using the same degree of care you use to protect your own confidential information, as long as you use at least reasonable care. You acknowledge and agree that due to the unique nature of ABC News's Proprietary Information, there can be no adequate remedy at law for any breach of its obligations hereunder, that any such breach may allow you or third parties to unfairly compete with ABC News resulting in irreparable harm to ABC News, and therefore, that upon any such breach or threat thereof, ABC News shall be entitled to injunctions and other appropriate equitable relief in addition to whatever remedies it may have at law.

5. PUBLICITY. ABC News may use your name in releases, customer lists, marketing and other materials. Unless otherwise expressly permitted by ABC News, you may not create, publish, or distribute any items that reference ABC News without first submitting those items to ABC News and receiving ABC News's written consent.

Get that? You have to sign onto a confidentiality agreement in order to read the RSS feeds at ABC! And sign away your publicity rights. And agree not to forward on any ABC stories without permission.

Luckily, I didn't agree to any of that. I deleted everything in the text field containing the agreement, substituted some rude text of my own and found myself a nice list of all of ABC's XML feeds. If you'd like to directly subscribe to ABC's RSS without selling your soul by clicking through their one-sided adhesion contract, here are the direct URLs:
