OpenGL 2.0 launched with built-in shader
language

OpenGL 2.0 launched with built-in shader
language
08/10/2004 12:03 PM
OpenGL 2.0 was formally launched today and with it the completion of the graphics API's Shading Language specification for vertex- and pixel-shader programming. OpenGL Shading Language was approved by the OpenGL Architecture Review Board (ARB) in June 2003 as an extension to OpenGL 1.4, which has since been updated to version 1.5.

The language was always destined to be integrated into the full OpenGL specification, and that's essentially what happened today. Next, graphics chip vendors have to offer OpenGL 2.0-capable drivers, allowing programmers to code using the new API in the sure and certain knowledge that their apps will run on the latest programmable pixel and vertex shaders from ATI, Nvidia, Intel and co. And, indeed, both ATI and Nvidia were quick to voice their happiness that Shading Language has been wrapped into OpenGL and is no longer an optional add-on.

Intel Stumbles on Wi-Fi Again, with
Grantsdale

Intel Stumbles on Wi-Fi Again, with
Grantsdale
06/18/2004 09:29 AM
eWeek reports that Intel's new desktop CPU system won't have Wi-Fi at launch: Intel had been talking up its "Grantsdale" chipset's ability to act as a Wi-Fi software access point for months, but now won't be able to include Wi-Fi at all in the shipping version. They expect to provide a separate PCI card late in the year to enable Wi-Fi and this function. The idea that purchasers of a desktop system will have to return to the trough and then install an internal PCI card is, of course, ludicrous for most consumers. Intel's gap leaves the door wide open for competitors like Broadcom, which already ate Intel's lunch on the laptop side, and has been a little provider of integrated modules that include gigabit Ethernet, a 56K modem, and 802.11g Wi-Fi. Will Dell and others who turned to Broadcom for laptop Wi-Fi turn to them for the desktop version, too? At least there will be a flurry of competition among the several chipmakers who can supply the market. This delay is another major stumble for Intel, which came late to the Wi-Fi party with Centrino, shipping 802.11b-only radios a year ago spring with that laptop system, after having promised 802.11a options. Then, with 802.11a, and a/g radios scheduled for 2003, was unable to provide them. At this writing, the Centrino successor Dothan still hasn't appeared on the market in a big way, with manufacturers shipping their first models based on it just this week with 802.11g only....

Grantsdale Glitch Freezes PCs 06/25/2004 02:13 PM
“Intel has discovered a glitch involving some of the I/O controllers in the company’s new “Grantsdale” chip set, which can cause a PC to fail to boot up or to freeze. An Intel Corp. official said the scope of the problem is not known and that the company has begun polling its customers for the lot numbers of the affected chips, which were sent to manufacturers before the chipset’s official launch this past Monday. Samples of the lots are being sent to Intel for further testing.”rEAD MORE…

PSP Pixel Problems

PSP Pixel Problems 03/28/2005 04:06 PM

As I mentioned here last week, the PSP debut has brought with it a relatively large group of complaints about dead pixels on the screens. They range from a single pixel to whole rows or columns of dead pixels. Anandtech has posted a response from Sony about the dead pixels. It’s a generic type response, but worth reading..

The Sony rep suggested that PSP owners who encounter the pixel issue should try the device "for a week or two" to see if it continues to bother them. "If you find the spots are interfering with gameplay/video viewing during this period, we will support the various elements of [the PSP] warranty," the rep said. Each PSP comes with a one-year limited warranty, which is on page 125 of the PSP manual. If a PSP is "determined to be defective" by SCEA, the company will see to the "repair or replacement of this product [the PSP] with a new or refurbished product at SCEA's option."

Pixel Roller

Pixel Roller 03/22/2005 04:46 PM

pixel_roller_wider.jpgMore goods from the Interaction Design WORK IN PROGRESS show manifest in the Pixel Roller, by Stuart Wood and Florian Ortkrass.

It can be viewed like a hand printer, the pixel roller can roll out any image, video or text manually, at any speed or direction, round corners and over surfaces. ... The pixels are in the form of a series of 12 ultra bright UV LEDs situated along its axis. These UV LEDs excite phosphorescent ink and leave trails of pixels that fade with time.
They're working on a paint version as well, which will let you use inks to paint any surface directly and watch them glow. The project page has a video gallery so you can see the Pixel Roller in action.
