Receptionist

Receptionist 04/16/2004 03:53 PM

Great article by Mike Langberg on an idea he has called Receptionist.....

Trying to reach me? Meet my Receptionist

Mercury News

I have four telephone numbers, three e-mail addresses, two fax numbers and user names on three instant messengers.

Many of the people I know personally or professionally have equally complicated electronic fingerprints.

I lose more and more productive time trying to figure out how to reach them, as well as managing my own little communications network so people can reach me.

This is a problem caused by technology, and I believe technology can provide a solution: a future service I've dreamed up and named Receptionist.

I got the idea for Receptionist after writing recently about improvements in electronic mail, instant messaging, video conferencing, voice-over-the-Internet phone calls and mobile phones. Receptionist would bring together all forms of electronic identity in a single gateway, making it easier to reach other people and at the same time increasing our privacy.

I'm not the first to think of this. A long list of companies in a field called ``unified messaging'' offers services today that cover one or two pieces of what I want. Yet as far as I know, none is yet offering a product as comprehensive as Receptionist.

The center of Receptionist would be a customizable Web page where others would go to reach you. My page could be www.langberg.com/contactme. The address would never change, even as I shift phone numbers or e-mail addresses, and I'd never have to give out any contact information other than my page.

The public version of your page would have only basic information that you're willing to share with the world at large, perhaps just your name and e-mail address. A password-protected private page, where you would control how much information is given to each account-holder, would go much deeper.

Receptionist would link to a new generation of mobile phones, just now becoming available, that know their geographic location, allowing the Receptionist page to display either vague or detailed information on your whereabouts. Receptionist would also know when you're signed on to an instant messenger program, so visitors could be told whether you're sitting at your desk.

Here's how my Receptionist page might look:

``Welcome to the contact page for Mike Langberg, Personal Technology Columnist of the San Jose Mercury News.''

The next line would vary.

On weekdays, you might see: ``Mike is working, and is available now for your phone call or message.''

Or you might see, ``Mike is working, but talking on the phone at the moment'' -- because Receptionist would know when either my wired phone or cell phone is in use.

Or ``Mike is working today, but is out of the office at the moment.'' Receptionist would post this message automatically whenever the location data on my cell phone showed I was more than a few hundred yards from the longitude and latitude of my desk.

Below this line would be a row of buttons with options for contacting me:

``Leave a voice message,'' ``Call me on the phone,'' ``Send me an e-mail,'' ``Send me an instant message,'' ``Start a video conference.''

The voice message and e-mail options would always be available, but the others would be grayed out when I'm busy or otherwise unavailable.

Beneath the contact buttons would be a log-on box, where family, friends and co-workers could enter their name and a password. This would take them to a private page where they could see my exact location, as reported by my cell phone. Family and close friends, but maybe not my boss, could ring through to my home phone anytime day or night. Co-workers would get permission to view my electronic calendar, although they wouldn't see private appointments such as weekend parties.

There would also be a voice-only version of Receptionist for people who want to reach me on the phone, without using a computer.

I'd gladly pay $10 to $20 a month for such a service, and I believe millions of others would do the same.

Receptionist would greatly increase my privacy, because I could manage how people interact with me.

More important, I could quickly and easily manage how people interact with me.

Receptionist in its fullest form isn't ready yet for the real world. We'd need much wider adoption of self-locating cell phones, more broadband Internet access in homes and more integration between telephones and the Internet. But all these things will happen within the next few years.

Contact Mike Langberg at mike@langberg.com or (408) 920-5084.

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot?

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot? 12/18/2003 12:58 PM
It took years for researchers to figure out how to make a robot be able to stand and walk on two legs. In fact, it's so complicated, that some researchers are giving up on that idea and using Segway balancing technology on their robots instead of legs. However, the folks at Sony seem to have taken the concept of the upright walking robot one step further: they've figured out how to make a robot run. That's right, it actually leaves the ground at points while jogging along. It apparently needs a bit of a walking start to get up to speed, and even at running speed, it's more of a slow jog - where it's feet barely leave the ground. Still, it's a start, and with some more work, they believe they can really make the robot run.

All 17 different joints are powered by a single motor, and there is even software to pre-script the movements on your computer and play them back again and again. Probably a little out of most casual robotics fans' price range, but for those that really like contributing to our species' ultimate destruction, you know, on the side, the Wow Robot is a lot of cybernetic doom for not a lot of cash. Robot Sex 05/06/2004 05:17 PM
Simson Garfinkel has written a new Technology Review article on the subject of Robot Sex - not sex as in robot procreation but as in robot gender. Is your robot a male or female? It turns out Honda thinks Asimo is a male and consistently refers to it as "he". The Roomba, on the other hand, is female according to the author. The article also mentions the Neiman Marcus his & her robots which included a male and female robot. There's a related Slashdot discussion.

