Companies Ignore Email Complaints, Reply
Quickly To Sales Requests
05/06/2004 11:44 AMI'm sure this won't come as much of a surprise to most people, but a
new study has shown that
50% of complaint emails get ignored. However, nearly 100%
of sales emails get a response. Surprising? Not at all. Still, it's
not particularly intelligent. Your customers are the ones who are
already paying you, and thus, are much more likely to pay you
again (or keep paying you, if it's a service) than any new potential
sale - though, not if you don't respond to their complaints. Plus,
pissing off an existing customer is almost guaranteed to get negative
word of mouth going. While new sales prospects are always important,
treating existing customers well should be seen as much more
important. Unfortunately, too many companies have a short-term view
of not caring once they've received their money. They view sales as a
revenue generator and customer support as a cost center - when
customer support can often be much more important in generating
revenue.

Less TeleMarketing, More Annoyances
10/29/2003 12:12 AM Over the past few days, I've gotten more telemarketing calls than I
have in a long time. Except none of them are technically telemarketing
calls. And some of them start off by telling you that they're not
soliciting sales. Instead, they're "taking a survey" that turns out to
be an ad in question form, or they are "introducing themselves" by
telling me about the services they can perform for my company. Has
anyone else noticed the Do Not Call list causing telemarketers to
reposition themselves so that they can continue to achieve the mission
stitched into their shoulder badges:...

Vamming: The Worst Of Telemarketing And
Spam
04/19/2004 05:40 AMOver at Network World, someone is wondering just how long it's going
to take people to start "vamming." This appears to to be something of
a made up word to describe
VoIP spamming. As the article points out, it won't be all
that difficult eventually for someone to figure out a way to spoof
caller ID numbers on a VoIP system, which will let rogue telemarketers
start calling you like spammers - without any real way to track them
down. And you thought instant messaging spam was going to be the next
big spam problem...

DMA requests no SPAM or telemarketing on
national Day of Mourning
06/10/2004 01:06 PMThe Direct Marketing Association (The DMA) today called on its members
to refrain from making marketing calls and sending commercial e-mails
to consumers on June 11, 2004, which has been designated as a National
Day of Mourning in memory of President Ronald Reagan.
“We are calling on marketers to consider the mood of the country
on this day of national mourning,” said H. Robert Wientzen,
president & CEO, The DMA. “Indeed, many member companies have
already indicated to us that they plan to refrain from calling or
sending commercial e-mail on that day. Businesses should keep in mind
the thoughts of consumers and the reputation of the industry.”
“If members do conduct a campaign, they should do so with the
utmost caution and respect on this solemn day of remembrance,”
said Wientzen.

Spamming Referer Logs
01/04/2004 12:03 PMSpammers have sunk to a new low: spamming HTTP referer logs. Now
that a lot of bloggers display referrer hits, and a lot of bloggers
monitor them to see where they're getting links from, spammers have
started sending HTTP requests with their site as the referer, just to
get people to follow the links out of curiosity.
Doc Searls noted this
phenomenon with Joe Leiberman's comapaign site. The URL
"http://www.joe2004.com?starprose" appeared in his referer logs.
Since Doc has no link from Leiberman's campaign site, and the lone
querystrign arguments indicates that someone is trying to track a
clickthrough, it seems that this was inserted there just so a
webmaster would follow the link. Looking through my logs, I have this
referer too.
Also, just like Doc, I have a referer in my logs to a blog solely
about the Paris Hilton sex video. Needless to say, there is no link
on that site to Gadgetopia. And here's one to a porn site in Germany.
And, yes, I followed both these links because I was trying to figure
out why, how, and in what context they linked to my site.
I don't know if I'm more irritated that spammers are pushing their
way into every last piece of Internet life, or if I'm more irritated
that I fell for it. Before I saw the think on Doc's site and put two
and two together, I was blitely following these refer links, trying to
figure them out. Score one for the spammers, I suppose.

Do not call 429,000 complaints in nearly

06/27/2004 04:44 AMSeems telemarketers have largely ignored the do not call list. With
nearly 65 million people who have signed up for do not call 429,000
have received at least 1 call and that's just the people that reported
it. Seems the FCC could cash in if they would go out and collect the
fines but some wonder if they have the teeth.
One advantage of living in Hawaii is most telemarketers don't
bother but those that do usually call about 4am and when you get done
screaming at them asking them if they know what time it is you never
get a call back. [CNN Money]
The Latest Techie Complaints
The Latest Techie Complaints
04/15/2004 01:02 PMSo what does a techie have to complain about these days? It what must
have been a fairly cathartic column, one tech columnist just tossed
a few of his tech complaints into a single
column that doesn't even bother trying to tie them all together.
The three big complaints: (1) every time he finds a product he likes,
it gets bought by another larger company (and, he implies, the larger
company then kills what he liked about the product) (2) it's
increasingly difficult to actually find stuff you want on a search
engine and (3) plug and play often plugs, but doesn't play. The best
part, though, is his description of the inevitable phone call after
the new device doesn't work: "Is your computer turned on? Are you
connected using a USB or firewire cable? Do you have more than a
fifth-grade education?" Something about tax day seems to bring out
people's complaining nature.