In a new Dallas Morning News article, columnist Tom Siegfried compares the reconfigurable robots of the CONRO project with the reconfiguration of human responses caused by hormones. The snake-like CONRO robots can change their shape as needed to perform different tasks. The robots are composed of interlocking modules built on R/C servos and controlled by a 68HC12 board. Each module has yaw and pitch servos as well as one active connector and several passive connectors. The robot can reassemble its modules as needed to change shapes. CONRO is yet another project of the USC Polymorphic Robotics Lab, the same folks mentioned in our earlier story about Zero-G robotics.

ORIGAMI_4New Scientist reports on the graduate student at Carnegie Mellon University we've linked to previously who built a robot that can make simple origami constructions. The work is aimed at developing robotic systems that can manipulate various materials encountered in daily life. From researcher Devin Balkcom's site:
"Why origami?  Origami is a fresh challenge for the field of robotic manipulation.  Paper is flexible; robots are best at manipulating rigid things.  Even if we model origami as an articulated rigid body (by building our origami out of really stiff cardboard with hinges along creases), it still has a complicated mechanical structure."  Link

Robot librarian 07/21/2004 11:20 AM
Researchers at Universitat Jaume I in Spain are designing a robot librarian of sorts. The three-wheeled bot listens for verbal book requests, heads to the approximate location of the title on a shelf, and uses digital cameras to read the spines. The toughest challenge is engineering a grasper with "fingernails" to pull out the book, Professor Angel del Pobil told the BBC:
"It is mimicking the way we manipulate our hands. We have constant feedback from tactile sensors, so it is moving very slowly. In the first experiments, the books really got damaged because it was pressing too hard. Now it touches gently."

I, Robot Boycott

I, Robot Boycott 07/16/2004 01:34 AM
By the 1940s Isaac Asimov grew tired of reading endless pulp stories about masses of evil, marauding robots attempting to destroy their creators. His answer was a series of stories in which Susan Calvin, a robopsychologist, solves mysteries caused by conflicts in the Laws of Robotics, a set of ethical rules governing robot behaviour. Asimov's first collection of robot stories was titled I, Robot. Hollywood is trying to pull a fast one by licensing the title of Asimov's book for a completely unrelated movie, originally called Hardwired, about masses of evil, marauding robots attempting to destroy their creators. A hasty rewrite of the script added a few references to the Laws of Robotics and renamed some characters to match Asimov's story. There's a Susan Calvin in the film but she's just along to watch Will Smith shoot things. A petition failed to persuade 20th Century Fox to change the name of the film and now growing numbers of outraged Science Fiction fans request that people boycott the opening week of I, Robot. I plan on joining them, in an effort to put a dent the highly valued opening week revenue. If the marketing tactic makes money this time, Fox will likely use the recently licensed titles to Asimov's Foundation novels to market more unrelated films.

Experimenting AI Lab Robot

Experimenting AI Lab Robot 01/16/2004 11:01 AM
Reuters says that British researchers have created a Robot Scientist that Conducts and Interprets Lab Tests The article says that the robot can formulate theories and do research and works as well as a grad student. (er, um, Did the robot verify that claim with a control subject / grad student?) They did say that there were no differences found between the lab results from the robot and from those gathered by grad students. But at least they do say the tasks they have given it were simple ones and that it's unlikely to put anyone out of a job. So basically, this robot harbinger of the future can take the grunt work out of doing lab experiments, allowing robots to yet again free the world from drudgery (that professors usually dump on grad students). One researcher says, " If you opened it up I think humans would have the advantage. We tend to be more flexible " If it really can figure out things for itself, the scientists may have invented themselves out of a job!

Robot Dog, One of, Field Use

Robot Dog, One of, Field Use 01/07/2004 01:56 PM
The US Army TACOM group is spending $2.25 million on research projects aimed at building robot dogs that can carry a soldier's field equipment and keep up with the soldier over any terrain. Right now, each man has to carry up to 100 pounds of ammunition, food, and equipment. The long term challenge is making a four legged robot that can move as fast and quietly as a man over any terrain. The immediate challenge is making a four legged robot big enough for the job that doesn't fall over and doesn't need an internal combustion engine for power. For more, see Noah Shachtman's interesting article on the program in Wired.

Female Mine Exploration Robot

Female Mine Exploration Robot 12/19/2004 03:41 PM
Roland Piquepaille writes, "The grandmother of an engineering student at the University of Arizona has an old mine on her property. What could be inside? Would it be safe to explore it? She -- the student, not the grandmother -- decided it was better to send a robot inside and she teamed with another robotic enthusiast to build a radio-controlled rover to explore the mysteries of the old mine. The 18-inch-long and 7-inch-high robot can communicate with them via a 900 MHz radio modem and send them videos from inside the mine. Theoretically, the robot has a seven-mile range line-of-sight, but the team is not so sure. So the robot is also tied with a rope to pull it out of the mine if necessary, especially if it falls into a big hole. And did I mention this robot is a 'she'? They decided the machine was female "because the rover is independent, sometimes unpredictable and able to do the seemingly impossible" and they called her 'Green Meanie.'" You'll find more technical details and photos in Roland Piquepaille's blog. Jessica Dooley and Keith Brock, who built the robot, are both members of the UA Aerial Robotics Club.
